- Chapter 1: The Little One’s Inner Thoughts
The twins had calmed down a lot from today’s incident. They even had the mood to play woven ball with Xiao Qingya.
The little one chased the ball around and kicked it to her elder sisters, clapping happily when they failed to catch it.
In contrast to the lively atmosphere in front of him, Xiao Fenghao’s mood was rather gloomy. Zhou Anran and the twins had told them everything.
[Little Ya, the accumulated points is enough for another upgrade. Now, there is another feature you can use.]
The System told Xiao Qingya excitedly.
Xiao Qingya paused. She hugged the rattan ball and asked curiously. [System, what feature?]
[A spin wheel!]
[Little Ya, I don’t expect we can even reach this stage here! You are now given one chance to spin the wheel and gain a random item or skills.]
The little one was dumbfounded at the sudden good news that she felt almost as if she was dreaming.
[System, you are not lying, are you?]
The System was speechless. Still it explained patiently.
[When did I ever lie to you? Just check it yourself.]
Xiao Qingya was like a curious cat who had discovered a new world. She hurriedly clicked on the system’s interface in her mind. Soon, she caught the sight of the spin wheel the System was talking about. It was positioned right beside the system shop.
She didn’t hesitate to click on it.
However, soon, she frowned. [System, what is this? Why can’t I see the rewards?]
All the rewards were shrouded in grey color and it was hard to tell what shape it was.
The unreliable System coughed softly and made an excuse. [Isn’t it more exciting, Host? You can receive the kind of reward you least expected!]
[What a lousy spin wheel.] Xiao Qingya grumbled.
Even so, she still wanted to try it.
However, just as she was about to press the spin button, they all heard knocking on the door.
Xiao Yuxi got up and went to the front door. Once she opened it, she was dumbstruck to find their disheveled grandfather standing outside.
"May I come in?" Zhou Wenzhi asked.
At this moment, he looked older. There seemed to be more white hairs on his head compared to before.
Xiao Yuxi felt slight pity for her grandfather. All the main family’s members were troublemakers except for the little aunt.
"Of course, Grandfather. Please, come in. I will call Mother to tell her that you have come to visit," Xiao Yuxi opened the door a little wider, turned around, and went to the kitchen.
Zhou Wenzhi closed the door behind him and walked in a little awkwardly. He was somewhat embarrassed to face his eldest daughter. His wife, son, and daughter-in-law had really made him lose face.
"Father, what brings you here?" Zhou Anran pretended not to notice her father’s slightly awkward face.
She didn’t really blame him. Zhou Wenzhi still had his own way of caring for them.
Although he rarely visited them—for the fear of his wife making a fuss and disturbing his eldest daughter’s family—he still sometimes entrusted some items like medicine or even money through Physician Li.
Most of the time, Physician Li even said that Zhou Wenzhi had paid for Xiao Fenghao’s treatment.
"How is Hao’er?" Zhou Wenzhi asked. "Has he recovered?"
Zhou Anran gestured with her hand. "Hao’er is inside his room. You can go inside, Father."
She opened the door. "His condition has recovered a lot. Thankfully, Physician Li is very skilled. Although his left hand will take a while to heal, it shouldn’t leave any side effects."
Zhou Wenzi entered the door. All the siblings were inside, and once he took one step forward, all eyes were on him.
He didn’t falter. His eyes swept over Xiao Fenghao who still had some bandage on some parts of his body, and he said kindly. "Hao’er, how is your recovery going?"
Xiao Fenghao nodded in acknowledgement. His attitude was rather lukewarm. "I have been recovering well, Grandfather."
"Good, good." Zhou Wenzhi sighed. "If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, don’t hesitate to tell Physician Li about it."
The teenager on the bed lowered his head, slowly nodding. He didn’t want to say much.
Zhou Wenzhi’s attention turned to the twins and said in a concerned tone. "You two must have been frightened a lot today."
"I have warned your grandmother not to do something reckless, but in the end, my words are just like passing winds for her." He lamented.
He added. "I will make sure that your grandmother won’t dare to do something like this again. There is no need to be afraid if you want to go to the village market to sell your scented sachets."
"It’s okay, Grandfather, it’s not your fault," Xiao Yuyan said softly.
Xiao Yuxi was more easygoing, and she echoed her sister’s sentiment. "Don’t worry, Grandfather. When someone has done something wrong, they should be responsible for it, not others. We know how to differentiate right from wrong."
Zhou Wenzhi took a deep breath, and was somewhat still grateful that he still had such filial descendants. Zhou Anran had taught all of her children well.
Unlike that eldest son of his who was always rebellious since childhood, often refusing to learn how to read and write. On top of that, Chen Huayun also always spoiled him, leading to his current crooked personality and temperament.
Zhou Shiming was somewhat clever, but his temperamental personality often clouded his judgement. He was so ruthless as to lay a hand on his own nephew.
Zhou Wenzhi hoped it wouldn’t be late for him to turn back.
After he was done checking on the kids, he went to speak privately with his daughter. Xiao Qingya clung to her mother’s lap, laying her head on it.
Her gaze was completely innocent, and Zhou Wenzhi thought that a two year old wouldn’t understand much about adult conversation, so he didn’t think much about her presence.
"Little Ya, do you like peaches?" Zhou Wenzhi asked softly, as if afraid of startling the little one.
Xiao Qingya’s ears perked up upon hearing about food. She raised her head and slowly nodded with expectant eyes toward her grandfather.
Zhou Wenzhi smiled and pulled a plump peach from his robe. "Here you go. Take it."
The little one waddled over and took it from her grandfather’s hand. After mumbling a soft thanks, she went back to her mother’s lap, admiring the bright colored peach.
"You, child." Zhou Anran muttered helplessly. Her hand caressed Xiao Qingya’s head.
"Let her eat it. If she likes peaches, I will bring more later." Zhou Wenzhi told them, and the atmosphere eased slightly. But, soon, Zhou Wenzhi became serious again.
"Ran’er, you don’t need to worry about your mother and sister-in-law." he began. "Since my words kept on falling to deaf ears, I will let them stay at the yamen for a while."
He wanted them to learn that every action always has a consequence, and that they wouldn’t be free of it. After all, no one dared to bring them to the yamen before even if they acted lawlessly.
The fellow villagers were worried it would damage the harmony between neighbours if they reported each other like that.
Now, strangers had no such qualms about sending them to yamen.
"Father..." Zhou Anran was at a loss.
Then, she saw the determination in her father’s eyes. At that moment she knew he had made a decision and wouldn’t be soft-hearted toward them again.
Zhou Wenzhi opened his mouth, yet no words came out. He closed his mouth again, and in the end, he said nothing.
"If you need any help, just tell me or Shu’er about it."
Not long after, Zhou Wenzhi left.
[System, do you think that Grandpa is going to get divorce that bad guy?]
