After everything had finally settled, the room fell into a deep, heavy quiet. Lin Wan had completely given in to her tiredness and was now fast asleep under the sheets, her breathing slow and even. Qin Mo just laid next to her, propping himself up slightly on one elbow.

There was a mix of very different emotions in his green eyes as he looked down at her face. He felt incredibly happy, but at the same time, a heavy layer of worry hung over his mind. He knew Lin Wan was pregnant. How could he not sense his own bloodline?

A low, husky laugh escaped Qin Mo’s throat at her reaction. He found her sleepy resistance incredibly endearing.

He leaned down to kiss her cheek one more time, and then slowly and quietly got off the bed so he wouldn’t disturb her rest anymore.

Walking bare-footed across the cool floor, he went into the bathroom to wash up. A few minutes later, he came back outside.

He hadn’t bothered to put on a shirt; he was just wearing a pair of loose lounge pants, leaving his pale chest and the long red scratch marks scattered across his shoulders completely bare.

Still feeling the lingering heat from the room, he stepped out of the bedroom and walked down the quiet hallway.

On getting to the kitchen, he suddenly stopped dead in his tracks. He came face to face with a small black cat sitting perfectly still on the counter. It was Weiwei.

He and the black cat just looked at each other for a long while in the semi-darkness.

The silence in the kitchen grew heavier by the second. Qin Mo kept his face entirely blank, his emerald eyes locked onto the animal, until he finally broke the silence.

"Weiwei," Qin Mo said, his voice smooth but cold. "Do you want anything from me?"

The black cat tilted its head, its golden eyes reflecting the dim light of the room. It let out a sharp, mocking sound from its throat.

[Tsk. I don’t think you’re worthy of my lady’s fondness,] Weiwei said, her voice echoing clearly in his mind with total disdain.

Qin Mo felt the bones in his legs cracking under the sudden weight. The skin on his bare shoulders went tight, and his kneecaps almost completely gave out from the sheer gravity pressing down on him.

The temptation to drop to the floor just to stop the pain was immense. But his silver tail manifested behind him, slamming against the floor tiles to anchor his weight, and he stood ramrod straight. He absolutely refused to kneel down or let his back bend to anyone, even a cosmic force.

After a few tense seconds, Weiwei suddenly removed her pressure, the heavy atmosphere vanishing instantly. A soft, almost pleased smile appeared on the cat’s face.

[If you had as much as lowered your head to me, I’d kill you right now and just wait for my lady’s punishment,] Weiwei said casually, licking one of her paws. [A weak man is not allowed near my lady. At least you have some spine.]

’Lady?’

Qin Mo thought to himself, his breath coming in short, heavy gasps as his body recovered from the strain. The word echoed in his mind.

The more he listened to Weiwei, the more the thought became completely clear to him: Lin Wan’s background was far from being ordinary. She wasn’t just a powerful female with strange items; her true origins belonged to a level of existence he couldn’t even map out.

"What?!" Qin Mo asked incredulously, his voice cracking slightly. His cold composure completely shattered at that statement. He knew his children carried a dual bloodline of dragon, snake, and leopard, but to hear that an unborn infant already surpassed their combined strength was impossible to wrap his head around.

[Yes! As it should be, given their true lineage,] Weiwei huffed. [But with the massive distance between their power and your power, that is the main problem now. You are their father. You should at least be able to protect your own cubs when they are small, as it is the basic nature of a beast family. Right now, if a real threat from the higher realms comes down, you would have to hide behind your own children.]

"Fuck!" Qin Mo couldn’t help but curse out loud, the harsh word slipping past his lips.

His pride as a beast male took a low, painful hit right to the guts with those words.

He had always been the strongest serpent in his region, the one who controlled the shadows and protected his family. To be told he was a liability to his own children cut deeper than any physical blade.

Weiwei sneered at him from the counter, entirely unbothered by his anger. [If you can’t even lift a shoe for your own cubs, what exactly can you do for my lady when the real enemies show up?]

Qin Mo forced his breathing to slow down, his fingers clenching into fists at his side. He stared at the cat, his intellect switching back on. "I presume that with all this you’ve been saying... this is not what you really wanted to tell me, is it? You didn’t come to me just to insult my strength."
