Gu Fei really didn’t like this old woman.
She was the one who had decided to sell her all those years ago.
Gu Fei didn’t say a word. Gu Erlang quickly carried her on his back into their room.
The clever Second Miss followed them inside.
Gu Zhang’s voice drifted in from the courtyard. "Mother, it’s not that Little Fei won’t come see you. She’s just badly injured. We had no choice but to go into the city today."
The old woman’s voice suddenly shot up. "You’re heartless too, always protecting that little slip of a girl! If you ask me, that girl has no respect for her elders at all. She sees me and doesn’t even know to offer a proper greeting!"
"No matter what, I’m still her grandmother!"
"If it weren’t for me, she wouldn’t have been able to go to the Marquis Mansion and enjoy a life of comfort!"
Mrs. Chen came out of the kitchen with a dustpan. "Mother, don’t you dare say another word about her enjoying a life of comfort in the Marquis Mansion."
"The wounds on Little Fei’s back are from being beaten with a paddle at the Marquis Mansion. If she were at home, would I ever lay a single finger on her?"
"What makes you think the Marquis Mansion is such a wonderful place? Little Fei is lucky she made it back alive."
Just as she spoke, Ms. Qian came over from next door. "Well now, Sister-in-law, that’s not a very nice thing to say."
Her eyes darted straight to the mule cart parked in the courtyard. "This cart... Little Fei bought it with her money, didn’t she?"
"If the Marquis Mansion was so bad, how could she have saved up the silver to buy a cart?"
"TSK TSK TSK. A mule this big, plus the cart... that must have cost dozens of taels of silver! Just how much did Little Fei rake in at the Marquis Mansion?"
Gu Zhang said coolly, "Sister-in-law, don’t spread baseless rumors. The mule cart is borrowed. We have to return it tomorrow."
Ms. Qian spat. "Yeah, right! Like I’d believe you!"
She turned to the old woman. "Mother, as soon as Little Fei got back yesterday, Second Brother’s family slaughtered a chicken. If that’s not a sign they’ve struck it rich, what is?"
"And another thing! They ate chicken as a family and didn’t even think to send a bowl over to you. I’m telling you, the moment that girl came back, Second Brother’s family stopped seeing you as an elder."
Furious, Mrs. Chen slammed the dustpan down. "Sister-in-law, stop trying to stir up trouble! I was going to set some of that chicken aside for Mother, but then the whole pot went missing, didn’t it? What was I supposed to do?!"
At the mention of this, Ms. Qian grew a little nervous, but she remained stubborn. "Stop your nonsense. How could a whole pot of chicken just disappear? If you don’t want to show filial piety to Mother, just say so."
’They slaughtered a chicken and didn’t even give me a bite! That second son of mine has truly lost all conscience!’
Back when she had decided to sell Gu Fei, Gu Zhang had been cold and distant toward her ever since he found out. Soon after, he had split the family assets, claiming he didn’t want to be a burden on everyone.
But she knew her second son blamed her.
’But what choice did I have?’ she thought. ’Compared to a granddaughter, of course a son is more important.’
Besides, the brothel had offered eight taels of silver and she’d refused. Instead, she’d asked an old woman she knew to sell Gu Fei into the Marquis Mansion for only five taels of silver. ’Shouldn’t they be grateful to me for that?’
’A whole family of ungrateful wretches!’
The more the old woman thought about it, the angrier she became. Waving her cane, she shrieked, "Get that girl out here and make her kneel! If I don’t teach her a proper lesson, she’ll be climbing all over her elders’ heads and shitting on them!"
"Mother, what are you doing?" Gu Zhang said angrily. "Can’t you see the injuries on Little Fei’s body?"
"Besides, she hasn’t done anything wrong! How can you make her kneel?"
Gu Fei heard everything clearly from inside the room, and her expression darkened.
If she weren’t keenly aware that the rules of decorum were paramount in this era, she would have stormed out and started a fight with the old woman.
’Did I do anything to you? Why come looking for trouble with me the second you arrive?!’
Second Miss clutched her sleeve, trembling with fear. ’This old woman is so scary.’
Just then, Gu Erlang walked out of the room and dropped to his knees with a THUD. "Grandma, my sister is injured. I’ll kneel in her place. If you have a lesson to teach, then teach it to me."
