Gu Fei felt a flicker of joy. She lifted the curtain and saw Er Lang standing by the cart.

He had been out with a Ya Zi looking at properties. They had already seen two, but Gu Erlang had found them too small and was unsatisfied.

Gu Erlang was speaking with Gu Zhang when he casually glanced into the cart. He was startled to see a girl sitting beside his sister.

The girl wore a peach-pink dress. Her eyes were large and luminous, her skin fair and delicate. She was incredibly beautiful.

Gu Erlang’s face immediately flushed red, and he began to stutter, "S-Sis, where are you all going?"

As he spoke, Gu Erlang couldn’t stop his eyes from stealing glances at the Second Miss.

The Second Miss noticed his gaze and, blushing, hid behind Gu Fei.

"We were just about to look for you. Now we can all go see the house together." Gu Fei stared at Gu Erlang’s face. ’Everything’s fine, so why is he blushing?’

So they all went to see the house. It wasn’t far. The Ya Zi opened the gate, revealing a large courtyard of about seventy or eighty square meters. There was even a well in one corner.

There were plenty of rooms, too. Between the main building and the side houses, there were a good ten rooms in total—more than enough for the whole family.

Gu Fei was very satisfied.

Gu Erlang promptly signed the contract with the Ya Zi and paid the silver.

Gu Zhang helped Gu Fei lie down on the kang bed, urging her not to move around, before heading out with Gu Erlang to find Gu Qing.

For lunch, Gu Fei and the Second Miss had a simple meal of two steamed buns. It wasn’t until around 3:00 PM that the men returned to the courtyard with a mule-drawn cart.

Gu Fei climbed off the kang bed and walked into the courtyard to inspect the mules.

The mules were all quite large, weighing around a thousand jin each—much better than some breeds of smaller horses. Two were dark brown, and one was nearly black, all with thick, powerful legs.

Gu Qing parked the mule cart and came over to report the expenses to his sister.

"I bought the best mules—a cross between a Hequ horse and a donkey. They’re large and very strong. Twenty taels of silver each. I passed on the cheaper ones that were only ten-odd taels."

"The three mules cost sixty taels of silver in total, the three carts were fifteen taels, and shoeing the mules cost two taels of silver. I also bought thirty taels of silver worth of sheepskin."

"That leaves ninety-three taels of silver."

Gu Fei nodded and took the remaining money.

Gu Sanlang grinned and handed Gu Fei a small bundle. "Sister, I pawned all the jewelry. It came to two hundred fifteen taels of silver. I gave one tael to Er Lang for the house, and the rest is here."

Gu Fei took the silver and put it away. ’Hmm, that leaves three hundred and seven taels of silver. That should be enough for the journey, right?’

"Didn’t you guys eat lunch?"

They all shook their heads.

Gu Fei quickly took out a few steamed buns and distributed them, then gave Gu Sanlang some silver, telling him to stay behind and watch the new house.

The rest of them took a mule cart out. They bought two sets of clothes for the Second Miss to change into, and Gu Fei also bought heavy, cotton-padded jackets for both herself and the Second Miss to wear later. After stopping by a butcher shop to buy some meat, they finally headed back to the village.

The cart stopped at the Gu Family’s door. Gu Fei had just lifted the curtain when she saw an old woman standing in their yard, scowling at her.

As Gu Erlang carried Gu Fei off the cart on his back, the old woman thumped her cane heavily on the ground. "Is this Little Fei?"

"You’ve been back for days and haven’t even thought to come visit your old grandmother!"

Gu Qing quickly offered an apologetic smile. "Grandma, Little Fei is injured. She was planning to visit you as soon as she recovered."

The old woman snorted loudly. "It wasn’t a problem for her to go into the city, was it? I live right next door. Would walking a few steps really kill her?"

"I see. She just has no respect for an old woman like me."
