Gu Qing’s hands trembled as he tucked the silver note into his robes.
’This was two hundred taels of Silver!’
A sum this large could support the family for decades. He absolutely couldn’t lose it.
Then Gu Fei turned to Gu Erlang. "Second Brother, after Third Brother pawns the items, take some of the Silver and go rent a courtyard in the city. One month will be enough. It needs to be a large place, big enough to get a mule cart inside. Once you’ve secured the courtyard, go meet Eldest Brother at the South Market. After you’ve bought the supplies, drive the mule cart into the courtyard."
Gu Fei continued, "Third Brother, after you’ve pawned the jewelry, you should also go meet Eldest Brother at the South Market. Dad and I will go to the Imperial Music Bureau. Once you all have bought the supplies, just leave someone at the rental to watch over the place."
Gu Fei then looked at Gu Zhang. "Dad, will this arrangement work?"
Gu Zhang thought for a moment. "Is it really necessary to rent a courtyard in the city?"
Gu Fei smiled. "Dad, if our family suddenly returned with several mule carts, wouldn’t it cause a huge uproar in the village?"
She came from the Marquis Mansion, and it was no secret that the Marquis Mansion’s assets had been seized. Someone would definitely wonder if she had hidden the mansion’s Silver. A jealous person might even report her to the government, and that would be a huge problem.
Gu Zhang quickly grasped her reasoning. He nodded and looked at Gu Fei with relief. "I’m not as thorough in my thinking as you are."
In less than an hour, they entered the city. Gu Qing and his younger brothers disembarked at the city gate.
Gu Fei and Gu Zhang headed straight for the Imperial Music Bureau.
The main gates of the Imperial Music Bureau were wide open.
Gu Zhang and Gu Fei got out of the carriage. Just as they reached the entrance and were peering inside, a servant guarding the gate barked, "What are you doing? Shoo, shoo! This isn’t a place for you!"
Gu Zhang, smiling placatingly, fumbled for Silver in his sleeve pocket. "Sir, we’d just like to ask you about something."
"Where did you country bumpkins come from? I told you to get lost, didn’t you hear me?" Before Gu Zhang could get any closer, the servant shot out a hand and gave him a hard shove.
Gu Zhang had been standing on the steps, and the push sent him staggering backward.
Gu Fei frantically reached out to catch him, but she was injured and not as nimble as she used to be. She missed, and Gu Zhang tumbled down the steps.
"Dad—" Gu Fei rushed down and helped Gu Zhang sit up. She saw a gash on his forehead, which was already bleeding.
"Dad, are you all right?" Gu Fei said, anxiously looking Gu Zhang over, wondering if he had broken any bones.
"I’m fine," Gu Zhang gasped, slowly getting to his feet with Gu Fei’s support.
Gu Fei pulled out a handkerchief and pressed it to Gu Zhang’s forehead. She turned and said furiously to the servant, "You! How can you be so unreasonable? If you won’t let us in, fine, but why did you have to hit him!"
The servant sneered. "Country bumpkin, so what if I hit him? Even if I beat him to death, it would be for nothing. What are you going to do, report me?"
Just then, a man who looked like a steward came out of the entrance. "What’s all this? What’s with all the racket?"
The servant’s demeanor instantly became respectful. He bowed and said, "Steward Liu, a couple of country bumpkins showed up, snooping around. They look like trouble."
Steward Liu glanced at Gu Fei and her father. "Get rid of them. What a disgrace, having such riffraff standing at the gate!" With that, he turned and went back inside.
The servant bowed respectfully. "Yes, sir."
The moment Steward Liu’s figure disappeared, the servant straightened up, rushed down the steps in a few strides, and aimed a kick at Gu Zhang’s chest. "Get lost—"
Horrified, Gu Fei quickly pulled Gu Zhang aside.
The servant’s kick missed its target, causing him to lose his balance. He staggered forward two steps and nearly fell.
A few passersby laughed.
