John was still smiling.
That was the part Adam’s father trusted the most.
John had the kind of smile that made people feel they were being respected. He spoke softly, listened patiently, and never made Adam’s father feel like a burden. He called him uncle, offered tea, and kept explaining that Adam was only away because of college work.
Adam’s father wanted to believe him.
"Son," he said, sitting across from John, "it has been many days now. When will Adam come back?"
John did not answer too quickly.
He placed his cup down, looked a little troubled, and then smiled again.
"Uncle, I understand. If I were in your place, I would also be worried."
"His phone is still not connecting."
"I know," John said. "He told me before leaving that his phone had some problem. The college side sent him out in a hurry, so he still has not managed to fix it."
Adam’s father frowned. "He could have called from someone else’s phone."
For one moment, John’s smile almost slipped.
Only almost.
"He should have," John said. "You are right. I will scold him for that when he comes."
Adam’s father looked down at his hands. They were rough hands, farmer’s hands, hands that did not belong inside the clean sitting room John had placed him in.
"He never stayed silent like this before," he said quietly.
John watched him.
The bait was good. Too good.
That was what made John restless.
"If you know where he has gone, tell me honestly," Adam’s father said. "I will not scold him. I only want to see him once."
John lowered his eyes for a second, as if he felt bad for hiding something.
"Uncle, if I knew his exact place, I would take you there myself," he said. "I am waiting for his call too."
The lie came out easily.
He had thought Adam would react by now. A normal son would panic if his father appeared near the person who had ruined him. A clever son would at least send someone to check. A weak son would break. An emotional son would rush.
Adam had done nothing.
That was the problem.
John’s patience was thinning.
Not one call. Not one shadow near the door. Nothing.
He could not simply harm the man. Not yet. That would be crude, and worse, it would mean admitting that Adam had forced him to drop lower than he wanted. John did not like using family as a first weapon. He preferred pressure, games, and the pleasure of watching people walk into a trap while believing they still had choices.
But Adam was not walking.
John had tried to read that silence from every angle.
Adam did not know his father was here. He knew and was too scared.
Maybe Adam was watching from somewhere and counting how far John would go.
The third possibility interested him the most.
If Adam was watching and still holding himself back, then the boy had more control than John had expected.
That thought annoyed him and excited him at the same time.
John had already checked the simple routes, but Adam had not appeared. That meant John needed another careful move.
Adam’s father lifted his head again.
"Should I go to the college myself?" he asked. "If I talk to the office, maybe they will tell me where he went."
John almost smiled for real.
That would be troublesome.
The college office had too many loose ends. Too many people knew Adam had been removed. If the father went there alone and asked the wrong person, the lie could crack before John got any use out of it.
"You can go," John said gently. "But college offices are slow. They will only make you sit from one room to another."
Adam’s father looked worried again.
"Then what should I do?"
John leaned back and looked at Adam’s father with a thoughtful expression.
"Uncle, my father has a rally tomorrow," he said.
Adam’s father looked up. "Rally?"
"Election work," John said. "A public program. Many people will come, and the media will be there too."
"I should not go there," Adam’s father said at once. "I am only here to meet my son."
"That is exactly why you should come," John said gently. "Adam may hear about it. If he is nearby, he may come directly. And even if he does not, you will not sit alone worrying."
Adam’s father hesitated.
John saw it and pressed softly.
"You are Adam’s father. That makes you important to me too. Please do not think of yourself as a stranger here." 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
The words worked.
Adam’s father was not a suspicious man by nature. He was worried, tired, and out of place in the city. A polite young man offering help looked like relief.
John smiled again, but inside his mind, another thought moved.
If Adam was watching, then tomorrow would tell him more.
Would Adam stay hidden even after seeing his father in a public political rally?
Would he send someone?
Would he make a mistake?
John did not know.
That was why he felt excited.
For the first time in a long while, someone had made him wait.
He did not plan to announce Adam’s father loudly. That would be too obvious. A softer frame was better. A few cameras catching the man beside him, a few local clips spreading online, and enough for Adam to notice if he was watching the city.
Public pressure without a direct threat.
That was John’s style.
If Adam rushed, John would see him.
If Adam stayed hidden, John would learn that too.
Either result was useful.
John did not need to win tomorrow. He only needed Adam to feel that the circle around his father was becoming smaller.
"Rest for today, uncle," John said. "Tomorrow, I will take you there myself."
Adam’s father slowly nodded.
John’s smile remained calm.
Inside, his patience was already sharpening into something else.
And scene shifted....
