The instant Leo looked at William’s face, he realized that an alien or mutant capable of controlling zombies was nearby.
There had always been a nagging feeling in Leo’s mind during this encounter.
From the first ambush by the crawler and the spitter to being surrounded, it felt as if the zombies were coordinating with each other.
He had been fighting zombies for the past few days, yet he had never encountered zombies coordinating their attacks on survivors so effectively.
At that moment, everything finally clicked into place inside Leo’s mind.
"William, wake up!"
Leo tried calling out to William, but it was in vain. He kept creating distance between himself and William, afraid that the alien might control either of them and force them to attack each other.
But all his worries were for nothing. William simply walked toward the horde of zombies as if he were sleepwalking.
Leo couldn’t let William willingly walk toward the zombies and be torn apart.
"William, wake up. Think about Elena and Lily. If you die, then who is going to take care of them?"
But Leo’s words fell on deaf ears.
"Fuck, dammit!"
Then Leo stepped in front of William and started hacking through the zombies while fighting off the crawlers.
But even though he was stronger now, he was being overwhelmed by their numbers. For some reason, the zombies ignored William and focused entirely on Leo.
Leo realized the alien’s goal. The creature was using William as bait to force Leo to stay and fight instead of running away.
’If you don’t fight, your friend is going to die.’
Seeing that Leo was still holding his ground and steadily reducing the zombies’ numbers despite being overwhelmed, the alien changed tactics.
One crawler suddenly leaped toward William, but Leo seemed prepared. He raised the hand holding his gun and pulled the trigger.
’Bang!’
The crawler that had just jumped toward William had a hole blasted through the middle of its head while still in midair.
"I knew you would go after him if you couldn’t take me down directly. If I already know where you’re coming from, I can shoot you even with my eyes closed."
Leo could say this with such confidence because, after unlocking Mental Power, his senses, eyesight, and reflexes had become extraordinarily sharp.
Even if ordinary people couldn’t clearly follow a crawler’s movements, Leo could see every single movement when he was fully focused.
The only drawback was that he couldn’t maintain such a state for long and would become exhausted much faster.
The alien seemed to have realized this weakness as well.
Suddenly, a spitter appeared out of nowhere and sprayed acid toward William.
Having no choice, Leo quickly closed the distance between himself and William. Realizing that he might not reach him in time to avoid the acid, he put all his strength into his legs and jumped toward William.
They avoided the acidic spray, but both of them crashed to the ground. At that moment, the remaining crawler pounced on Leo and tried to bite him.
But Leo raised his arm to block the crawler’s jaws.
The crawler bit down on his arm, but its teeth—which could tear through flesh as easily as paper—couldn’t pierce Leo’s armor.
Leo flashed an evil grin at the crawler and raised his gun toward its head.
’Bang!’
At such close range, the bullet pierced the crawler’s skull instantly.
Then Leo stood up and, before the spitter could launch another acidic attack, quickly closed the distance and chopped off its head in a single clean motion.
Surprisingly, the spitter’s flesh parted as easily as jelly, offering almost no resistance.
"I see. Although your acid is dangerous to others, your bones and flesh are weakened by the corrosive effects of the acid inside your own body."
Leo then saw William stand up and start heading toward the zombie horde once again.
Looking at the approaching zombies, Leo was truly furious now.
"Fuck you. I needed teammates to watch my back, not babysit them."
Leo clearly realized that if he hadn’t been wearing armor earlier, he would have been killed for sure.
Still cursing William, Leo quickly closed the distance and delivered a powerful slap across his face.
William was immediately sent flying.
Suddenly, William screamed,
"Ouch... What the fuck? Who hit me?"
Then William quickly got to his feet and, after looking around at his surroundings, turned toward Leo with a bewildered expression.
"What’s going on here?"
