Sophia Shaw stood quietly in the yard, looking at the dazzling white building before her.
Yvonne Sherman had originally mortgaged this house, and it had nearly been auctioned off by the court.
It was Chad Jennings who had hounded her mother every day to earn money desperately, just to scrape together enough to buy it back.
Chad Jennings had claimed that his deceased father had owed a loan shark a gambling debt, and that they were coming after him for the money, even threatening to cut off his hand.
He even feigned concern and drew up a divorce agreement, saying he didn’t want to drag her mother down with him.
Her foolish mother had been hopelessly in love with Chad Jennings, captivated by his superficial tenderness, and had worked herself to death drumming up business.
She drank until she vomited blood and even risked her life doing business in war zones abroad.
While she was out enduring the elements, Chad Jennings and Yvonne Sherman were in this very house, sleeping together.
And it was only after her mother’s death that Joanna Sherman had flaunted all of this!
That was when she finally found out!
Remembering Chad Jennings and Yvonne Sherman’s shameless past, an uncontrollable hatred surged in Sophia Shaw’s chest.
She silently clenched her fists.
Having just been tricked by Sophia Shaw, Joanna Sherman now hated the sight of her more than a demon.
She bellowed, "What’s going on! Are you blind? Can’t you see there’s trash in the house? Get it out of here, now!"
Hearing her shouts, the maids and bodyguards all came running out.
Only then did Sophia Shaw slowly come back to her senses. She raised her hand, lifting the object she was holding.
The object was wrapped in paper. Unsure of what it was, everyone froze.
Sophia Shaw looked at Joanna Sherman. "I’m ordering you. You have twenty minutes to get Seraphina Vaughn completely out of Lustra!"
"You dare order me?" Joanna Sherman’s face twisted, her eyes glaring at Sophia as if she wanted to tear her to shreds.
"A grasshopper I’ve crushed under my heel dares to hop around in front of me?"
"You must have a death wish!"
Yvonne Sherman was much calmer than Joanna. She slowly walked around the front of the car to face her. "You said yourself that Seraphina Vaughn is with Lustra. How could we possibly interfere in Lustra’s affairs?"
Sophia ignored Yvonne Sherman, speaking only to Joanna.
Her voice was soft and melodic, but her tone was unyielding. "Listen closely. I *am* ordering you, and you *will* do it!"
"If you dare to disobey..."
With a flick of her wrist, the paper wrapping came partially undone, revealing a red cover underneath and the word "Divorce."
"I will personally deliver this booklet to Vincent Grant!"
The color drained from Joanna Sherman’s face, her ferocious expression turning to one of terror.
Sophia stepped closer, whispering in her ear, "As far as I know, Vincent Grant is unaware of my divorce. What do you think will happen when he finds out?"
Joanna stumbled back a step, her legs so weak she could barely stand.
She stared at Sophia as if she were seeing a ghost.
Sophia pulled the booklet back. "Now you know what to do."
She turned and got into the car with Jacobs.
Jacobs was amazed at how easily Sophia had terrified Joanna Sherman.
He hated Joanna Sherman, and as he left, he couldn’t resist sticking his tongue out at her.
"Get back, all of you!"
As soon as Sophia left, Yvonne Sherman ordered with a tense expression.
The maids and bodyguards quickly retreated.
Only then did Yvonne walk over and steady Joanna. "What on earth did Sophia show you?"
Their voices had been low, and the object in her hand had only been shown to Joanna, so Yvonne had no idea what had happened.
"AHHHH!"
Joanna hysterically threw off Yvonne’s arm, yanking at her own hair and letting out a piercing shriek.
She gritted her teeth, her eyes wide, her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles were white.
She screamed several more times, her body trembling with rage.
After a long moment, she stiffly reached a hand toward Yvonne. "Mom, let me use your phone."
Joanna’s state worried Yvonne deeply, but she handed over her phone without a word.
Joanna dialed a number and took several deep breaths before speaking. "Justin, find your cousin right now. Tell him to cut all ties with Seraphina Vaughn immediately!"
"What’s wrong? Everything was fine..."
"Just do it!"
After finishing the call, Joanna let her hand fall to her side.
Looking like a wilted eggplant after a frost, she called out to her mother, her voice breaking into a sob.
Yvonne quickly pulled her into a comforting embrace. Joanna, fists clenched, trembled in her arms. "She dared to order me! She actually dared to order me! An ant... an ant actually dared to bare its fangs at me!"
「In the car.」
Jacobs was still reveling in the memory of Joanna Sherman’s expression—seething with hatred but forced to accept her fate. He was so pleased that he started humming a tune.
After humming for a while, he glanced at Sophia. "Boss, why don’t you tell that Grant guy he’s been divorced?"
Jacobs got excited just imagining the look on that Grant guy’s face when he found out he’d been divorced.
He really wanted to see it.
"Is it because you’re worried about upsetting the elders in the family?"
Jacobs had never been married or divorced, but he had a pretty good understanding of these things.
Sophia’s lowered lashes fluttered.
"That’s not the only reason."
’Worrying my grandmother is one reason,’
’but the most important thing is that I genuinely want to divorce Vincent Grant.’
’Although Vincent Grant signed the divorce agreement himself, the proceedings weren’t exactly official. I have to wait until a year has passed, when he can no longer use the agreement to change anything. Only then will it be set in stone.’
"What if someone in the Sherman Family with bad intentions leaks this to use against you?"
Joanna Sherman was a nasty piece of work, so it stood to reason that the rest of the Sherman Family wasn’t much better.
Sophia smiled. "Joanna Sherman won’t let anyone else find out about this."
’She needs to do everything in her power to hide it from Vincent Grant right now, so how could she possibly leak it?’
’Still, I need to take precautions.’
’The only person in the family who doesn’t want me to get divorced is my grandmother. I have to find a way to make her accept the reality of our divorce.’
Sophia knew that in her grandmother’s heart, marriage was the only true security for a woman.
Her mother’s suicide over a broken marriage had only reinforced that belief.
Times were changing, but old mindsets were hard to break. She could only try to change her grandmother’s perspective little by little.
Worried about Seraphina Vaughn, Sophia drove to Lustra.
When she arrived at Lustra, however, she was told that Seraphina had already left.
Sophia called her repeatedly, but Seraphina didn’t answer.
Left with no other choice, Sophia had to contact Levin Sawyer.
Levin Sawyer had once looked after Seraphina Vaughn for a time on behalf of Old Master Sloan. For her safety, he had even installed a tracking system on her phone.
By the time she finally managed to reach Levin Sawyer, it was already nine o’clock at night.
The tracking system showed Seraphina at a bar simply called "Bar."
Sophia rushed over, only to find several men surrounding Seraphina, trying to force-feed her alcohol.
Seraphina was accepting all comers, her face flushed and her eyes glazed over. It was obvious she was already very drunk.
Seeing her state, the men started pulling her toward the back door.
"Seraphina!" Sophia charged forward, shoved one of the men aside, and grabbed her.
"Who’s this?"
His fun ruined, the man was furious and glared at her viciously.
Sophia ignored the man’s question and pulled Seraphina toward the main entrance. "Come with me!"
Yanked along, Seraphina staggered. She opened her eyes, saw Sophia, and violently shook her hand off.
"Who the hell do you think you are? Stay out of my business!"
Shoved, Sophia stumbled backward.
Seeing how much Seraphina disliked Sophia, the men chimed in, "See that? She doesn’t want anything to do with you. Get lost!"
How could Sophia dare to leave her with these men? She pleaded sincerely, "Seraphina, let’s just talk!"
