I waited anxiously for the Lycan prince’s final verdict, my heart hammering so violently against my chest that it almost hurt. Each breath came faster than the last, my chest rising and falling rapidly as countless possibilities raced through my mind.

The silence in the room felt unbearable.

If things went badly—if the prince decided that my actions deserved punishment—then I had already made up my mind. No matter what happened, I would ask to share Galen’s punishment.

The thought settled heavily in my chest.

I didn’t fully understand why I felt that way—maybe it was guilt, maybe it was gratitude or maybe it was something else entirely.

All I knew was that the idea of standing by and watching Galen suffer because of me made my stomach twist painfully. I wasn’t sure I could bear it.

My fingers curled into tight fists at my sides as I waited.

Then, finally, the Lycan prince spoke.

"Galen, as long as you are sure you can keep him in check, then you can have it your way."

His deep voice echoed through the room, carrying the unquestionable authority of a ruler.

As he spoke, he rose from his seat with effortless grace. Every movement was calm, controlled, and powerful. Even something as simple as standing seemed majestic when he did it.

For a moment, I simply stared.

Had I heard him correctly?

My mind struggled to process his words.

Surely, I must have misunderstood.

The prince wasn’t punishing either of us?

Was he actually agreeing with Galen?

I remained frozen in place, trying to make sense of what had just happened.

Then Galen’s voice cut through my confusion.

"Thank you, Lycan prince." she said politely.

She lowered her head in a respectful bow while the prince gave a slight nod and continued toward the exit without another word.

Only then did the reality of the situation begin to sink in.

I hadn’t imagined it.

I hadn’t misheard.

The Lycan prince had truly agreed.

The second he disappeared from the room, Galen spun around and hurried toward me.

Before I could react, her fingers wrapped tightly around my hands.

"Come on."

She didn’t wait for a response, and she immediately dragged me behind her and out of the room.

We moved quickly through the hallway until we finally stepped into the open garden.

Fresh air greeted us at once.

The moment we were outside, Galen abruptly released my hands.

I barely had time to regain my balance before I noticed the furious expression on her face.

Her eyes narrowed dangerously.

"Are you insane?" she shouted.

I blinked.

The sudden outburst caught me completely off guard.

"What the hell did you tell the Lycan prince to get him so angry?"

This time, both hands landed firmly on her waist as she glared at me.

Honestly, I couldn’t understand why she was acting as though the world had ended.

Why was she being so dramatic?

"I didn’t say anything out of line, Galen," I replied, my voice calmer than I felt.

Avoiding her gaze, I turned away and began pacing around the garden.

The cool breeze brushed against my skin, but it did little to ease the tension knotting inside me.

Because despite the prince’s decision...despite Galen’s yelling...despite everything that had just happened...My mind remained trapped on one thing.

Maria.

Was she safe?

The question refused to leave me.

Every step I took only seemed to make the anxiety worse.

I needed answers.

And until I got them, I knew I wouldn’t be able to calm down.

Galen stared at me for a long moment.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed her eyebrows slowly rising, as though she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

The look on her face made me uncomfortable.

Why was she reacting like that?

I let out a frustrated sigh and finally stopped pacing around the garden. The constant movement wasn’t helping my nerves anyway.

"I just asked him a simple question, okay?" I said, throwing my hands up slightly.

My voice came out louder than I intended.

The entire situation was exhausting.

"I only asked what he intended to do with Maria!" I added firmly.

To me, it had been a reasonable question.

The moment the words left my mouth, Galen’s expression changed. The color seemed to drain from her face, and for a brief second, she simply stared at me.

Then her jaw tightened.

Something that looked dangerously close to anger flashed across her features.

"I can’t believe you’re still thinking about her, Daniel!"

Her voice was sharp, filled with obvious irritation.

I blinked in surprise.

Before I could say anything, she continued.

"You clearly told me that you only approached her because you felt she was useful!"

Her voice rose slightly with every word. The frustration in her tone was impossible to miss.

She dragged a hand through her hair, her movements quick and restless. It was almost as if she was struggling to keep herself calm.

Watching her reaction left me slightly taken aback.

I genuinely didn’t understand it.

Why was she acting so worked up?

Why was she making such a big deal out of this?

I wasn’t doing anything wrong.

I had only wanted to know whether Maria was safe.

That was all.

Yet Galen looked as though I had just confessed to committing some terrible crime.

"Daniel," she said suddenly, her voice quieter this time.

I slowly lifted my gaze toward her.

"Don’t tell me that back then, during the Alpha’s gathering, you fell in love with her?"

The question hung heavily between us.

Galen’s eyes locked onto mine, refusing to look away.

I frowned immediately.

What was wrong with her?

Why would she even ask something like that?

My thoughts drifted back to that day. Back then, I had been captivated by Maria’s beauty.

There was no point denying it, she had stood out the moment she entered the gathering.

And when I saw multiple Alphas competing for her attention, fighting over the chance to be close to her, my curiosity had only grown stronger.

I had been drawn in.

Perhaps I had acted impulsively.

Perhaps my decisions back then hadn’t been entirely rational, but things were different now. Somewhere along the way, those feelings had become real.

Much more real than I had expected.

And deep down, I knew the truth.

I loved Maria, not because of her beauty, not because of the attention she received, not because she could be useful.

I loved her with all my heart.

The realization sat heavily inside my chest but the words refused to leave my mouth.

I remained silent.

And my silence was answer enough.

Galen stared at me for another second before letting out a bitter scoff.

"I can’t believe my guess was right."

Disappointment and disbelief dripped from every word.

I watched as she shook her head slowly, then, without waiting for a response, she turned around.

The conversation was clearly over in her mind.

"Galen—"

The word barely left my lips but she didn’t stop nor did she look back.

Without wasting another moment on me, she simply walked away, leaving me standing alone in the garden as confusion, frustration, and worry swirled endlessly inside my chest.
