The room remained exactly as it had been—every object in its place, arranged with the precision that defined him. Nothing had shifted. Nothing had been disturbed.
Lu Shaohan released her wrist once they were inside. His hand lingered for the briefest moment longer than necessary before withdrawing completely.
"Sleep," he said. The word carried no softness, yet neither was it harsh. It was simply final. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Su Wan did not respond. She moved to the bed and sat down carefully, the motion drawing a muted wave of pain through her arm. It showed only in the slight pause before she adjusted her position and settled.
Lu Shaohan remained where he was a moment longer. He watched her—not closely enough to suggest concern, not distantly enough to suggest indifference.
Then he reached for the light.
Darkness settled over the room. The tension that had followed her from the hospital did not disappear, but it loosened just enough to allow stillness to take its place.
Not resolved. Not gone. Only paused.
-----
Light returned slowly, filtering through the room in a way that did not disturb but quietly insisted on presence.
Su Wan opened her eyes. The first thing she felt was the pain. It had not lessened. Sleep had not dulled it. It remained steady, deep, and unyielding.
She sat up with care, the stiffness in her arm more pronounced now, the bandage tighter after hours of stillness.
The room was quiet. A servant stood near the door, waiting. She had been there long enough to anticipate the moment Su Wan would wake, yet she did not move or speak until acknowledged.
When Su Wan’s gaze reached her, the servant stepped forward.
"Madam, Old Master Lu requests your presence." There was no urgency in her tone, but no room for delay either.
Su Wan rose from the bed, her movements deliberate. She adjusted her clothing, ensuring that nothing appeared out of place, that nothing suggested disorder.
Then she left the room.
The main hall was already occupied. Not crowded, but complete.
Old Master Lu sat at the center, his presence steady and unyielding. Second Madam remained beside him, composed as always. Lu Meiqi stood slightly forward, her attention fixed on the entrance. The aunts were arranged around them, expressions controlled yet alert.
Lu Shaohan was already there.
When Su Wan entered, the atmosphere shifted. It was not visible in movement, but it settled across the room in a way that could not be ignored.
Every gaze turned toward her. They took in the bandaged arm, the faint pallor that had not fully left her face, the measured steadiness of her posture. They noted the two men behind her, their presence no longer subtle, no longer deniable.
She walked forward without hesitation. She did not greet. She did not bow.
She sat. Uninvited.
Silence held for a brief moment.
Then the questions began. They were not shouted. They did not need to be. Each one was placed carefully, layered over the next.
"You left the house with them."
"What exactly happened last night?"
"Why were you in that room?"
The words came from different directions, yet aligned in intention.
Lu Meiqi stepped forward slightly, her voice cutting through the others with sharper clarity.
"Or perhaps we should ask something more direct." Her gaze shifted deliberately to Su Wan’s stomach before returning to her face. "Whose child are you carrying?"
The room stilled instantly. Not because the thought was new, but because it had finally been spoken aloud.
Su Wan did not answer immediately. She allowed the silence to settle, to stretch, to deepen just enough that it pressed back against the question itself.
And then—before she could speak—a servant entered hurriedly, her composure breaking just enough to be noticeable.
"Old Master... there are guests—"
She did not finish. Because the guests had already arrived.
The first woman stepped into the hall with hesitation. Her movements were careful, her posture guarded, one hand resting lightly over her abdomen as though steadying herself rather than drawing attention. She paused just inside the threshold, uncertain but present.
Before the room could fully take her in, another followed. This one entered more quietly, her gaze lowered, her steps measured. She did not speak. She observed, taking in the room, the arrangement of people, the tension that hung between them.
Then came the third. She did not hesitate at the entrance. Her posture was more composed, her chin slightly lifted, her expression less uncertain than the others. She stepped forward with a steadiness that suggested she had already decided her place within the room.
All three bore the same unmistakable sign. Their figures were altered in a way that could not be overlooked. Their condition was evident, though no words were used to define it.
The air in the hall shifted again—heavier, sharper, more complicated.
Su Wan’s gaze moved across them, slowly and she recognized one. The one she had arranged.
The other two were unfamiliar. Unaccounted for. Not part of her design.
The first woman spoke, her voice soft and uncertain. "I... was told to come..." She did not finish. She did not need to.
The second remained silent.
The third met the room without hesitation.
No one spoke for a moment. Because what stood before them had not yet been named.
Three women. Three presences. Three possibilities. And no one, yet, had claimed what they meant.
The balance in the room did not break all at once. It shifted.
And in that shift—everything became uncertain.
---
The room had not yet recovered from the disruption of their arrival.
The three women stood near the entrance, their presence still unplaced, their purpose undefined. The air felt heavier now, as though something unseen had entered with them and settled between everyone present.
No one spoke immediately. Because no one was certain where to begin.
Lu Meiqi’s lips parted first, the instinct to seize control already rising—but before any word could leave her, Su Wan moved.
It was not a large movement. She did not stand. She did not raise her voice. She simply shifted her gaze toward Old Master Lu and spoke.
