The qualification closed, and the Mountain went quiet.
Across the dome, in a tower suite high above the city, a young woman watched the final standings settle on a screen of pale light and did not move for a long moment.
She was poised, elegant, the kind of beauty that came with generations of careful breeding behind it, dark hair swept back from a face that gave away nothing. Melody Sinclair, of the Sinclair family, ninth in all the Riglight Galactic Alliance, and a Soul Tree expert of no small repute. She had spent the entire qualification keeping a low profile, revealing only what she needed to, drawing no more eyes than necessary. It was how the Sinclairs had always operated. Power was loudest when it was quiet.
But something on that Mountain had caught her attention, and held it.
A name she did not know. A Core Genesis nobody who had, over thirty-six hours of recorded skirmishes, done things a Core Genesis fighter simply should not be able to do. She replayed a clip of it, a single fused beam of fire and wind threading a man’s shoulder faster than the eye could follow, and her composed expression flickered with something rare for her.
Interest.
"Rudrean," she murmured, tasting the unfamiliar name. "No family. No backing. No history at all." A slow, thoughtful breath. "And strength like that."
She did not believe in coincidences any more than Elder Tyoga did. A talent like this did not simply appear from nowhere. There was a story here, and Melody Sinclair had always liked a good story.
"I think," she said softly, to the empty room, "I would like to meet you."
...
With the final thousand chosen, the Alliance announced the terms of the interval.
[One thousand qualified. The Secret Realm opens in twenty-four hours. Form your teams. One hundred teams of ten will enter.]
The rules of team-forming were loose by design. There were no restrictions. Core Genesis and Soul Tree experts could mix freely, and indeed the Alliance recommended it, advising that a balanced team of both stages would fare best inside the realm. A grand dome had been set aside for the thousand, a vast hall of lounges and meeting spaces where the qualified could mingle, measure each other, and stitch their hundred teams together over the day ahead.
And along with the interval came something that turned the whole gathering on its head.
The rankings had been recalculated.
The Spirit Bells had not only tested the will to hold. Throughout the trial they had quietly scanned every holder, measuring true stats and combat power far more accurately than the rough VR preliminary ever could. And when the new top-thousand board posted itself across every card and screen in the dome, it was not the board anyone had expected.
Because the hidden ones were hidden no longer.
[Qualification Leaderboard, Top 10]
[1. Wren Volcain — Soul Tree]
[2. Melody Sinclair — Soul Tree]
[3. Sereth Maelan — Soul Tree]
[4. Dovane Kress — Soul Tree]
[5. Ophira Vance — Soul Tree]
[6. Sairon Drevane — Core Genesis]
[7. Mirae Solvane — Core Genesis]
[8. Rudrean — Core Genesis]
[9. Torvald Greythorn — Core Genesis]
[10. Halvar Sunn — Soul Tree]
A combined board, Soul Tree and Core Genesis tangled together, and the shock of it rippled through the dome within minutes.
Because Core Genesis names were not supposed to climb that high. The Soul Tree stage was a full realm above Core Genesis, a difference that should have been unbridgeable. And yet there they were: four Core Genesis names in the top ten, holding the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth spots, standing shoulder to shoulder with Soul Tree experts who had every right to look down on them.
And the most talked-about of all those names was the one at eighth.
Rudrean. Core Genesis. No family crest beside it. No backing, no house, no record before this gathering. A blank where every other name in the top ten carried the weight of a great clan.
He had not gone all out even on the Mountain. He’d never needed to. But holding a bell for thirty-six hours against a tide of attackers, with rivals constantly testing him, had drawn rather more than the fifty percent he’d shown in the VR chamber. Enough to be measured at his truer weight. Enough to land at eighth.
’So much for staying forgettable,’ Aelira said dryly across the link, scrolling the board. Her own name sat at **14th**, another Core Genesis impossibility, and Lyra’s at **87th**, remarkable for a crafter who’d barely thrown a punch. ’Darling, we are extremely not forgettable now.’
’No,’ Rudrean agreed, watching the numbers. ’But the field’s full of hidden monsters who just got exposed too. Four Core Genesis in the top ten. We’re shocking, but we’re not the only shock. That’s something.’
’Cold comfort,’ Isalyn noted from the mirror. ’You wanted to be a face in the crowd. Instead you are the eighth-strongest face in a crowd of a thousand, with no name to explain it. People will come asking. Some politely.’ A pause. ’Some not.’
...
The first to come was not polite. She was simply direct.
The team had barely entered the gathering dome when a five-person group cut a clean path toward them, parting the milling crowd by sheer presence. At their head walked a young woman wrapped in pale blue, her hair the white of fresh frost, her eyes colder still. The air around her ran a few degrees chill.
Lyra’s readout supplied the name before she spoke. [Kaesryn Vol. Vol Clan. Rank: 19th.] One of the four geniuses the frightened bystanders had whispered about on the Mountain. Her team trailed her, four Soul Tree experts to her single Core Genesis, all of them carrying themselves with the easy arrogance of a top-twenty clan.
"Rudrean. Eighth rank." Kaesryn stopped before them, her gaze flicking over the team with brisk, dismissive assessment before returning to him. "I am forming a team to win this realm. I have four Soul Tree experts. I want you, and your wife at fourteenth. The crafter at eighty-seven may come as well; she’ll be useful." Her chin lifted a fraction. "The other two are dead weight, but I’ll permit them for the head count. Join me, and we take the top prize. It is a simple calculation."
Silence.
Ryzen’s smile went stiff. Rivera’s expression cooled to glass.
Aelira looked at Kaesryn Vol for a long moment, then smiled, sweet and utterly without warmth.
"You know," she said pleasantly, "I was almost going to consider it, right up until ’dead weight.’" She slipped her arm through Rudrean’s. "We’re a team. All five of us. We don’t trade people for head count." Her smile sharpened. "Thanks, though. Genuinely. It’s always nice to know exactly who someone is in the first thirty seconds."
Kaesryn’s frost-pale eyes narrowed. For a moment it seemed she might press. Then she gave a single, dismissive sniff, turned on her heel, and led her group away without another word.
"Humph," Lyra quietly snorted, ears flat.
"Top-twenty clan heir," Rivera observed quietly. "She’s not used to the word ’no.’" 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
"She’ll live," Rudrean said, watching the frost-haired girl vanish into the crowd. "Come on. The dome’s barely filling up yet. Half these people are still licking their wounds from the Mountain. Let’s eat, take stock, and figure out who we actually want."
