- Chapter 1: Stop The Spell
Zen stood perfectly still. He did not panic or react like he was taken by surprise even though he just was. He just turned around and looked at Valeria.
The silence stretched through the bedroom for ten agonizing seconds.
Then Valeria’s composure cracked.
It was not an outburst of rage or the destructive anger of the Goddess of War that had destroyed entire fields of monsters in the past.
Instead it was like watching a thick pane of glass finally shattering at the seams after being strained by five centuries of pressure.
Valeria did not lunge at him with her blade. She slid off the plush velvet chair, her fake academy glasses forgotten, dropping his leather-bound notebook to the hardwood floor.
Her knees hit the ground with a thud. She crawled forward bridging the gap between them and pressed her forehead directly against Zen’s legs.
Then she started talking in a voice Zen had never heard from her before.
Not her commanding tone, her psychotic whisper, or the fake stuttering pitch of the clumsy academy student. It was something real, stripped entirely bare of all her defenses.
"I am sorry," Valeria whispered into the fabric of his pants in a shaky voice. "I am so, so sorry Zen. I’m sorry."
"Valeria," Zen started, sounding cautious.
"No, please, let me speak" she begged as her fingers dug into his calves. "I am sorry for taking five hundred years to find you. I should have searched harder. I shouldn’t have stopped looking in the wastelands. I should have torn the continents apart piece by piece, stone by stone until I dug you out of whatever hell you were trapped in. I’m sorry for the world I built while you were gone."
"You built an empire," Zen said looking down at her trembling shoulders. "You maintained order."
"I built a graveyard!" she sobbed looking up at him with tear-streaked cheeks and glowing red eyes.
"I made every decision without you. Every day I woke up. You were not there so I just kept killing until the world was quiet enough to hear myself think. I made the Vanguard because I needed soldiers to look for you. I made District 7 because I needed a place to hide when the grief got too heavy. And I’m sorry for the vault."
Zen narrowed his eyes, momentarily forgetting the dull ache in his ribs. "What vault?"
Valeria buried her face back into his legs, her golden mana flickering erratically around her. "The one I’m already mentally blueprinting miles beneath this townhouse. The one with titanium walls and S-Rank suppression wards and atmospheric scrubbers. I was going to put you in it tomorrow. I was going to drug your food, drag you there and lock you in it with me so the world could never touch you again."
Zen let out a measured breath.
"I am sorry I want to lock you," Valeria wept her voice muffled against his skin. "I know it is wrong. I know you hate cages. I know you loved the sky. I just... I cannot watch you die again. I can’t. I will burn this planet to ash. I will slaughter every single student in this academy before I watch you stop breathing a second time. I am so sorry."
Zen let her finish. He let the silence settle over the room again, listening to her ragged breathing and the faint dull throb of his own healing ribs.
Then he moved.
Zen reached down. Grabbed her face with both hands. He did not use the gently touch of a comforting lover.
He gripped her jaw firmly, his thumbs pressing into her cheeks and forced her chin up. He looked directly into her manic red eyes, handling her without fear.
He didn’t look like a weak, crippled F-Rank student playing dress-up. He looked like an Emperor who had completely run out of patience with being underestimated by his own subordinates.
"You forgot your place, Valeria," Zen said.
He did not raise his voice. He did not need to. The quiet authority in his tone was worse than a shout.
"I am sorry," she whimpered again her eyes wide.
"Stop apologizing and listen to me," Zen commanded. "I did not die on that altar five hundred years ago so you could turn into a warden. I am not a fragile toy to be locked away. I am not a project for you to complete. And I am certainly not a prisoner to be shoved into a titanium box."
"But they will hurt you" Valeria argued, her hands coming up to grip his wrists desperately.
"You do not understand what it’s like out there now. The Inquisitor is already looking for the S-Rank anomaly. Nyx is out there watching the networks! Aurelia controls the money! You are too weak right now, Zen! Your core is shattered! You do not understand how dangerous the others have gotten."
"I understand danger perfectly well," Zen replied coldly, tightening his grip just enough to remind her who was in charge. "You built a world for five centuries, Valeria and you completely forgot the first thing I ever taught you on the battlefield."
Valeria blinked through her tears her breath hitching in her throat. "What?"
"That the strongest cage is the one you choose to walk into" Zen said. "You think titanium walls will keep me safe. You think strong wards will stop the Void or Nyx or time itself. If you lock me in a vault, you are not protecting me. You are just digging my grave ahead of schedule. An Emperor does not hide."
A visible shudder ran through her body.
The violent golden aura that usually leaked from her skin when she was unstable suddenly died. She looked up at him and the crazy edge in her eyes completely vanished. It was replaced by submission. And underneath that submission was something else... total relief.
He was here. He was actually here. He was talking to her, dominating the space, correcting her mistakes, and he sounded exactly like himself. The man she had followed into hell and back.
"I... I understand," she whispered, her hands slowly releasing his wrists dropping obediently to her sides.
"Do you?" Zen asked testing the boundary of his recovered authority.
"Yes, my Emperor," she breathed, her voice filled with reverence.
"Good. Then stand up," he commanded.
Valeria did not hesitate. She stood up smoothly, wiping the tears from her face. She kept her eyes trained on his collarbone waiting for his next order like a loyal soldier.
Zen looked at her. He was pragmatic above everything else. He was currently running on Nyx’s twenty-four-hour death timer.
If he didn’t get his power back, Nyx would leak his identity, and this entire city would become a warzone before lunch. He needed his soul fragment right now.
And his System had already explicitly told him exactly what kind of contact produced the transfer.
What happened next was not soft or playful; it was the Emperor making a tactical decision with full emotional awareness of exactly what it meant to pull the pin on this particular grenade.
Zen closed the remaining distance between them. He took her face in his hands again, tilted her head slightly and kissed her.
Valeria made a sound in the back of her throat that had not existed in five hundred years. It was a pathetic, desperate whimper of pure ecstasy.
Her arms instantly flew up wrapping around his neck with bruising force as she pulled her body flush against his, desperate to consume every millimeter of the contact.
The System responded immediately, the blue text flashing rapidly in the corner of his vision.
[Dual Cultivation: INITIATED.]
[Fragment ’Body’. Direct mana pathway open. Target core identified: Goddess of War.]
[Transfer rate: 0.08% per minute.]
[Estimated full recovery of fragment at contact: 21 hours.]
[Phase Two recovery: BEGUN.]
For a fraction of a second, everything in the world felt exactly right.
The warmth that filled Zen’s chest from her lips was more than just magic; it was recognition. A part of himself that had remained hollow and aching since he first awoke in this fragile body began to glow.
Valeria was totally lost in the sensation. Her golden Aegis mana poured out of her, wrapping around him like a warm blanket trying to heal him, protect him, and tie him to her all at once.
But then, the golden magic went deeper into Zen’s body.
It swept past his healing ribs flowed through his bloodstream looking for any injuries to fix. And inevitably, it crashed violently into the faint, secondary heartbeat echoing deep inside his chest.
Valeria went completely still.
Her lips stopped moving, and her tight grip on his neck loosened.
Zen opened his eyes, feeling the change in the air. The temperature in the room had crashed in seconds.
Valeria pulled back slowly, keeping her face close to his.
And her expression was terrifying.
"Valeria?" Zen asked, keeping his hands on her waist ready to dodge if she summoned her broadsword.
Her fangs slowly extended over her bottom lips in the dim moonlight. The red glow in her eyes was so bright it cast shadows on the walls.
"Whose mana" Valeria whispered in a trembling, quiet voice, "is inside you?"
