The grand banquet hall of the Sunless Throne was a masterpiece of gothic architecture. Tonight it was bathed in the eerie crimson glow of the Blood Moon shining through the massive glass skylights.
Long tables of polished obsidian were laden with roasted meats exotic fruits and towering crystal decanters of dark wine. The entire court was in attendance. Lords and ladies dressed in their finest silks whispered among themselves their faces illuminated by the floating violet orbs that served as chandeliers.
At the head of the hall sitting upon a raised dais was Queen Ravena. She wore a gown of deep crimson that mirrored the moon above. She looked like a dark goddess of war and beauty.
Silas sat at the consort table situated just below the dais. He wore a tailored tunic of midnight blue. His posture was relaxed but his dark eyes missed nothing. He was mapping the room.
To his left sat Lysander. The golden haired consort was drinking heavily. His hands trembled slightly but a smug triumphant smile played on his lips. He kept glancing toward the heavy wooden side doors of the banquet hall. The doors that were supposed to be locked and guarded.
To the right of the dais sat Lady Seraphina Caligari. The Silk Spider wore a gown of spun gold. She caught Silas looking at her and raised her goblet in a silent mocking toast. She was waiting for the magic to break him.
And standing beside the Queen was High Priest Malakor. The skeletal man held the Chalice of Shadows in his bony hands. The chalice was forged from dark iron and encrusted with black diamonds.
The trap was set. The jaws were closing.
Silas opened his System interface beneath the table.

He had not purchased any new skills. He did not need to. Elara had warned him about the soul binding elixir and Lyra had provided him with the architectural blueprints of the hall. He knew exactly how the magic worked and he knew exactly where the mercenaries would enter.
He was not going to fight the magic. He was going to weaponize it.
A heavy gong echoed through the hall silencing the chatter of the nobles.
High Priest Malakor stepped forward raising the Chalice of Shadows high above his head.
"The Blood Moon rises," Malakor chanted his voice echoing with dark magical resonance. "We drink to the shadows that shield us. We drink to the dark gods who grant us power. Let the Queen and her chosen partake in the communion of souls."
Ravena stood up. She took the chalice from Malakor and drank deeply. She handed it back to the High Priest her silver eyes glowing with power.
Malakor descended the steps of the dais and approached the consort table. The ritual demanded that each consort drink from the cup to prove their absolute loyalty to the crown.
He offered the chalice to the first consort a terrified young man from the northern provinces. The boy drank and passed it along.
Lysander took the cup when it reached him. He took a small sip his blue eyes darting toward the side doors again. He handed the chalice back to Malakor.
Malakor did not pass the cup to the next consort. He walked directly over to Silas.
The High Priest smiled a cruel skeletal smile. His blind white eyes seemed to bore directly into Silas’s skull.
"Drink Silas of House Vane," Malakor whispered his voice dripping with malice. "Drink deep and let the gods see your true soul."
Silas looked at the dark liquid swirling inside the iron cup. He knew it was laced. He knew Seraphina was watching him with bated breath. He knew Ravena was observing the exchange with intense curiosity.
Silas did not hesitate. He reached out took the Chalice of Shadows and brought it to his lips.
He drank the soul binding elixir.
It tasted like ash and copper. The liquid burned its way down his throat spreading a freezing unnatural cold through his veins.
"Now," Malakor hissed reaching out and placing his bony hand directly onto Silas’s forehead. "Let us see the treason hiding in your heart."
The magic activated. Silas felt a violent tearing sensation in his mind as the High Priest forcibly ripped away his mental barriers. The elixir bypassed his physical resistance entirely. It was a direct bridge connecting Malakor’s mind to Silas’s soul.
Seraphina leaned forward in her chair waiting for Silas to fall to his knees and confess his crimes. Lysander gripped the edge of the table waiting for the destruction of his rival.
But Silas did not fall. He simply closed his eyes and opened the gates of his mind completely letting the High Priest step into the void.
