Silas stood bare chested in his private washroom letting the cold water run over his shoulders. He looked at his reflection in the polished silver mirror. Faint red marks lined his collarbone and a shallow scratch rested just above his ribs.
The entire court whispered about Queen Ravena’s insatiable appetite. The lords and ladies believed the consorts were brought to her chambers for wild nights of unbridled passion. It was a brilliant piece of propaganda designed to make the Queen seem like a dark goddess of desire.
It was also a complete lie.
Silas splashed cold water on his face. In the three nights he had spent in the Queen’s private chambers they had not engaged in sexual intercourse. In fact Silas was absolutely certain she had never slept with any of the consorts. Not even Lysander.
Ravena was an apex predator. To engage in the physical act of love required a momentary surrender of control. It required vulnerability. And the Queen of the Sunless Throne despised vulnerability.
Instead she engaged in foul play. It was psychological torture disguised as intimacy. She would bind her consorts in cold iron trace their veins with poisoned daggers and push them to the absolute brink of madness. She fed on their terror their weeping and their desperate pleas for mercy. Lysander had survived his tenure by learning exactly how to weep beautifully and beg for her dominance.
Silas survived by giving her nothing. He used his System skills to suppress his heart rate and maintain a perfect mask of cold calculation. He turned her sadistic games into a battle of wills. She did not want his body. She wanted to break his mind. And the fact that she could not break him was driving her into a state of dangerous obsession.
Silas dried himself off and walked back into his bedchamber. He sat at his small wooden desk and pulled out a piece of blank parchment.
He dipped a quill in ink and began to draw a map from the memories of the original Lord Silas. He needed to understand the geopolitical board he was playing on.
He drew a massive landmass to the east. The Radiant Court. They were an empire of religious zealots who worshipped the sun just like the fallen kingdom of Aethelgard. Their armies were vast and their paladins wielded holy magic that could incinerate a man in seconds. They were wealthy powerful and completely unified under the Radiant Emperor.
To the west he drew a cluster of jagged islands. The Iron Archipelago. They possessed no magic but their naval fleet was unmatched. They relied on brutal mercenaries and advanced siege technology. They were a nation of pirates and warlords who sold their swords to the highest bidder.
And in the center trapped between the holy fire of the east and the iron dreadnoughts of the west was the Sunless Throne.
Silas stared at the map. The Sunless Throne was geographically doomed. They had a fraction of the manpower of the Radiant Court and none of the naval supremacy of the Archipelago. The only reason Ravena’s empire had not been wiped off the map was the perpetual twilight. The Eclipse Conclave had cast a massive shadow veil over the borders. The darkness blinded the sun priests and hid the mountain passes from the mercenaries.
The Sunless Throne survived purely on fear and magical obscurity. It was a fragile house of cards. If the twilight veil ever fell the Radiant Court would march across the border and burn the palace to the ground in a matter of weeks.
A soft knock at the door pulled Silas from his strategic planning.
Elara slipped into the room. She locked the door behind her and hurried over to the desk. Her pale green eyes were wide with urgency.
"Silas," Elara whispered leaning close. "I was cleaning the antechamber outside the sanctuary of the Eclipse Conclave. Lady Seraphina visited High Priest Malakor. I listened at the vents."
Silas set his quill down giving her his full attention. "What did the Silk Spider want with the High Priest?"
"They were talking about you," Elara said her voice trembling slightly. "Malakor is brewing something in the scrying pools for the Blood Moon Banquet. It happens in three days. It is a sacred tradition where the Queen and all her consorts must drink from the Chalice of Shadows. I heard them say they are going to lace your cup with a mind breaking elixir."
Silas narrowed his eyes. "A truth serum?"
"Worse," Elara shivered. "Malakor called it a soul binding draught. He said it strips away all mental defenses and forces the drinker to confess their deepest secrets. They want to force you to confess to treason in front of the Queen and the entire court." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
Silas leaned back in his chair. Elara thought they were just trying to make him confess to stealing the gate manifest or plotting against the crown. But Silas knew the reality was infinitely more dangerous.
If a magical elixir shattered his mental defenses and forced his soul bare they would not just hear about his spy network. They would see the System. They would see the corporate raider from Earth. They would realize that the original Lord Silas was dead and a foreign entity was piloting his body. That was a secret that would get him burned at the stake by the Eclipse Conclave.
Silas looked at his System interface.

[Mithridatism Level 1: Active. Grants twenty percent resistance to common poisons.]
A soul binding elixir brewed by the High Priest was not a common poison. It was high level dark magic. His current physical resistance would do absolutely nothing to stop it. And if he refused to drink from the Chalice of Shadows during a sacred banquet Ravena would be forced to execute him for heresy in front of the entire court.
It was a perfect checkmate.
Silas smiled. A cold genuine thrill coursed through his veins. He loved a good trap.
"Thank you Elara," Silas said standing up and pulling her into a gentle embrace. "You have done perfectly. Return to your duties and act as if nothing is wrong."
"What are you going to do?" she asked looking up at him with deep concern. "If you drink it they will destroy you."
"I am going to prepare for a banquet," Silas replied his dark eyes gleaming with anticipation. "If the High Priest wants to look into my mind I will make sure he sees exactly what I want him to see."
