KEISHA’S POV
I wasn’t sure why I went out to the eastern trail like Orin had suggested.
The sun was just dipping below the horizon, leaves scattered across the pack grounds as I made my way through the almost deserted eastern trail.
It was...peaceful.
Definitely something I needed right now. My fingers were tucked deep into my coat as I walked down the trail, just soaking in the view.
This wasㅡ
"Keisha?" A familiar voice called out behind me, followed by the sound of light jogging as the person struggled to catch up.
I immediately stopped and turned around in time to see Orin with a huge smile plastered on his face. "Orin." My smile was somewhat genuine.
He was a nice person so yeah. I could be warm to him.
He looked around, just standing there with his cheeks flushed from the cold. "You didn’t tell me you were going to check out the trail. I would have loved to take you myself and show you around."
I let out a huff, waving dismissively. "Ahㅡ no, I didn’t want to be a bother. It had been a few days and I guessed you would be on patrol or something."
"Pleaseㅡ I’m free as a bird right now. Let me show you the ridge like I said. I promise you, the view is breathtaking." His voice was filled with a compelling sense of invitation as he stretched his hand out to me.
For a second, I stared down at his hand with a thin smile, then I looked back at him. "I’m not actually looking to do that now. I have to get back to the office."
Realization dawned on him and he immediately dropped his hand to the side. "Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know that. I shouldn’t keep you then. Can I at least walk you?"
My gaze darted to the stretch of lonely road ahead of me. Well, there wasn’t any harm.
I turned back to him. "I don’t see why not."
A smile lit up his face and he stepped forward, falling into step with me.
My feet moved quietly against the ground and I just stared down the path ahead of us.
Honestly, I thought the walk would be silent but somehow, he managed to fill it with light conversation.
"ㅡ rigid. I think it’s actually quite annoying having someone like that." He gestured vaguely.
A laugh escaped me and I stopped, turning to him. "You can’t just say that about your commander."
He gave me a slight shrug. "Just being honest with you, Keisha."
The lights from my work building were just a few meters away and I rocked back and forth on my heels. "So...uh..."
A smile spread his lips as he looked at it and then back at me. "Work calls, huh?"
I nodded. "Thank you."
His gaze didn’t falter. "Anytime, Keisha. I like spending time with you."
My heart jumped a bit with shock. Then his gaze dropped down to my lips. Just for a second. Then he was stepping back. "I guess we’ll see later?"
My hands drew my coat tighter over my body. "Yeah sure."
He gave me one last lingering look, then walked off.
As soon as he disappeared into the distance, I let out a sigh of relief.
Well, that was weird.
With that, I turned and walked straight to the building. I had forgotten to file in a few stuff, which is why I was here at this hour to correct those mistakes and go through the records again.
The office was empty, save from for Danielle ㅡ a woman in her mid 30s hunched over her table and punching keys on her laptop.
I smiled softly at her which she barely returned before focusing on her work again, and I went over to my office, settling down heavily on it.
Okay.
Records.
My fingers moved lightly as I went through the pack records. My brows furrowed and I scrolled back to check it properly. Huh? That was weird.
There was a gap in the filing system. Likeㅡ several months of interpack communication logs that were meant to be archived were gone.
I chewed on my bottom lip thoughtfully. Mistake?
Probably.
I filed that away in my head and shut down my laptop, turning to face the stale wall instead.
Diane was being insufferable as well tonight. "Seems like you’re getting close to the pack dude.
"His name is Orin." I corrected her.
She let out a huff to tell me that she did not care. "Whatever. He’s simply a distraction and it’s boring. Couldn’t compare to the pull of theㅡ"
I immediately shut her down before she could make another statement.
She wasn’t wrong. I knew that. And somehow, that was what bothered me. Because I knew I had never felt so out of control for my own body.
Ugh. This wasn’t helping. I had work tomorrow and I needed to get some sleep.
Putting my things away, I bade goodbye to Danielle and walked out of the building, heading straight for my apartment.
The night air was cool and crisp. For a second, I expected Dane or Alpha Callum to pop out of nowhere and ruin my sense of peace for the day.
But nothing.
Were they avoiding me?
My fingers gripped the strap of my bag tighter and I walked faster.
As soon as I got into my house, I kicked off my shoes, changed my clothes and was about to drink one last cup of water before going to bed. That was when I saw it.
A silhouette standing right on my porch.
My heart jumped and I tilted my head to get a better look from the window.
The person was already moving. Retreating. Without thinking, I had rushed to the window, pulling the blinds aside a bit to see who it was.
My heart seemed to stop when I felt it. The tug of the mate bond.
And that was when I saw him too. Alpha Callum. He was already a good distance from the house, dark coat wrapped around his tall frame as he stood a good feet away, staring at the window.
As though he could see me.
He probably could. Wouldn’t be surprised. Maybe he could also smell my nervousness.
One thing was sure thoughㅡ He’d come to my house. But...he never knocked.
And I didn’t know how that made feel.
