The damage notification blinked a sharp, lethal red and breathed a new level of motivation into Xavier as he watched the HUD over the boss change.

It was a good sight to witness because it meant the party’s advantage to achieve easier critical damage had finally been triggered.

What that meant was they couldn’t afford to relent now.

It was the perfect opportunity to get a few hits in before Vaguis reset and used his next sequence of attacks.

Vaguis staggered back after Priya’s hit, but it lost its composure for only about two seconds.

The Imp, which in demon purity evolution was only a rank above a lesser demon like Xavier...

...wasn’t having any of it.

Its fiery red eyes immediately snapped towards where the damage came from and, for the first time...

It roared...

"Rarrrghh"

[ Imp’s Fear]

A powerful wave of energy burst towards Priya.

The attack threatened to taint the girl’s mind with fear, as well as crush her bones beneath its pure ferocity.

She slanted her common iron sword across her body like it was a shield while attempting to dodge...

The white-eyed Priya skidded backwards diagonally, barely avoiding the full brunt of the assault thanks to her Talent’s incredible perception.

Had she been a fraction slower, they would’ve been scraping pieces of her mangled body off the mirror floor.

But even then...

Vaguis didn’t let her out of his sight. It raised its sword for another assault in her direction.

But Xavier, and especially Timothee, weren’t about to let that happen.

The Titan-blooded Warrior swung the massive Sentinel Shield in his hand, bashing it directly into Vaguis’s midsection.

Interrupting the attack Priya definitely couldn’t defend against and pulling the Aggro away from her and back to himself.

Xavier took that opportunity to readjust.

Camouflaging again...

He knew better than to stay in one position.

"Dex... Juo!" he called out from nowhere in particular.

And as always, Dex was the first to respond, using what little remained of his reserves.

He fired from his new position.

One arrow buried itself in the joint of Vaguis’s sword arm.

The next skidded harmlessly off the chest armor, but the third found the softer hide just beneath the throat.

And once again, it triggered.

All the while, Juo’s staff remained pointed forward, the crystal at its tip glowing as a large amount of mana gathered around it.

She was charging up for something big, and Xavier had been expecting it.

But that wasn’t his biggest concern now. He needed to push Vaguis even further.

He needed to push the Imp over the edge. And since Dex’s attack wasn’t enough...

Xavier came from another angle, circling around in his camouflaged state to arrive behind his target.

"I’ve still got him!" Timothee confirmed, raising his shield for another strike from Vaguis that forced him , further aggravating his already blistered arm.

"Tch"

As soon as Xavier appeared, the retreated chain from earlier lashed out again, its edges shimmering this time.

"Nah...Not today!" Xavier whispered at the sight.

He twisted and barreled to the side, dodging it completely.

He came up a second later... his eyes already set on the weak spot only a madman like him would attempt.

The defense plating was very thick there, but it also bent and flexed even as the chains tethered to it rattled.

This was the spot between the shoulder blades where the body’s movement forced a gap every now and then.

And just as Vaguis moved to slash Timothee with its massive sword...

Xavier took advantage. He leaped forward, both hands wrapping around the hilt of his dagger.

Stab!

He plunged the stainless dagger right into the opening.

Another critical hit. Just as Xavier expected.

This was it...

Vaguis was beyond the edge now as its health approached fifty percent. This was the sweet spot where its level increased and the possibility of critical hits gets higher.

The demonic Imp roared viciously, shaking the whole cathedral as every chain tethered to it went wild in a fit of rage.

Its ember-red eyes completely ignored Timothee now and snapped towards Xavier’s position.

"...."

But to its greatest surprise...

Xavier wasn’t behind it.

Technically, he was... but not in the way the Imp expected.

This was because Xavier was on its back, his fingers tightly wrapped around the dagger as leverage, his legs perched against the Imp’s back for footing.

Xavier half-turned towards the party, winking at Priya and Dex, who had their mouths hanging open, stunned by his guts.

"Anytime... now, Juo!" Xavier said, twisting the dagger until it snapped before leaping away leaving the blade still lunged in Vaguis’s back.

Juo simultaneously released the skill she had been charging, the compressed column of water didn’t come like a stream this time.

Instead, it was like a torpedo that crossed the distance in the blink of an eye before slamming into the back of Vaguis, exactly where Xavier’s dagger had been left behind.

It didn’t send him flying across the cathedral or anything...

But the attack bored a hole straight through his back.

The Imp stood motionless.

Xavier landed right next to Timothee, his eyes moving to Juo.

He nodded in approval. At least he pretended to.

Their eyes met for a second before she adjusted her glasses and simply nodded back.

But Xavier had been watching her throughout the dungeon.

The way she tracked Vaguis’s HP. How she never wasted mana.

The way her staff was always positioned as though she were waiting for something.

"You naughty naughty girl," Xavier said inwardly.

But at this point, Vaguis was beyond the edge.

The demon Imp was pissed.

Waves of thick grey smoke poured from its body, and its head turned a full one hundred and eighty degrees.

Its ember-red eyes settled on a single target in a rather unsettling manner.

Juo!

Its body, without even fully turning, grabbed onto its massive sword-turned-spear.

Holding it up, the Imp prepared to hurl it like a javelin.

"You’ve got him, love..." Xavier said in a mocking British tone as he split away from Timothee again.

Juo flinched at his words, but regained her composure just in time to stretch her staff forward, ready to charge what might be the final attack.

And the rest of the party?

Well... they moved to Juo’s rescue.

The ever-brave Timothee moved with his shield raised to intercept and reclaim the monster’s attention even as his hands trembled.

Dex fired the last of his mana arrows towards Vaguis’s hand, but it was already too late.

Even Priya yelled, telling Timothee the best place to position the shield.

Boom!

The sword-turned-spear was hurled by Vaguis in a moment’s notice.

The projectile tore through the cathedral with a deafening boom straight towards the rest of the party.

As for Xavier...

Well...

He wore the mask he’d honed for six years.

He was Hunter X.

And just as quickly as he disappeared... He reappeared.

Bang!

A wisp of blue smoke curled from his fingertip.

There was no cast lag nor any incantation and absolutely no warning.

His Mana Bullet crossed the cathedral from a spot Vaguis didn’t see coming.

The mana bullet struck Vaguis between the eyes at the exact moment the sword-turned-spear slammed into Timothee’s shield.

[Critical Hit]

A resounding sonic clap shook the room, sending a shockwave rippling across the cathedral.

Dust and shattered glass swallowed the entire area.

But nothing could hide the notification.
