His blood streamed down and mixed with the sand.
I actually did it
He muttered to himself as his eyes began to close. He could feel his body begin to grow numb.
And then the system sent a notification.
The courtyard of the fortress was now quiet. It wasn’t robbed in the darkness, as it was hours before this encounter. Two bodies lay in their own pool of blood. Some of the blood had already dried up on the courtyard floor, while some had dried up on their skin.
From the path through which the fortress had been broken into, the rays of the sun were able to stretch into the courtyard. From that path, some beings walked in. Their eyes widened as they saw the scene before them.
Their bodies were no different from those who lay on the floor. They had cuts and bruises. With blood here and there smeared on them.
As they came, they approached the bodies, checking to see if they had survived or not.
"He seems to be alive," Renjiro said as he checked for a pulse on Zuberi’s neck.
Renjiro and Baozhai now turned to look at Dan. A demigod walked towards Dan’s body to check if he had a pulse, too. When the demigod noticed Dan had a pulse to he nodded towards Renjiro and Baozhai.
"Should we take him?" Renjiro asked as he turned to look at Baozhai.
"He survived, didn’t he? he also acted as our decoy. Helping him is the least we could do," Baozhai said as he replied to Renjiro.
Baozhai then pointed towards Dan’s body, which was carried by two other demigods.
Dan and Zuberi were then taken out of the courtyard. They were taken back to the demigod camp and were being nursed back to health.
After some days, though Dan was still knocked out cold, he was now out of danger. So, he was taken to a tent of his own and left to rest.
****Baozhai’s tent
The tent is not as crowded as it was the last time Dan was here. Only a few beings were here. They were Renjiro and Sigrid with Baozhai himself.
"Shouldn’t we be wary about him now? he literally survived killing a high-tier demon with Zuberi. And to make matters worse, he’s even recovering faster than Zuberi. Shouldn’t we curb him now?" Renjiro started the conversation.
Baozhai said nothing but remained deep in thought.
"We may never get a chance like this? I have done countless divinations and read his stars, but they never truly tell his future. We need to act fast before he turns into a thorn in our side."
The tent was now riddled with silence.
"But who are we to kill someone the gods haven’t even condemned?" Sigrid spoke.
Renjiro turned to cut Sigrid with a cold gaze.
"This isn’t about valor or bravery, Sigrid. He may be brave and full of valor now, but what if he turns it against us? What then?" Renjiro asked.
"Why should we still let him live? He is of no use to us, and he poses more threat to us now than ever."
He then turned to look at Baozhai.
"You of all people should know of what danger he is to your ascension. He is in cohorts with your brother. Your rival for the god games. If let to blossom, he would turn to your half-brother’s right-hand man and bring all those that stand in your brother’s way down"
Baozhai then closed his eyes, and his fist tightened. Taking a deep breath, he then opened his eyes.
"As of now, he isn’t much of a threat, nor has he done anything wrong, and so I won’t condemn him to death, at least not yet. And so he would be left to live."
Hearing those words, Renjiro’s face started to turn red. But as fast as it had turned red, so did it turn back to normal.
"I’ll be taking my leave," Renjiro said as he stepped out of the tent.
Both Baozhai and Sigrid watched him leave.
"You know this isn’t the end of it all?"
"I know," came the reply from Baozhai. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮
"Renjiro won’t let this go and might even want to kill him."
"I know," he said as he leaned back into his seat, with his eyes closed.
"So what are we to do?"
"Protect him," came a flat reply.
Sigrid then stood up to take her leave.
"Sigrid" Baozhai called out to her.
"Be careful how badly you fall. Some tunnels may be too deep for one to be pulled out of, and so they may just have to be buried in it."
Hearing those words, Sigrid’s eyes widened before she nodded and exited the tent.
In Dan’s tent, it’s quiet. Though the scorching rays of the sun didn’t touch him. That didn’t mean his skin didn’t burn from the heat. He was sweating as he lay on the bed.
His face still had marks here and there. It was also stained with dried blood. His body was twitching. His face also tightened and turned dark.
Within his mind, he was reading the notification the system had sent to him.
Quest: Escape the fortress and meet up with the other demigods
Reward: 20 divine embers(completed)
Bonus quest: Kill the higher-tier demon (completed)
Reward: 50 divine embers (completed)
Host evolution is beginning.
The host should choose a path to evolve into:
Zenko: A messenger of the goddess. 30% more resistance to illusion and manipulation skills.
Nogitsune: A wild fox which has no association with the heavens. Manipulation and illusion skills are unlocked. And are executed more easily.
Dan looked at the screen, contemplating which path to choose.
If I were to choose the zenko, I would still be bound to the goddess and would have to do her bidding. Losing any hope of freedom.
On the other hand, the nogitsune path offers freedom but at a cost. I will lose all ties and help from the goddess. Not like she ever helped before, though.
Which path to choose?
Dan’s mind ran laps on which path he was to choose.
And then Dan chose a path.
The system then sent a notification to Dan.
Evolution beginning.
