###Chapter 90: I Like the Sound of It
The air seemed to freeze for half a second.
The last bit of cake on Maxine Rhodes’s fork fell back onto the plate with a soft PLOP.
She looked up, her gaze crashing into his deep, smiling eyes. Her mind went blank, then was immediately flooded with images from the past several nights—fiery, chaotic, and utterly blush-inducing scenes.
She belatedly realized that they had, in fact, used the last one this morning.
But they were going through them way too fast!!
"You..." She opened her mouth, but found herself at a loss for words.
Ethan Hawthorne continued on his own, "The clerk recommended another kind to me today. Said it’s a new product, upgraded for better breathability and thinness."
He paused, his eyes lifting to lock onto hers.
"I just don’t know how well it actually performs. Care to try it out later?"
Maxine felt her body flush under his gaze. She avoided his eyes and reached for her glass of water, wanting to take a sip to cool down, only to find her fingertips had gone soft.
"Ethan Hawthorne," she said, her voice a little hoarse and carrying a faint tremor she didn’t even notice herself. "You... How can you..."
"How can I what?" he pressed, calm and collected, leaning closer until they could almost feel the heat of each other’s breath.
Maxine looked up and met his smiling eyes. The light in them sent her heart into a flutter, yet strangely, she no longer wanted to run.
She suddenly gave up the struggle and mumbled under her breath, a hint of playful reproach in her tone, "Then why did you buy a small cake? Don’t you know... it’s very draining?"
Ethan froze for a second, then broke into a delighted smile.
He reached out, scooped her up from the sofa, and pulled her into his arms.
"You’re right," he whispered into her crimson ear, his breath hot against her skin. "So... the strawberries are for vitamins, and the cream is for energy."
He paused to kiss her heated earlobe, his voice growing huskier, laced with deadly temptation. "And now it’s time to test the new equipment and see what its endurance is really like."
Before she had any time to react, he swept her up and strode steadily toward the bedroom.
"Ethan Hawthorne, you..."
The rest of her protest was swallowed by the soft give of the mattress.
He leaned over and laid her down but didn’t immediately press down on her. Instead, he knelt on one knee by the bedside and slowly, deliberately, began to unbutton his shirt.
The bedroom was lit only by a single, dim, intimate lamp on the bedside table. The light traced the smooth lines of his shoulders and the contours of his chest, and his movements carried a deliberate ease.
Maxine lay back on the soft pillows, watching him, her heart pounding like a drum.
They had done far more intimate things countless times, but whenever he prepared like this—with such clear purpose and effortless confidence—she was still overwhelmed by his powerful presence and sense of control, leaving her flustered.
"Weren’t you quite the talker just a moment ago?"
He undid the third button, revealing his sharp collarbones. His gaze remained locked on her, a smile that sent her heart racing playing on his lips. "Hm?"
Maxine turned her head away, the back of her ears burning. "You heard wrong."
"Is that so?"
He chuckled, finally taking off his shirt completely and tossing it onto the carpet. Then he leaned in, planting his hands on either side of her head and casting her completely in his shadow.
His eyes slowly traced her brows, her eyes, the tip of her nose, and finally lingered on her lips, which were pressed together slightly in nervousness.
"Nervous?" he asked in a low, impossibly hoarse voice. "Afraid the new ones... won’t work well?"
Maxine shivered at his blunt and indecent question. She couldn’t help but raise a leg to kick him, but he anticipated it and pinned her down.
"Don’t be hasty."
He chuckled, slowly lowering his head to finally kiss her.
The kiss was gentle, slow... It sent her mind reeling, and she unconsciously parted her lips.
He took the opportunity to deepen the kiss, his hand sliding from her cheek down over her thin nightgown to cup the softness of her breast, kneading it gently.
A soft whimper escaped Maxine’s throat as her body went limp.
When the kiss ended, Ethan’s breath was hot, his eyes holding a bottomless abyss of desire.
He pulled back slightly, reached into the bedside table drawer for the new box, and the faint sound of tearing plastic was startlingly clear in the quiet bedroom.
Soon, Ethan was over her again, kissing her earlobe, her neck, trailing down the delicate skin of her body...
His low, magnetic voice mingled with the kisses, one dirty phrase after another coming so fast and hard that Maxine was completely overwhelmed.
"The clerk said this one is ultra-thin... Here, feel it. Is it true you can barely feel it?"
"Do you like the way it feels? Hm? Better than the last one?"
"Cry out... I like the sound of it."
Maxine’s consciousness drifted in and out. All she could do was grip his bulging biceps and the wrinkled silk sheets.
Just when she thought she was about to reach the edge, Ethan suddenly slowed his rhythm, tormenting her with an almost cruel patience, grinding and rubbing against her.
He leaned down, his scorching lips pressing against the shell of her sweaty ear. His hot breath filled her senses as he whispered in a raspy, coaxing voice, "Maxi..."
He kissed her earlobe, giving it a gentle suck, and felt her body tremble violently. "Call me ’hubby’..."
Maxine shuddered, her eyes meeting his, shimmering and full of unshed tears.
"Are you going to say it or not?"
"I... I won’t..."
"Hm?"
"Ah, don’t... Hub... Hubby..."
Maxine was forced to compromise in the end. Her soft, weak cry of "hubby" sent the man’s adrenaline soaring.
...
An unknown amount of time passed before the storm gradually subsided.
Maxine was utterly spent, her face flushed as she panted with her mouth slightly open. She gave the man still lying on top of her a gentle push. "I’m going to go wash up."
But Ethan simply tightened his arms, effortlessly pulling her back under him as she tried to slip away.
He lowered his head and kissed her sweaty forehead, his voice lazy. "I never said... we were finished."
Maxine’s eyes flew open. "Again?"
Hearing this, Ethan let out a low chuckle. "We’ll talk after we’ve used them all."
’What??!!’
’Those boxes must have at least a dozen in them, right?!’
But her shock didn’t last long before the man was robbing her of her senses and her breath all over again.
...
They battled from night until day.
And again from day until night.
That weekend, Maxine Rhodes didn’t get the chance to take a single step out the door.
She did nothing but eat and sleep.
And he still loved to leave his mark on every corner of the room with her.
「Monday morning.」
Maxine felt as if her body, which had only just recently recovered, had been taken apart and put back together again, leaving her sore and weak.
’That man simply had no idea how to spell the word ’restraint’!’
She propped herself up and saw that the other side of the bed was already empty.
