It wasn’t effective because of Jake’s level, and if Jake were above Class I, then he would have easily been able to kill the king.

It drove a dagger toward Jake’s exposed throat.

Jake released his sword and used Shadow Step at point-blank range, the technique ripping him away from the king’s grip with a violence that left his arm screaming in protest.

He materialized across the chamber near one of his shadow serpents and immediately manifested three more, pushing past the energy cost, past the exhaustion, channeling everything he had into creating enough threats that the King would have to divide his attention.

The serpent constructs attacked in a coordinated swarm while Jake retrieved his fallen sword and activated every ability he still had available.

Scale Armor was failing; the protection cracked in multiple places, but he poured more energy into it and watched the scales reform, knowing it was eating through reserves he couldn’t afford to spend but also knowing that without it the next hit would kill him.

The fight became a desperate cycle of attack and retreat, Jake using Shadow Step to stay mobile while his serpents harried the King and the remaining Ghoul Lords.

He killed two more Champions with Venomous Strike, the toxin working on lesser undead even if it did nothing to the King itself. His shadow serpents died and were remade, each manifestation costing more as his energy reserves bottomed out.

A Ghoul Lord’s sword caught him across the left thigh, cutting deep, and Jake’s leg buckled under him.

He went down on one knee and barely got his blade up in time to block the follow-up strike that would have split his skull.

The impact drove him flat to the floor and the Lord raised its weapon for a killing blow that Jake couldn’t avoid.

One of his shadow serpents took the strike instead, the Lord’s blade passing through its body and buying Jake the second he needed to roll away and come up stabbing. His sword found the Lord’s throat and Venomous Strike finished what the blade started, dropping the elite variant into a convulsing heap.

Jake staggered upright, his left leg barely supporting his weight, blood soaking through his torn trousers. His vision was narrowing at the edges, exhaustion and blood loss combining into a fog he had to consciously fight through with each breath.

The Ghoul King stood in the chamber’s center, surrounded by the bodies of its own minions that Jake’s serpents had brought down during the chaos, and it looked at Jake with something that might have been respect in eyes that had known only malevolence for centuries.

"You are strong," the King said.

"Stronger than most who challenge me. But strength is not enough when it is spent too freely."

It charged again, and Jake met it with everything he had left.

The final exchange lasted thirty seconds that felt like hours.

Jake used Shadow Step three more times, each jump shorter than the last as his power guttered. His sword met the King’s daggers in a flurry of strikes that his training guided even as his conscious mind began losing coherence.

His shadow serpents attacked from every angle and were destroyed one by one until only Jake remained, alone in the chamber with a creature that had survived centuries by being unkillable.

The Ghoul King’s dagger found Jake’s left shoulder and sank deep, the bone blade grating against his clavicle.

AAAAAGRRRR!!!!

Jake screamed and twisted, using the momentum to drive his own sword up under the king’s ribs at an angle that should have found the heart if ghouls still possessed functional organs.

The king staggered backward with Jake’s sword lodged in his chest, black ichor pouring from the wound, and for a moment both combatants stood swaying in the torchlight, each waiting to see who would fall first.

Jake’s legs gave out.

He hit the floor hard, his vision going dark at the edges, pain radiating from a dozen wounds that his body couldn’t process individually anymore because they’d all merged into one overwhelming signal of damage.

The Ghoul King pulled Jake’s sword from its chest with a wet sound and examined the blade with something like curiosity.

"A good weapon," it said.

"I will keep it as a trophy."

It raised the sword for a killing strike.

Jake’s right hand moved on pure instinct, reaching out toward the shadows pooling under the king’s feet, and he pulled with everything he had left, with the absolute bottom of his power reserves, with the desperate final push of someone who refused to die on a dungeon floor when he had his women waiting and a goddess’s expectations, and Raani waiting outside.

The shadows responded.

They erupted upward in a column of pure darkness that wrapped around the Ghoul King like chains, binding its arms, its legs, and its torso, constricting with force that came from Jake’s bloodline rather than any technique the system had taught him.

The king struggled against the binding, its strength enormous, but Jake held on and poured everything he had into keeping those shadow chains tight for just a few more seconds.

Long enough for what came next.

The shadows began to move differently, no longer just binding but forming, and Jake watched through dimming vision as they took shape around the king’s body, serpentine forms appearing from the darkness with scales and fangs and eyes that glowed with his own power reflected back.

Shadow serpents. Dozens of them. All manifesting simultaneously from the massive concentration of darkness he’d created, each one drawing from the same desperate reservoir that was keeping Jake conscious.

They struck as one.

Fangs found every gap in the King’s defense, venom flooding into undead flesh from a hundred different wounds, and this time it worked because it wasn’t just serpent toxin but shadow venom, corruption fighting corruption, Jake’s bloodline power attacking the necrotic energy that sustained the King’s existence.

The Ghoul King screamed, a sound of genuine agony that echoed through the chamber and shook dust from the ceiling, and the shadow serpents didn’t stop, didn’t relent, and kept striking and injecting and consuming until the King’s struggles weakened and its screams died and its body began to dissolve into black smoke.

Jake lay on the chamber floor and watched the Ghoul King finish dissolving; watched his sword clatter to the stone as the body holding it turned to smoke; watched the shadow serpents fade now that their purpose was complete.

He tried to move and discovered his body had stopped taking instructions. The pain that had been overwhelming seconds ago was fading into numbness, which he understood with detached clarity was a very bad sign.

Blood pooled beneath him, spreading across the polished black stone in patterns that caught the green torchlight.

His vision was narrowing to a tunnel.

The system was saying something about critical damage and emergency protocols, but Jake couldn’t focus enough to read the notifications that kept appearing and disappearing in his dimming sight.

He thought about Raani waiting outside with Syrath, about Chelsea sleeping in Raaya Villa, and about thirty-six half-siblings who would probably be relieved he’d died before the contest even began.

He thought about Asurani’s amused smile and her instructions to get stronger.

He had gotten stronger.

He’d cleared an A-rank dungeon solo at Class II.

He’d killed an A-rank boss with nothing but bloodline abilities and determination.

And he was going to bleed out on the floor before anyone found him because he’d insisted on going alone.

The irony was sharp enough to cut even through the numbness.

Jake’s eyes closed.

The last thing he saw before darkness took him completely was a notification trying to resolve itself in his fading vision.
