Jake stood among the bodies of the black orcs and tried to catch his breath.

The fight had been brutal but manageable. The orcs had been strong and numerous but they were below his level. He could feel it clearly now after the awakening. The difference in power between him and creatures that would have terrified him a week ago. His new strength had made the fight almost easy once he stopped thinking and just moved.

The bloodline was still singing in his veins. Still warm and present. Making him stronger than most people he would encounter. The system had told him that. Class II with Raikarndel blood was a significant advantage.

He was starting to understand what that meant in practice.

Raani was organizing the cleanup. The Dragon Maidens were moving bodies off the road. The iron-suited soldiers were checking their wounded and preparing to continue the journey.

Jake was about to suggest they move quickly when he felt it.

The sudden invisible onslaught of immense pressure—that was what he would call it but he wasn’t sure because it was completely different.

It came from nowhere and everywhere at once. It wasn’t a physical thing or something he could see or touch. But present. Heavy and oppressive. Like the air itself had decided to press down on everything with focused intent.

Jake’s blood sense triggered immediately.

The system couldn’t measure it. That alone told Jake everything he needed to know.

Whatever was coming was so far above his current level that the system couldn’t give him useful information about it.

The Dragon Maidens felt it too. They all stopped what they were doing. Turned toward the road ahead. Weapons coming up. Faces going alert and tense.

Raani went pale, the color drained from her face in a way that Jake had never seen before. Not during the fight with the robed attackers. Even when the black orcs had appeared.

This was different.

This was fear.

The group came into view down the road.

Ten riders. Maybe twelve. They moved in formation with military precision. But it wasn’t the riders that drew Jake’s attention.

It was the creature at the center.

A white tiger.

Massive. Easily the size of a horse. Pure white fur with black stripes that seemed to move across its body like living shadows. Its eyes were yellow and bright and filled with an intelligence that made Jake’s skin crawl. Its paws made no sound on the packed dirt road despite its size.

The man riding it was something else entirely.

He sat on the tiger’s back with perfect ease. No saddle. No reins. Just sitting there like he and the creature were one thing rather than two. He was young. Maybe mid-twenties. Dark hair tied back. Handsome features that were arranged in a calm, pleasant expression. He wore simple traveling clothes in dark colors. No armor. No obvious weapons.

And from the look of it, he looked like a simple man, nothing out of ordinary.

The pressure was coming from him.

Jake could feel it now. Focused, directed. The man wasn’t doing anything visible. He was just existing. And his existence was pressing down on everything around him with a weight that made the air feel thick.

Raani took a step backward.

Her hand was on her blade but she wasn’t drawing it. She looked like she wanted to run. Like every instinct in her body was telling her to get as far away from this person as possible.

Jake had never seen her look like that.

"Raani," he said quietly. "Do you know who that is?"

Raani opened her mouth. Closed it. Tried again.

"That’s—" she started.

Maudlina appeared beside Jake.

Her face was stern. She looked at the approaching riders and then at Jake with an expression that was doing something complicated between warning and sympathy.

"Jake," she said. Her voice was low and controlled.

"That man is your half-brother."

Jake’s head snapped toward her.

"WHAT?!!"

"Your father had other children," Maudlina said quickly.

"To be precise, he had many like you."

"Before you. One of them is Karut. He’s been the acting heir of Clan Raikarndel since your father left."

Jake stared at her.

Then he looked back at the man on the white tiger.

Half-brother.

The word sat in his chest like something heavy and jagged. These people were revealing information about him like trailers of a movie. And it seemed like a perfect plot twist for him.

Now he was sure why his father would just leave like that, leaving behind a child. He might have not even cared about him.

The riders stopped twenty meters away.

The man on the white tiger looked at Jake.

His face was pleasant and calm. There was no hostility in his expression. No obvious threat. Just a quiet, focused attention directed entirely at Jake with the kind of intensity that made it feel like being observed by something that saw too much.

He smiled.

It was a nice smile. Warm and genuine-looking. The kind of smile that would put most people at ease.

It made Jake’s blood run cold.

"Brother," the man said.

His voice was quiet. Controlled. Each word measured and placed with care. There was no particular emotion in it. Just a statement. Acknowledgment.

He dismounted from the white tiger in one smooth motion. The tiger settled into a sitting position and watched everything with those bright yellow eyes.

The man walked toward Jake with his hands visible and empty. Non-threatening.

He stopped five meters away.

"I am Karut," he said.

"I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you."

Jake didn’t move.

Every instinct he had was screaming at him. The system was pulsing warnings in the background. The blood-sense was registering danger at levels it had never registered before.

But Karut just stood there with a serene expression on his face.

Waiting.

"I’m happy you’ve finally been found," Karut continued. His smile didn’t change.

"And brought home to where you belong."

He turned slightly toward Raani.

"Thank you, Raani," he said.

"For bringing him back safely. The journey must have been difficult."
