- Chapter 1. Prologue
Kim Do-Joon and Siwelin went inside the car parked in the basement. He buckled his seatbelt, while Siwelin got into the passenger seat.
Tap, tap.
Siwelin nudged Kim Do-Joon. She followed him without question, so she had no idea what was going on.
"It seems like Ms. Da-Jung saw So-Eun taking out the sacred relic. She mistook it for an Awakening," Kim Do-Joon explained.
Siwelin blinked, widening her eyes in shock.
"Why do you look so surprised?" Kim Do-Joon asked.
— I never taught her how to take it out though.
"I thought you just had to draw a circle in the air to get it?"
Kim Do-Joon distinctly remembered Siwelin retrieving the mirror that way before. She had even helped Kim So-Eun do it by holding her hand and guiding her.
However, Siwelin shook her head vigorously.
— That's impossible! To handle it, the individual needs to understand the divine power within themselves!
"Are you serious?" Kim Do-Joon asked.
— Yes, I am.
Kim Do-Joon became stern.
"In other words... my daughter is a genius?”
Kim Do-Joon spoke with all seriousness, praising his daughter like any parent.
If anyone else were there, they might have scoffed, but Siwelin nodded earnestly. While Kim Do-Joon was away in the labyrinth, she frequently visited Kim So-Eun. With no one to dissuade them, the two doting individuals fed each other’s delusions. The catch was, it was not just a delusion.
"Let's just go first," Kim Do-Joon said.
Siwelin fastened her seatbelt. Kim Do-Joon started the car, shifting into gear.
When Siwelin and Kim Do-Joon arrived at the hospital, they found Jung Da-Jung waiting for them.
"Congratulations!"
She greeted them with the same excitement as on the phone. Awakening was akin to winning the lottery these days. Had it been a real Awakening, it’d have called for a celebration, indeed.
"Ah, yes. Thank you."
Unable to tell the truth, Kim Do-Joon responded awkwardly. To Jung Da-Jung, it looked like Kim Do-Joon was still coming to terms with the sudden news. Of course, that wasn’t the case.
I didn't intend for her to seem like an Awakener though...
Leaving aside the fact that it wasn’t real, unless Kim So-Eun wanted to become a Hunter, there wouldn’t be any special aids. If anything, she’d only attract unwanted attention.
Besides, young Awakeners weren’t allowed to attend regular schools or kindergartens due to the risk of their powers going out of control and harming others. Although rare, such incidents caused enough concern to flood schools with complaints.
I guess I have no choice, given the situation.
Even if Kim So-Eun could not attend a regular school, she could still go to the affiliated kindergarten or elementary school at the academy. While they might be more expensive, the price was doable for him now. Moreover, these facilities came with the perk of having a far superior security and safety compared to regular educational facilities.
When they reached the hospital room, they saw Kim So-Eun sitting on the bed.
"Daddy! Unni!"
Kim So-Eun ran to Kim Do-Joon, who bent down to pick her up as always.
"My little So-Eun, did you have a nice day?" Kim Do-Joon asked.
"Yes, Daddy!"
Kim So-Eun nodded energetically, making Kim Do-Joon smile. Then, he checked her condition. Her complexion was good. Her eyes were bright, and she showed no signs of coughing. If not for the patient gown, no one would think she was ill.
"Ms. Da-Jung, can I see the doctor right now?" Kim Do-Joon asked.
"Yes, the doctor told me to bring you. Please follow me,” Jung Da-Jung replied.
Then, Kim Do-Joon spoke to Kim So-Eun.
"So-Eun, Daddy is going to talk to the doctor about your discharge. Can you play with Siwelin for a bit?"
"What? I can leave the hospital? I’m finally going back to Daddy's house?" Kim So-Eun asked.
"It’s not Daddy's house. It’s our house," Kim Do-Joon corrected her.
"Yay!"
Kim So-Eun joyfully nuzzled her head against Kim Do-Joon's chest. With a tender expression, he gently patted her head, before handing her over to Siwelin. Afterward, he followed Jung Da-Jung out of the room.
"After assessing So-Eun’s condition, we are pleased to confirm that she is stable and ready for discharge. The necessary procedures are complete. As for the remaining paperwork, Nurse Jung will provide the detailed information," Dr. Kwon Sung-Joo said.
"Great! Thank you," Kim Do-Joon replied.
"Today, I want to discuss So-Eun's outpatient care. As mentioned, you'll need to bring her to the hospital regularly for follow-up visits.”
Although they’d have to visit the hospital regularly, it was still a significant improvement. In the past, they couldn’t even hope for her to be discharged. After discussing the future treatment plan and precautions in detail, Kim Do-Joon left the consultation room.
Next, he had to talk with Nurse Jung Da-Jung about the discharge procedures, which mainly involved financial arrangements. With ample funds, Kim Do-Joon handled everything on the spot.
Returning to the hospital room, he found Kim So-Eun and Siwelin excitedly packing.
"Lalala, lalala."
Kim So-Eun hummed a familiar tune from a TV show, diligently moving her things. She placed her dolls, storybooks, and clothes into a large suitcase, while Siwelin neatly organized everything.
"She seems happy to be living with Daddy," Dr. Kwon Sung-Joo said.
"Oh, Doctor?"
Kim Do-Joon turned to see Dr. Kwon Sung-Joo and Jung Da-Jung.
"Hello, Doctor!" Kim So-Eun greeted them.
"Hey there, So-Eun. You must be excited to go home," the doctor said.
"Yes, I am!"
Dr. Kwon put on a deliberately sad expression and said, "But I'm going to miss you... Thinking about saying goodbye makes me sad."
"Huh?"
"I’m also sad that I won't be able to see you anymore," Jung Da-Jung chimed in, as if on cue.
Seeing them, Kim So-Eun's expression started to twist, her tears welling up. She was so excited to go home that she didn’t realize she’d be leaving her hospital family behind.
"Oh... uhm... can't she and the doctor also come home with me?" Kim So-Eun asked.
"Well, I have my own house to return to," Dr. Kwon Sung-Joo said with a big smile.
"I’m engaged, so living with a man with a child is a bit..." Jung Da-Jung joked, saying something that Kim So-Eun wouldn't understand.
However, understanding that their response was a "no," Kim So-Eun started to cry.
"Waaah! Hic, I don't want to leave Unni and the doctor!"
After spending years with them, It was natural for Kim So-Eun to be upset. Jung Da-Jung hugged Kim So-Eun, patting her back, showing her skill in comforting children.
"There, there. You’ll have to come to the hospital tomorrow and the day after, right? We'll be able to see each other again.”
"Really?" Kim So-Eun asked.
"Of course. When I have time, I’ll come visit your house. Pinky promise?”
"Okay... Promise me."
Calming down, Kim So-Eun hooked her little finger with Jung Da-Jung's. Siwelin took Kim So-Eun, wiping her tear-stained face with a wet wipe. Watching them, Kim Do-Joon turned to Dr. Kwon and Jung Da-Jung.
"Thank you for everything," Kim Do-Joon said sincerely, bowing.
Dr. Kwon had treated Kim So-Eun to the best of his ability. Jung Da-Jung had filled the roles of both a mother and a friend, which Kim So-Eun lacked. The father and daughter had received an immeasurable amount of kindness.
"Why are you doing this, Sir? It's not like we're saying goodbye forever," Dr. Kwon said, trying to lighten the mood.
"I'll be embarrassed to see you tomorrow," Jung Da-Jung said.
"Even so, I wanted to express my gratitude. Just because we'll see each other tomorrow doesn't mean this feeling of appreciation will fade," Kim Do-Joon insisted.
"Oh, you're such a smooth talker," Jung Da-Jeong said.
Dr. Kwon Sung-Joo scratched his cheek awkwardly, while Jung Da-Jung smiled. After saying their goodbyes once more, Kim Do-Joon and his family left the hospital. The room was quiet and strangely empty, with only the disheveled bed sheets remaining.
"They're gone," Dr. Kwon said.
"Yes, they are," Jung Da-Jung murmured, looking a bit forlorn.
The wind blew through the open window, making the curtains flutter gently. After the two had left, the room felt colder than usual.
"Come on, Nurse Jung. Let’s stop moping around and get back to work," Dr. Kwon said, snapping out of his melancholy.
"Yes, Doctor.”
Soon after, Dr. Kwon Sung-Joo left the room. Jung Da-Jung, left alone, began tidying things up.
***
"Should we grab something to eat before heading home?" Kim Do-Joon suggested from the driver's seat.
Kim So-Eun was now in the passenger seat, while Siwelin sat in the back.
"Hmm... I want something sweet," Kim So-Eun replied.
"Something sweet?" Kim Do-Joon asked.
Then, from the back seat, a card suddenly appeared in front of Kim Do-Joon. He took it and read it.
— Let's go for bingsoo!
It was a request from Siwelin. The handwriting was especially pretty, suggesting her earnest desire.
"How about bingsoo?” Kim Do-Joon asked.
"I love bingsoo!" Kim So-Eun replied.
Seeing that Kim So-Eun was on board, Kim Do-Joon drove them to a nearby dessert shop.
That day, they ended up ordering three servings of bingsoo: two for Siwelin and one for Kim Do-Joon and Kim So-Eun to share. After enjoying their treats, they took a walk around the neighborhood before heading home.
"Wow... It's home! I’m home!" Kim So-Eun exclaimed, bouncing around as Kim Do-Joon carried the luggage to the room.
Originally, Kim Do-Joon had used the single room, but now it was occupied by Siwelin. Kim Do-Joon slept in the living room, which doubled as the kitchen.
"You can sleep here with Unni," Kim Do-Joon said.
"I’m in the same room as Unni?" Kim So-Eun asked.
"Yes, why? You don’t want to?”
"No! I want to sleep with her!” Kim So-Eun profusely shook her head, obviously disliking the idea of sleeping alone.
After unpacking everything, he set out the bedding he’d prepared for this day. Finally, the place felt more like a home, with the only issue being the limited space. This room, originally intended to be an add-on to the shop, was too small for three people.
I will have to find a new place around here soon.
The house had been fine when Kim Do-Joon lived alone, and even with Siwelin, there was no urgent need to move. But now, with Kim So-Eun, a proper home was essential.
Meanwhile, Kim So-Eun ran around, exploring every nook and cranny. She even ventured outside, running around the neighborhood, with Siwelin following closely behind.
Later that night, Kim So-Eun asked Kim Do-Joon.
"Daddy, sleep with us! Sleeping alone isn’t good!”
"Huh?"
Somehow, the three of them ended up huddling next to each other. Kim So-Eun, thrilled to have company at night, chattered away. First, she spoke to Kim Do-Joon, then to Siwelin, and back again. Eventually, her eyelids grew heavy, and she started to drift off. Within the darkness, Kim Do-Joon could barely make out Siwelin tucking Kim So-Eun in, while gently patting her. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
Kim Do-Joon felt strange. His life had changed so much. He used to fall asleep alone in this shop, staring at the dark ceiling every night. But now, he was not alone.
The room, once spacious enough for one, was now crowded. However, the crampedness didn’t bother him. Feeling unusually sentimental in the late hours, Kim Do-Joon closed his eyes.
But still... I’ll need to find a new house...
Kim Do-Joon reminded himself, never losing sight of practicality.
***
The sun had risen, marking the beginning of a new day. Today, Kim Do-Joon had an important task to accomplish. He had to register Kim So-Eun as an Awakener.
"So-Eun, about that mirror," Kim Do-Joon began.
"Huh? This one?" Kim So-Eun responded.
"How did you manage to bring it out?" Kim Do-Joon asked curiously.
Kim So-Eun contemplatively tilted her head, before replying. "Um... I just did?”
"Oh, really? I see," Kim Do-Joon nodded, understanding the situation.
It was a common phrase among geniuses—they just did.
"Siwel... Si-Ah, we’ll be going to the association for a bit. Please take care of the shop," Kim Do-Joon said.
"Unni, see you later!" Kim So-Eun waved.
— Have a safe trip.
Upon arriving at the association building with Kim So-Eun, the first thing Kim Do-Joon did was look for Lee Ji-Ah. Unfortunately, she was out on a task.
Registering an Awakener shouldn’t be too difficult, anyway.
Registering as an Awakener was simpler than obtaining a Hunter license, which required extensive testing. They only had to demonstrate the skill.
"Please wait here," a staff member directed them to a waiting room.
Inside, a few others were present as well.
"When you go in, just show the man how you take out the mirror. Do you think you can do it?" Kim Do-Joon asked.
"Yes!" Kim So-Eun nodded confidently.
"When we're done, let’s have something to eat. We'll get something for Si-Ah, too," Kim Do-Joon added.
"Yay!" Kim So-Eun cheered, her legs swinging as she thought about what to eat.
Kim Do-Joon smiled at her cuteness, waiting patiently for their turn. Then, a nearby middle-aged woman struck up a conversation.
"Oh, is your daughter here for her Awakening, too?" she asked.
She wore heavy makeup, and beside her was a boy around Kim So-Eun's age, burying his face in her arms.
"Yes, she is," Kim Do-Joon replied, nodding.
Was the woman there for the same reason?
"How wonderful. By the way, what's your profession?" she inquired.
"I'm a Hunter," Kim Do-Joon answered.
"Oh, I see! No wonder you seem different. My husband is a Hunter too. You might be around the same age. Perhaps you two are colleagues?" the woman asked.
"I doubt it. I only got my license last quarter," Kim Do-Joon clarified.
"Ah, I see," the woman briefly seemed disdainful, but she quickly masked it. "I see. Well, good luck."
The woman lost interest and turned back to her child. After that, she didn’t talk to Kim Do-Joon at all. Then, she whispered something to her son, which Kim Do-Joon heard due to his heightened senses.
She told her child to pass high school exams to avoid ending up like Kim Do-Joon.
"Next is Park Se-Ho and guardian, please come in," called a staff member.
"Oh, that's us. Come on, Se-Ho. Let’s go in," the woman said, leading her son into the examination room.
“Okay,” Park Se-Ho replied.
They got up and walked toward the examination room. She glanced at Kim Do-Joon one last time before entering.
"Daddy, I want ice cream!" Kim So-Eun tugged at Kim Do-Joon's sleeve.
"Didn't you have a lot of bingsoo yesterday? You still want to eat ice cream?" Kim Do-Joon asked.
"Ice cream and shaved ice are different!" Kim So-Eun replied.
"Alright, let’s get some on our way home," Kim Do-Joon agreed.
— Oh my! You are doing so great, my son!
A loud voice came from the examination room. Even without enhanced senses, he could hear the woman clearly due to how loud she was.
It seemed like the boy, Park Se-Ho, was handling his abilities well. Newly Awakened children often struggled with controlling their powers, sometimes delaying their registration.
Then, suddenly, a cry echoed from inside.
— Aaah!
— Se-Ho! Oh my god, someone help! Where's the medical team!?
The room became chaotic, and the door swung open. Everyone in the waiting room turned their attention toward the noise. Through the open door, they saw Park Se-Ho with severe burns on his arm, crying in pain. He had lost control of his skill.
Usually, children didn’t have enough power to cause such a situation, but it seemed like he Awakened with quite a powerful skill.
"Is there no medical team? Please come quickly! Hurry!"
The woman was in a panic, calling for help. A nearby association staff member, who stood in wait, hurriedly left. They were expected to arrive in less than a minute.
However, at that moment, Kim So-Eun suddenly jumped up and rushed over to the crying child. Then, she pulled out the white mirror—the Saintess’ artifact.
"Make the pain go away," Kim So-Eun whispered.
Immediately, a warm energy radiated from Kim So-Eun, spreading throughout the room like a gentle spring day. Park Se-Ho stopped crying. His eyes widened in surprise as the burns on his arm vanished
"It doesn’t hurt anymore, right?" Kim So-Eun asked.
"No, it doesn't! Thank you, Noona!" Park Se-Ho replied gratefully.
The entire room was filled with a comforting warmth. Everyone, including the examiner and the frantic mother, was left speechless by the miraculous sight.
