[The additional reward has been granted.]
[Title: The One Who Remembers]
- A name that history has forgotten has been recorded once more.
[With this new title, you have acquired the skill Hero's Return.]
[Hero's Return]
- Collected Names: 1
- Saintess of Sacrifice Siwelin
[Call upon them.]
[Those whose names have been remembered will gladly join you.]
Huh?
Kim Do-Joon blinked in disbelief. He never expected a reward like this.
Join me? Does that mean I can summon them?
Skeptical but curious, Kim Do-Joon called out her name. “Siwelin.”
He suddenly felt a strange sensation stirring in his chest. It was akin to mana, but not quite the same. This strange force soon left his body and began swirling around his store.
As Kim Do-Joon watched in astonishment, the whirlwind of energy started to glow and coalesce into a figure. The woman who had turned to dust before his eyes reappeared in front of him.
Bewildered, Kim Do-Joon asked, “Weren’t you supposed to be at peace?”
Siwelin awkwardly smiled at the stunned Kim Do-Joon, who had thought he would never see her again. Just like when he last saw her, a white lily bloomed where her right eye would be. However, pristine white robes embroidered with gold threads had replaced her tattered clothes, and her previously white hair was now a lustrous black.
So I have a summoning skill now?
Kim Do-Joon frowned, lost in thought. He had heard of summoners who could call forth spiritual beasts and spirits, some of whom had even become famous Hunters.
However, he had never heard of a skill that summoned a person. Was she a person now? Was she still a ghoul? If she was, would that make him a necromancer?
No, she seemed too human to be a ghoul. Even the flower growing from her missing right eye just looked like an eye patch with a flower on it. He racked his brain for answers, but he failed to come up with any. There was too little information.
“What exactly is going on?” Kim Do-Joon muttered in frustration.
Watching Siwelin just stare at him silently, he finally remembered her condition before she disappeared last time. She had not spoken then either.
On a hunch, Kim Do-Joon asked the Saintess, “Can you speak?”
Instead of giving a verbal response, Siwelin just shook her head. Other than her hair color, she seemed unchanged from before she had turned to ashes. Since she could not speak, Kim Do-Joon decided to ask some yes-or-no questions.
“I recently acquired a new title. Do you know anything about the title, The One Who Remembers?”
Siwelin shook her head.
“You don’t know either?”
She nodded.
“So you also don’t know why you suddenly appeared?”
Just then, a thought that was not his own crossed Kim Do-Joon’s mind. It was hers.
“You came to repay a favor?” Kim Do-Joon asked.
The Saintess nodded more vigorously this time.
It was a mysterious feeling. Even though she could not speak, he had somehow sensed her thoughts.
I’ve heard summoners say they share a bond with their summons...
Was this a similar phenomenon? Kim Do-Joon was curious, but there was no one to ask because none of the Hunters he knew had a summoning skill.
Hmmm...
Kim Do-Joon decided to review the information he had so far.
First of all, the undead army killed Saintess Siwelin. She was then resurrected as a ghoul, likely due to some curse from the undead army, though he couldn’t seem to remember that part clearly. It was as if his memory of it had been sealed.
After that, a beam of divine power disintegrated her.
So, what was this before him now?
Is she a ghost?
Kim Do-Joon examined her. She was neither transparent nor floating. When he offered her a chair, she sat down just fine instead of phasing through it.
Well, she doesn’t seem like one.
Next, he checked if she was still a ghoul. Kim Do-Joon took out his axe, which had the divine element, from his inventory. Holding it by the axehead, he approached her with the handle extended toward her.
Although Kim Do-Joon did not have its edge facing her, he was still ultimately approaching her with a weapon. Nevertheless, Siwelin just watched, seemingly trusting him completely.
If she were a real ghoul, she would burst into flames as soon as the axe touched her.
Having seen her memories, Kim Do-Joon couldn’t help but feel guilty about what he was planning to do. However, he had to confirm what she was. Hence, he brought the handle close and touched her finger with it.
Hmm... no reaction at all.
This confirmed that she was not a ghoul, at least.
What other clues do I have...
Kim Do-Joon had tried everything he could think of. The only remaining clue was that the skill he was using right now seemed like a summoning skill.
On a whim, Kim Do-Joon pulled out his phone and searched for known summoning skills. However, there was no record of a skill that summoned people, much less one called Hero's Return.
Kim Do-Joon started to think that this skill was another phenomenon unique to him, like his copy-pasting skill or the presence of labyrinths.
Kim Do-Joon sighed and stood up. Needing time to think, he started making two cups of coffee while Siwelin curiously looked around the shop. Once the coffee was ready, he handed her a cup.
“Drink.”
Siwelin gave him a confused look.
“It’s coffee, similar to tea.”
Siwelin nodded and took a sip, grimacing at the bitterness.
Kim Do-Joon chuckled and added some sugar. Satisfied, she drank it with both hands, like a hamster.
...
As they finished the coffee, a calm atmosphere filled the shop. With the bitter taste of the now-finished coffee lingering on his tongue, Kim Do-Joon pondered what to do. Siwelin seemed like a person despite being a summoned entity. Anyone would think so.
That meant she had to adapt to modern society.
However, before doing that, Kim Do-Joon had to do something first.
“Siwelin, let’s step out for a bit.”
Siwelin tilted her head in confusion.
“There’s someone I want you to meet,” Kim Do-Joon said firmly.
***
With Siwelin seated in the passenger seat, Kim Do-Joon drove to the hospital where Kim So-Eun was admitted.
Upon entering the building, Jung Da-Jung greeted them.
"Welcome back, Mr. Do-Joon! And the person beside you is...?"
Her eyes widened as she turned to Siwelin.
Who is she? Jung Da-Jung wondered.
There was no apparent relationship between Siwelin and Kim Do-Joon. They did not look alike, and there was a significant age difference.
Moreover, Siwelin was dressed in a peculiar, pure white robe of a foreign church or cathedral. She also had an ornate eyepatch adorned with a large flower over her right eye.
The outfit did not look bad on Siwelin, but it was eye-catching, to say the least.
"She's my niece," Kim Do-Joon explained. They had agreed to introduce Siwelin this way for convenience.
"Your niece? I thought you said you didn't have any relatives?"
"I do have some, but we lost contact for a while. She just came looking for me a few days ago.”
"Oh, I see..." the nurse trailed off. Sensing a complicated story, she chose not to pry further.
"Anyway, how is So-Eun? Is she awake?"
"No, she just fell asleep. Would you like to see her?"
"Yes, please.”
Nurse Jung Da-Jung nodded. She then escorted them to Kim So-Eun’s room before leaving. Kim Do-Joon carefully opened the door, mindful not to wake her.
Squeak—
Kim So-Eun's soft breathing filled the room. Thankfully, the door’s squeaky hinges had not woken her up; she remained sound asleep, unaware of their presence.
Siwelin tilted her head, silently questioning who Kim So-Eun was.
"She's my daughter."
Siwelin’s eyes widened.
Turning to her, Kim Do-Joon asked, "Do you think you can cure her illness?"
A glimmer of hope filled his voice. In his memories, Siwelin possessed extraordinary abilities. She could heal wounds, neutralize undead poison, and cure diseases. Hence, he hoped that she could help Kim So-Eun too.
After a moment’s hesitation, Siwelin nodded. She gently took Kim So-Eun's hand in hers and closed her eyes. While seemingly in prayer, she then used Blessing of the Nebula, her skill.
Soon, a star-like glow enveloped Kim So-Eun, illuminating the dark room with a mystical light. Kim Do-Joon watched breathlessly as a sacred, pure atmosphere filled the space, reminiscent of the underground chapel a few days ago.
After a short while, Siwelin finished her prayer and opened her eyes.
"How is she?" Kim Do-Joon asked, trying to conceal his anxiety.
Siwelin shook her head with a sorrowful expression. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Kim Do-Joon used his Insight skill to check Kim So-Eun's condition. Unfortunately, nothing had changed.
Condition
- Nine Yin Absolute Meridians
The anticipation that had built up within Kim Do-Joon deflated, and the pounding in his chest subsided as if it had never been there. Sensing Siwelin’s dejected thoughts, he quickly grasped the situation.
It seems like she can make things temporarily better but not cure it...
Siwelin’s ability to heal diseases worked by amplifying the patient’s own vitality and self-healing capabilities, allowing them to overcome the illness naturally. However, not even her divine power could cure a disease caused by a specific, unyielding factor that the body could not combat on its own.
"I see..." Kim Do-Joon murmured.
Kim Do-Joon had somewhat expected this outcome. He had already tried making support-type Hunters use their healing skills on Kim So-Eun, often at great expense. However, none had been effective. Healing skills could reattach severed limbs, but they could not cure congenital anomalies.
I thought this would finally cure her...
Siwelin was not merely someone who had awakened to a skill. She was a saintess who had directly communicated with the divine and cultivated her abilities.
It seems like I have no choice but to find a medicine after all.
With a resolute expression, Kim Do-Joon clenched his teeth. The brief glimmer of hope that he had felt quickly faded, leaving him with a heavy heart. Seeing his head and shoulders droop, Siwelin gently patted his back.
"Siwelin," Kim Do-Joon said quietly in the dark room. "I’m definitely the one who summoned you, right?"
She nodded as if to say, "Of course."
"Then, may I give you one command?" Kim Do-Joon asked.
Siwelin tilted her head in curiosity.
Kim Do-Joon raised his head and looked at her with a determined gaze.
"Protect my daughter. No matter what happens, no matter who tries to harm her, do everything in your power to stop them. If you ever have to choose between saving me or her, don’t hesitate. Save her first."
Siwelin’s eyes widened slightly in surprise at his firm tone. Kim Do-Joon felt the connection he shared with Siwelin suddenly intensify. He was not sure what exactly was happening, but he had a vague sense that she had fully understood and accepted his command.
Siwelin nodded with a somewhat sorrowful expression. She then traced a circle in the air, causing a white glow to fill the room. Her sacred artifact, the silver mirror that had disappeared with her, reappeared in the air.
As Siwelin gently placed the mirror on Kim So-Eun's chest, an unfamiliar message window appeared before Kim Do-Joon's eyes.
[Saintess of Sacrifice Siwelin wishes to transfer her sacred artifact to another individual. Do you accept?]
