She took two hits that made the room hold its breath.
The first caught her shoulder and drove her sideways, the ethereal armor flaring and cracking at the impact point, fractures of light spreading across the pauldron before reassembling. The second hit her sword arm on the block and she felt it, visibly, the hiss of breath through her teeth audible in the brief quiet.
Ragna filled the space immediately, drawing the guardian’s attention back with a strike to the back of the knee Allen had opened earlier, reopening the wound, dark blood flowing fresh. The guardian turned on him with something that had shifted in its eyes.
Allen hit it from the other side.
Back and forth, the four of them rotating, Cleo threading healing through the gaps, the guardian taking damage and giving it back and taking more, its movements growing more deliberate as the fight lengthened, the patience it had greeted them with at the door burning down into something that had less calculation behind it and more heat.
Lady Silva read it.
She came in during an exchange where Ragna had the guardian’s cleaver arm occupied and Allen had drawn its eyes left, and she found a line that opened for exactly the length of time she needed. She drove forward, the Valkyrie’s light blazing down the blade, and the sword went into the guardian’s shoulder at the join of neck and armor-thick skin, deep, clean, grating against something dense before she drove it the final inch.
The guardian went rigid.
Dark blood poured from the wound in a sudden rush, more than anything they had drawn so far, running down its arm and hitting the floor in thick drops that steamed faintly in the cold air.
Lady Silva pulled the blade free and stepped back.
For one moment the room was completely still.
Then the guardian’s eyes changed.
The amber in them had been steady throughout the fight, focused, the glow of something old and controlled and confident. What replaced it came from somewhere beneath that, a deeper color, red bleeding into the amber from the edges inward until the steadiness was gone entirely and what looked back at them was not patient at all.
It opened its mouth and the sound that came out hit the walls and came back from all directions at once.
The geometric carvings on the walls flared in response.
Lady Silva was already moving backward, the Valkyrie armor flickering around her, the injury to her shoulder visible now in the way she held that arm, the sword still raised but the elevation of it costing her something. She looked at the guardian and made the calculation in the span of a breath.
"Back," she said. "Everyone back. Now."
Nobody argued.
They moved for the door in a tight group, Ragna covering the rear, war hammer up, putting his body between the guardian and the others with the complete matter-of-factness of someone who had decided that was his job and was comfortable with the implications. Allen was at Lady Silva’s side, one hand near her uninjured arm without touching it, ready.
The guardian watched them go.
It did not charge. It stood in the center of the treasure room with its cleaver hanging at its side and the red burning in its eyes and the blood running from its shoulder, and it watched them retreat through the door with the particular quality of attention that said it was not letting them leave so much as it was choosing not to follow.
Not yet.
The door swung shut behind them and the amber light from the gap at the base of it vanished.
The corridor was dark and cold and quiet.
Lady Silva let the Valkyrie disperse slowly, the light coming apart like breath in winter air, and stood in her own body again, silver hair, one arm held carefully at her side, breathing measured and controlled. She looked at the door for a moment.
"We regroup," she said. "We eat, we rest, we assess." She looked at each of them in turn. "And then we go back in."
Allen looked at the door. "It’s still in there."
"Yes," Lady Silva said.
"Good," Allen said.
Ragna looked at the door with that expression. The one he was not supposed to have. He managed to convert it into something more neutral before Allen could tell him to stop.
Cleo was already at Lady Silva’s shoulder, hands moving, the green light threading carefully into the injury, her face carrying the focused quiet of someone doing delicate work.
From somewhere deep in the room behind the door, they heard the guardian move. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
"Hehehehehe" Kael who was watching let out and evil laugh.
"Did you all think getting my treasure would be that easy? Never, you need to get even stronger and better to do that."
"Now that I’m done with you guys, I should really head back and see what Violet is up to"
