The school bell rang with an almost ironic cheeriness, its chime slicing through the crisp morning air like it hadn't been weeks since a certain demon queen-in-child-form nearly exploded the training yard.
Elias stood outside the gates, clutching Rhea's hand in a way that looked casual, but wasn't. She was unusually quiet, her eyes focused on her shoes as she scuffed them against the dirt.
"You don't have to go in if you're not ready," Elias said gently.
Rhea shook her head. "I want to. I want to prove I'm... less explode-y."
He gave her a dry look. "That's a low bar, Rhea."
Her lip twitched. "I'm stepping over it. Gracefully."
Despite everything—the rumors, the guild whispers, the Bell of Purity incident—Rhea had insisted on returning. Not in a tantrum or a fit of rebellious fire, but with a quiet, determined sort of maturity that Elias wasn't used to seeing in her. She had changed. And not just because she stopped threatening to smite squirrels.
He squeezed her hand once, then let go.
"Alright. Go in there and pretend you don't know any shadow hexes. Or that you've been harboring a demon general in the woods."
"Check. Normal child behavior," Rhea mumbled, tugging her scarf up to her nose like it was a shield.
She stepped through the school gates.
The courtyard fell quiet.
A few students glanced up from their benches and whispered behind hands. A trio of boys from the combat class paused mid-spar to exchange wary looks. Even the school's caretaker—a squat old man with a broom permanently fused to his grip—narrowed his eyes at her.
Rhea didn't flinch.
Instead, she adjusted the straps of her school bag and kept walking, calm, composed, focused.
She passed Lina in the hallway—her only friend from before—and the elf girl blinked, then offered a small smile.
Rhea returned it.
Progress.
In the classroom, the teacher—an overly nervous man named Professor Jandrell—stopped mid-sentence when she entered.
"Miss Rhea," he said, voice pitching up like a cornered rabbit. "You... you've returned."
She bowed, formally. "If that's alright."
Jandrell glanced at Elias, who was standing at the door with the principal. The principal nodded.
"...Yes. Yes, of course. Please, take your seat."
Rhea chose the second-to-last row. Not the back—too suspicious. Not the front—too threatening. She sat down quietly and placed her hands on her desk.
No ominous mana flares. No spooky whispers from cursed artifacts. Not even a spark of black fire.
Somehow, that was more unsettling.
Class resumed.
The lesson was about elemental ratios in hybrid spellcasting, but Rhea only half-listened. Her thoughts wandered. She stared out the window, her fingers unconsciously tracing circles into the wood.
She remembered the look on Elias's face when she asked, "Would you still protect me... if I wasn't me?"
He'd hugged her. He always did that when he didn't know what to say.
A small warmth settled in her chest.
"Rhea," came the teacher's voice, jerking her back.
"Yes?"
"Can you give an example of when a fire-water hybrid spell might fail?"
Rhea blinked. "When you're panicking and accidentally reverse the mana braid, causing the water to condense too early and smother the flame—resulting in either steam burns or an implosion?"
There was a pause.
Then: "That... is correct."
She heard a few students murmur behind her.
"She knows that?"
"Didn't she melt a field last month?"
"I heard she summoned a demon with her sneeze."
Rhea kept her expression neutral, but inside, she fought the urge to fidget. At break, she stood to leave—and was immediately approached by Lina.
"You... came back," the elf girl said, hands clasped together. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
"Yeah. They didn't expel me. Yet."
Lina hesitated, then offered a small pouch of candied chestnuts.
"I saved these. I was hoping you'd come back. We're doing festival banners today. Want to help?"
Rhea blinked. "You're not afraid of me?"
Lina shrugged. "You protected me. And you look sad now. Scary people don't look sad."
That was... surprisingly profound for a girl who once cried over a stubbed toe.
Rhea accepted the candy. "Alright. But only if I don't get paint on my scarf. Elias says it makes me look 'less like a terrifying warlord.'"
Lina giggled. "It kind of does."
Painting banners with the art club wasn't exactly glorious, but Rhea found it oddly soothing. The colors, the chatter, the simplicity of it. She painted a flame—carefully restrained within the lines.
"You made the fire too pretty," one boy teased. "Real fire's messy."
"I've met messy," Rhea replied dryly. "I prefer pretty."
Later that day, Elias picked her up at the gate. He raised an eyebrow as she emerged, paint-smeared and munching chestnuts.
"Well?"
"I didn't hex anyone," she reported. "I only got one weird vision from a cursed desk."
"...What?"
"Nothing."
They walked in silence for a bit.
"Elias," she said suddenly. "Do you think people can really change?"
He looked down at her. Her expression was serious—too serious for a girl with glitter in her hair.
"I think people can try," he said. "And that trying is already change."
She considered that.
Then she bumped her shoulder into his side. "Your emotional speeches are getting better."
"I've been practicing. You're a tough audience."
At home, she carefully hung her painted festival banner above her bed. It was crooked. She didn't care.
Under it, she scribbled in her journal:
"Day One of Being Less Explode-y. Success."
