The fire had long died down. The field was mostly cleaned up. The scent of burnt grass still clung faintly to my coat as I carried Rhea home.
She was asleep by the time we reached the door.
Not the pretend kind of "I'm totally resting my eyes" sleep, but the real, slack-jawed, snore-curling kind. Her scarf-cape flopped over her face like a wilting flag of victory. She'd passed out mid-boast about fire spirals and snack-based diplomacy.
"I hereby declare myself honorary protector of snackdom," she'd mumbled.
Then: zzzzz.
I tucked her in without waking her.
Or so I thought.
I was halfway down the hall when I heard it.
"Elias..."
I paused.
Her voice was groggy. Soft.
"You're warm," she mumbled.
I waited. Nothing more. Just a little mumble from dreamland.
I shook my head and turned away.
Back in my room, I started peeling off my smoke-scented coat—and froze.
My wrist was glowing.
Not brightly. Just a soft shimmer. Like moonlight through silk.
It took me a second to realize what I was seeing.
A bracelet.
No, not a real one. A magical one. Made entirely of faintly glowing runes, circling my wrist like a delicate ring of script.
I recognized the markings.
It was the Contract Seal.
Except... it had grown.
Originally, the seal had been a tiny glyph on the back of my hand. A one-way protection sigil Rhea had unknowingly imprinted on me during our first chaotic days together.
Now it had bloomed into a full, spiraling band.
"...What the hell."
I held it up to the lamp. The runes shimmered faintly as I moved.
No pain. No heat. Just... presence.
Like someone whispering "you're not alone" in a language older than thought.
I swallowed. The moment felt suddenly very, very personal.
"Rhea?" I asked softly, knocking on her door.
No response.
I peeked inside.
She was curled up on her bed, limbs tangled in a defensive sprawl, hugging a pillow like it owed her money. The moonlight from the window made her silver hair glow faintly. Her brow twitched like she was dreaming something too intense for such a small body.
I stepped inside, hesitant.
"Hey," I whispered. "You didn't... do anything to the contract, did you?"
No answer.
I sighed and turned to leave—
Then she spoke.
"...You're mine now."
My heart stuttered.
Her voice was a murmur. Soft. Not fully conscious.
"Even if I sleep," she whispered, "even if I burn... you're mine."
I stared at her.
She didn't open her eyes. Didn't move.
Just breathed. Dreamed.
And claimed me like a child hugging a toy too hard.
"...Possessive little gremlin," I muttered, kneeling by her bed.
But my voice didn't carry any bite.
I watched her sleep.
The contract band shimmered again—faint, quiet magic, humming like a lullaby only I could hear.
It was terrifying.
It was also... warm.
A Few Hours Earlier...
After the mock raid ended in mild, snack-related disaster, the school gave Rhea a two-day "magic safety break." Not a suspension, just... a pause.
Naturally, she spent the entire time preparing new "safe" spells.
"See?" she said, holding up a potato with a rune drawn in ketchup. "If I add a negative flow circuit here, it can only heat up a little."
"You're enchanting my lunch."
"I'm beta-testing my brilliance."
"It's leaking steam."
"I call it Spud Ignis."
It exploded.
The kitchen smelled like failure and paprika for the rest of the day.
Back in the present, I remained kneeling beside her bed, unsure of what to do.
The contract bracelet still pulsed gently. Not dangerous. But undeniably real.
I pulled out my old grimoire from my coat pocket and flipped through until I found the Chapter on soul-bound contracts.
Most were meant to be two-way.
Ours had been... one-sided.
Now, somehow, it had become mutual.
Or worse: evolved.
Some types of bonds, according to legend, weren't written in ink or blood. They were forged in intention.
In choice.
"Elias..." Rhea mumbled again.
I looked up.
She wasn't fully awake. Her fingers clutched the edge of the blanket like a lifeline.
"...Don't go away," she breathed.
I sat down on the floor.
"Not planning to," I said softly.
"I'll burn things."
"I noticed."
"...I don't wanna burn you."
That stopped me cold.
Her voice was barely a whisper. A choked murmur from some deep corner of her dreams.
"...You saved me," she said.
I didn't answer.
"I'll save you too," she promised.
Somewhere between those words, something in my chest tugged.
It wasn't magic.
It wasn't logic.
It was just a sense of knowing.
Of connection.
This girl—this tiny, terrifying, emotionally unstable ex-Demon Queen in a child's body—had bonded to me.
Not just magically.
Emotionally.
Soulfully.
I wasn't just her guardian.
I was her anchor.
At some point, I drifted off beside her bed.
When I woke, it was morning.
She was curled half on top of her blanket, one foot dangling off the mattress, snoring like a chainsaw in a tin can.
And my wrist still glowed faintly.
I flexed my fingers.
The bracelet dimmed.
Rhea stirred, blinked once, and looked at me.
Then her eyes flicked to my wrist.
Her expression went wide-eyed.
Then smug.
Then suspicious.
"...Did you touch something you weren't supposed to?"
"You did this."
"I definitely didn't."
"You muttered 'You're mine now' in your sleep."
She turned red.
"I was obviously quoting a fairy tale."
"And threatening to burn me."
"...Romantic fairy tale."
"That bracelet says otherwise."
She folded her arms. "Fine. You're slightly mine."
"Just slightly?"
"Well, emotionally. Also magically. And contractually. And probably spiritually. But only slightly."
She climbed down from the bed and poked the bracelet.
"It's warm," she said softly.
"So are you."
She paused.
"...You're not mad?"
"No."
She smiled. It wasn't her usual wicked smirk. Just something small. Honest.
"I didn't want you to vanish. Like before."
"Before?"
She looked away. "When I died last time."
I inhaled slowly. "You remember that?"
"Not all of it. Just... flashes."
I nodded. "You won't vanish either. Not if I can help it."
She looked back. Eyes shining.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
We stood there for a long second.
Then she kicked me in the shin.
"For being sappy," she said.
I sighed. "You're welcome."
