Mo Meige looked at the scheduling table on the computer screen.

This week... she was responsible for guarding the morgue for three consecutive nights.

For any Paranormal Doctor, this was an exceedingly spine-chilling work arrangement.

The scheduling of doctors was the responsibility of the deputy dean. What this implied was already clear without saying.

Last week she had already been scheduled for mortuary duty for two days, and now there was more this week.

Mo Meige was very aware of why she had fallen to this point.

She took a deep breath and turned off the scheduling table on the computer screen.

Her own consultation room, a small room of only about five or six square meters, was located right in the corridor where ghosts were sealed. It could be said to be the worst outpatient area.

Just then, the door to the consultation room opened.

"Doctor Mo," said the nurse at the door, "it’s like this... Director Klein has asked you to come over at noon."

She reached the office door of the department head.

"Director Klein..."

As Klein sat at his desk, looking at Mei Ge who had reached his office door, he said, "Mel, come in. Why are you standing at the door?"

Mei Ge ran her fingers through her hair and walked in, only to find that there was another man standing in the office: the director of the inpatient department, Virgil.

Mei Ge glanced at Virgil, then turned to Klein and said, "Director, you wanted to see me because...?"

"Take a seat."

Mei Ge bit her lip and slowly sat down.

"How do you feel after being transferred to the Netherworld Department?" Klein asked as if he didn’t care much.

"Thank you for your concern, Director. I..."

"I’m not concerned about you, Mel," Klein interrupted her ruthlessly. "You can adapt to your current working environment, right? Look, I’ve brought your former boss here today as well. If you have any complaints, you might as well speak with him."

"Mel," Virgil gave Mei Ge a sympathetic look and said, "If you have anything to say, just speak your mind."

Mei Ge actually knew what Klein hoped she would say.

If she said that phrase, Klein could make things a bit easier for her. Even the night shifts could be canceled.

"Ah, no, that’s not right..." Klein swiveled in his chair to look directly at Mei Ge, "Your former boss was not Director Virgil, but... Damon Dailun, wasn’t it?"

Klein was satisfied that Virgil had said everything he wanted to say and continued, "Your uncle’s entire family was involved in the Darren Family’s rebellion, but Minister Virgil believes in your loyalty to our family. He vouched for you in front of me, which is the only reason you’re still alive today."

Mei Ge knew that this was her moment to make a final statement.

In the past, she had offended too many people.

Her uncle had provided a powerful backing for her in the past, so she naturally had no fear. Her uncle doted on her because her mother died early, and because of this, he spoiled her immensely. It was also because of her uncle that she had the opportunity to be engaged to the Faust Family.

But now that she thought about it, this was just her uncle hedging his bets.

"As long as you do as Minister Virgil says and make a statement on the hospital’s official website, Minister Virgil will take very good care of you in the future. You know him well; he is the most tender-hearted person in our family—second to none," said the messenger.

Mei Ge knew that if she agreed, the arrangement to work in the morgue could be canceled.

She was still alive today because, within the hospital, there were still a minority who secretly remained loyal to the Dalen. And, since Milan Dailun of the Darren Family had escaped the net, Klein would use every possible means to suppress the hidden Darren faction within the hospital, hence he needed to show both kindness and severity.

If you choose to draw a clear line with your family members who are loyal to the Dalen and steadfastly pledge loyalty to the Faust Family, then all will be well.

But if you refuse to take a stand and draw a clear line, then don’t blame us for what happens next.

Klein had long since realized that Mel was not part of the Darren faction, but this identity inevitably meant she could not marry his son George, thereby becoming a negative political asset for George’s future within the family.

Mei Ge’s response was, "If you want to call off the engagement, let George himself come and talk to me. I know nothing about my uncle’s defection to the Darren Family; I have no good feelings toward the Darren Family either. However, I cannot publicly denounce my uncle, nor can I implant the cursed object made from his corpse!"

Mei Ge had already prepared herself for Klein to call off the engagement. The marriage had been arranged by the Faust Family as a way to draw her uncle, Kafka Delin, to their side; now her uncle had become a turncoat, reviled by everyone within the hospital.

Perhaps her uncle was indeed such a person, but Mei Ge was unwilling to do so. After her mother’s death, her uncle had taken her from the Seattle countryside to San Francisco, looked after her until she came of age, introduced her to the hospital, and trained her to become a Paranormal Doctor.

"Do you understand what you’re saying?"

Since Kafka Delin was Damon Dailun’s right-hand man, Klein was very keen to use his niece to suppress the remaining Darren faction within the hospital. In Klein’s view, if they chose to follow the Darren Family, in the end, it was all just for profit. In life, one must always weigh pros and cons; he intended to demonstrate the magnanimous side of the Faust Family: if you’re willing to turn over a new leaf and switch sides, your past transgressions can be overlooked.

With the benefits and consequences so clear, Klein couldn’t believe that there were still people who adhered to the medieval knightly spirit, desiring to live and die with their liege.

However, what he never expected was to encounter the first obstacle right in front of him, in the person of Mel.

"Have George come and tell me in person if he wants to call off the engagement," Mei Ge said, without hesitation, "I will never unilaterally tear up the engagement contract."

"Are you serious?" Klein, a man of vast experience in judging character, could tell that Mei Ge was serious.

Mel Mo, Chinese name Mo Meige, Kafka Delin’s sister’s daughter, was of Chinese-American mixed heritage. Within the hospital, her reputation was not good.

Selfish and self-centered, her abilities far from matched her uncle’s, and that was the impression she left on most people.

No matter what Klein thought, he would never have guessed... that she would become the first obstacle to his plan!
