The word sat in the air differently than the others had.
Vespera’s voice had not changed in volume or pace. But something in the room had changed anyway, and Alex noticed Eclipse’s posture shift slightly, and Zara’s expression go a little more still, and he understood without needing to be told that this was a topic that landed differently than discussing the physical characteristics of Elves.
"No one knows where they came from," Vespera said.
"No one knows where they are based. That is the first problem and it is not a small one. Every other power on this continent has a territory, a seat, an address. You know where the Aeonian Empire is. You know where the Night Order operates. The Undead have no home you can point to and no border you can enforce." She looked at Alex steadily.
"They exist within all the races. Scattered. Hidden. Operating inside institutions, inside noble houses, inside organisations that have no idea they have been infiltrated."
"What do they want?" Alex asked.
"Knowledge," Vespera said.
"Power. The specific kind of power that comes from studying things that should not be studied." A pause.
"The common people hate necromancy because it disrespects the dead, the body is a vessel, the spirit has departed, interfering with what remains is considered a violation. That is a cultural and religious objection." She folded her hands in her lap.
"The people in power hate the Undead for a different reason. They build armies. Every battlefield, every disaster, every city that suffers a plague, the dead do not simply decompose. They become material. The Undead have caused more than one empire’s political system to fracture because of the threat their accumulating strength represents. You cannot easily kill what is already dead. You cannot negotiate with something that does not have living interests. You cannot make a treaty with an army that grows with every casualty on every side."
The room was very quiet.
"They conduct experiments," Vespera said, and for the first time in the briefing, her voice carried something underneath it that was not clinical.
"On everyone. Not just humans. The Aeonians have discovered their people in Undead facilities. The Elves have found the same. The Dwarves. It does not discriminate by race because it does not think in terms of race. It thinks in terms of subjects and material."
Alex was watching his mother’s hands.
They were completely still.
’She knows something she’s not saying yet,’ he thought.
’Or she’s saying this for my benefit specifically. For a reason.’
He stored that observation without acting on it.
"Is there anyone fighting them specifically?" he asked. "Or is it just general awareness across empires?"
"Every empire has some capacity dedicated to it. But the problem is the infiltration. You cannot wage an effective campaign against an enemy whose soldiers look exactly like your own citizens. You root out one cell and three more have been operating in the time it took you to find the first." Vespera exhaled slowly.
"The Night Order is the most aggressive about it. They have the structure and the classified information sharing to actually pursue it. But even they haven’t solved the problem of not knowing where the centre is. Every Undead operation they dismantle leads to another, larger one that was already in motion."
"So there’s a head," Alex said. "Somewhere."
"There has to be," Vespera said. "Whether it’s a person, an entity, an institution, something is organizing them. The scale of their operations over multiple centuries requires coordination that doesn’t happen without a source." She looked at him. "No one has found it."
’No one yet,’ Alex thought.
The warmth stirred.
He pushed it aside.
"One more question," he said.
"About the Aeonian. Astaria Elysian. You said she was their greatest descendant and they drove her out. What kind of power are we actually talking about? You said the Night Order is the most deadly force on the continent. That’s her. So what does she actually look like in a fight?"
Vespera was quiet for a moment.
Then she said, with the calm of someone being carefully accurate: "I have not seen her fight at full capacity. Very few living people have. What I know comes from accounts and inference." She paused.
"What the accounts agree on is this, Astaria Elysian does not fight the way other Transcendence ranked individuals fight. She does not simply apply mana with more efficiency or strike with more power. She works with mana at a structural level that most people spend their entire careers not even knowing exists. She doesn’t overpower opponents. She unravels them."
Alex stared at his mother.
Vespera’s expression was perfectly composed.
"She sounds," Zara said, very carefully, "like an extremely bad person to fight."
"She is an extremely bad person to fight," Vespera agreed.
"Which is precisely why the Night Order has not been dismantled by the combined empires, despite the empires having more numbers and more resources and considerably more political motivation to do so." She paused.
"They have looked at the option. They have calculated the cost. They have decided not to attempt it."
’Even my mother’s tone shifts slightly when she talks about Astaria Elysian,’ Alex noted.
’Not fear. Not quite. But something close to the kind of respect you have for a natural disaster.’
"Right," he said. "So. The geography."
Vespera looked at him.
"You said Eldoria. You’ve shown me the map. Tell me how it actually works. Not just where things are. How it actually works." He looked at the rough sketch on the paper.
"Because I don’t think the lines on that map tell the real story."
Vespera looked at her son for a moment.
Then she smiled. Small, private, the kind that looked like it had been earned rather than given.
"No," she said. "They don’t."
