The chamber was underground.
That was the first thing, not the torches, not the altar, not the murals that covered every surface from floor to vaulted ceiling.
Just the specific quality of air that had not been near a window in a very long time.
It was cool, still, the kind of still that belonged to places that had been doing what they were built to do for so long that the stone itself had developed an opinion about it.
Alex stood at the entrance and looked.
The chamber was large, larger than it had any right to be given how far they’d descended to reach it.
The ceiling arched high overhead, the vault supported by columns carved from dark stone that had been polished to a faint shine by what must have been centuries of hands passing over them.
Blue flame torches lined the walls at intervals, not orange, not yellow, blue, the cold and steady blue of something that had decided fire was a concept it would engage with on its own terms.
They did not flicker.
They burned without movement, throwing light that was clear and strange and made the shadows fall at angles that didn’t quite match what physics suggested.
The altar dominated the centre.
Wide enough to hold multiple people standing at its edges without crowding, carved from the same dark stone as the columns but older, the surface worn smooth in the places where it had been used and still sharply defined in the places it hadn’t.
Symbols ran around its border in a language Alex didn’t recognise, inlaid in silver that caught the blue torchlight and gave back something colder than light had any business being.
The murals were everywhere.
Floor to ceiling, continuous, a single image that wrapped the entire chamber in one unbroken scene.
It took him a moment to read the scale of it, the figures depicted were each perhaps the height of a hand, rendered in extraordinary detail, hundreds of them across hundreds of situations, connected by lines of shadow that wound between them like threads in a weaving.
A history.
It was not a battle scene, nor a religious image, if he had to guess it was a record of Shadow guards and their masters across generations, each pair connected by those silver-black lines, the thread of the bond rendered visible in the mural as something that looked less like a chain and more like a root system, growing, branching, deepening with time.
The oldest figures at the far end were worn almost to abstraction.
Their faces smoothed by centuries into suggestion rather than detail.
The pairs still legible in posture and proximity even when the faces were gone, the specific body language of two people who had been through enough together that their silhouettes told the story without needing anything else.
The newer figures, near the entrance, were sharp and recent. Clear faces. Defined lines.
The detail of something that hadn’t yet had time to be worn down.
And beside the newest pair—
Empty wall.
Not unfinished or damaged, it looked like they were deliberately left empty, the stone prepared and waiting, the silver border of the nearest panel extending to frame a space that had been left for exactly this purpose.
Alex looked at it for a moment.
’Appropriate,’ he thought.
Behind him, Alessio stood with his arms folded, violet robes dark in the blue light, the silver at his throat and brow catching it cleanly.
He was looking at the murals with the expression of someone who had been in this room before and found it, each time, exactly what it had always been.
Unchanged, patient and certain of its own purpose in a way that very few things were.
Eclipse stood slightly to his right, head tilted back to take in the vaulted ceiling, saying nothing.
She had the look of someone in a place that demanded a certain quiet and was giving it willingly, not subdued, just present in the way the room asked for presence.
Alex turned back to the empty space on the wall.
The blue flames burned without flickering.
The shadows fell at their wrong angles.
The chamber waited.
Footsteps on the stairs.
