Opening — Rising from the Ashes of Quelimane

The coastal winds of Mozambique still carried a bitter chill, even as the worst of the ice receded. The corpse of the slain Ice Worm lay draped across a section of Quelimane’s broken waterfront, its vast crystalline body cracked and steaming from residual explosions. For the first time in days, the sun peeked through torn stormclouds.

Commander Asha Okonkwo stood on the flight deck of the INS Vikrant, the Indian Navy’s formidable aircraft carrier now acting as her forward command ship. Her exo-helmet was clipped to her belt, revealing tightly braided hair and a gaze of unrelenting steel. The wind whipped at her navy-blue coat as she looked out toward the Indian Ocean.

Behind her, officers from the United States, India, France, and the African Union gathered in the mobile war room constructed on the flight deck. Live battle feeds, magical resonance maps, and satellite surveillance danced in holo-screens above the deck.

“Begin the feed,” Asha said quietly.

Her voice was soft, but everyone obeyed instantly.

Asha turned to face the coalition representatives. Her tone was crisp, decisive.

“We’ve confirmed Ice Worm concentrations moving through the Mozambique Channel, sweeping north along the Tanzanian coast,” she said. “Our goal is containment and extermination. We hold the line at Dar es Salaam, with supporting fleets running interception patterns along the channel.”

General Rodrigo Lemaire of the French Navy nodded. “And the remaining Arctic-class mechs are en route from Diego Garcia?”

“ETA three hours,” replied Admiral Shivendra Bahl of India.

Asha continued, “Satellite scans indicate two distinct pulse frequencies matching Mary’s and Dyana’s magical signatures. The worms are splitting in allegiance.”

A murmur passed through the group.

“Mary’s artifact—what did Jamie Lancaster call it?” asked Admiral Bahl.

“The Moonlight Core,” Asha replied. “It’s amplifying her control. We confirmed it after observing coordinated movements during the last Mozambican assault.”

“And Dyana?” asked the U.S. Rear Admiral Elaine Park.

“She's redirecting smaller packs of worms away from her forward bases,” Asha said. “Trying to bait them into Mary’s domain. We believe she intends to confront Mary directly.”

The air grew tense.

“And us?” asked Lemaire.

Asha’s eyes sharpened. “We hit both. Hard. But we prioritize civilian evacuation, worm extermination, and retrieval of magical resonance cores. Mary wants control. Dyana wants dominance. We want survival.”

She stepped closer to the center holo-map. “Let’s give Earth that.”

Night fell quickly in Tanzania, but the glow of war lit the coast.

Along the beachlines, UN Mechs in cold-resistant armor waded into the surf, shoulder to shoulder with tanks, naval drones, and mobile artillery. The sky thundered with the engines of Indian and French Rafales, U.S. F-35s, and Indian Mig29K.

From the black waters, three Ice Worms surged.

Each the length of a skyscraper laid on its side, they twisted and roared, launching frozen spines into the shore. One tore through a Tanzanian gunship. Another shattered a seaside hospital with a breath of frost.

Asha’s voice rang over the global command channel.

“Target Alpha: focus fire on the central worm! Raptors 3 and 5, flank to the east! USS New Hampshire, fire torpedoes on my mark—”

BOOM.

The Ice Worm reeled as anti-magic missiles struck its eye. Mechs surged forward, locking magnetic harpoons to its hide.

“NOW!” Asha roared.

The USS New Hampshire’s torpedoes struck from below, and the mechs above detonated synchronized charges. The worm convulsed—then collapsed, its flesh hissing against the sea.

“Alpha down,” an Indian pilot radioed.

But there was no time to celebrate. The second worm opened its maw—and from it emerged something new.

A blue sigil of Lunar origin flared within its throat.

“What is that?” Rear Admiral Park murmured.

Jamie Lancaster, tuned into the command channel from her lab, responded at once. “That’s Mary’s command seal. She’s not just guiding them—she’s weaponizing them magically.”

The Ice Worm’s breath blasted forth, not just cold—but a wave of shimmering lunar energy. UN mechs were tossed back, sensors blinded, and one French corvette lost control and crashed into the reef.

“Get me eyes on the source of that sigil!” Asha barked.

A drone zipped through the clouds and caught a faint glimmer—a moonstone beacon floating miles offshore.

“That’s Mary’s link,” Jamie said. “If we destroy it—”

“Then we cut her leash,” Asha finished. “Operation Trident Storm proceeds to Phase Three.”

Amid the chaos, Solomon Kane had deployed ahead of the main force, now a ghost among rooftops and rubble. He had already marked the second worm for attack—but the lunar shield disrupted standard munitions.

He switched to experimental tech—arcane grenades laced with resonance disruption shards. Vaulting across broken buildings, he waited for the worm to rise again.

He threw—one, two, three—then dove behind an overturned freighter.

The blast shook the sea.

The sigil flickered.

The worm screamed.

And Solomon, breathing heavily, marked the kill for the fleet to finish.

“Lancaster,” he radioed, “you were right. Her control depends on these sigils.”

“Then we know what to target,” Jamie said.

Aboard the floating Moonlit Shrine, Mary stood barefoot in the sacred circle, arms raised as the ocean trembled.

Her moonstone tiara pulsed in time with the artifact at the ship’s heart. Lunar energy coursed through her veins, through her thoughts, and into the beasts below.

And then—pain.

The tether snapped on one of her worms.

Her eyes opened, glowing with fury.

“Who dares?” she whispered.

The priestess beside her hesitated. “The humans… they’ve begun severing the link.”

Mary’s voice sharpened. “Then we strike back.”

She plunged her hands into the crystal basin. The Moonlight Core responded—pulsing like a heartbeat.

“Call the remaining worms. Bind them with the Rite of Three. If I cannot guide them all… I will unleash them on Dyana and the humans alike.”

And from the deep sea, five titanic forms stirred.

As word of the second worm’s defeat spread, cheers broke out among the combined fleet. But Asha did not celebrate.

She watched as new signals appeared on the satellite grid.

“Five more,” Jamie’s voice came in. “All bigger. All moving faster.”

Asha looked out toward the horizon.

“What’s our window?” she asked.

“Three hours,” Jamie said. “Maybe less.”

Rear Admiral Park stepped forward. “Commander Okonkwo. You've led two successful counter-offensives. The UN has authorized full tactical autonomy for East African and Indian Ocean operations. You now speak with global military authority in this theater.”

Asha blinked, then nodded slowly.

“Then I’ll use it.”

She turned to her fleet.

“All ships, prepare for deep-sea engagement. Get me orbital assets. And patch me through to Vaelin Thorne.”

There was silence.

“Why Vaelin?” Bahl asked.

“Because she’s the only one who isn’t trying to weaponize the worms,” Asha said. “If we can’t kill them all, maybe we can turn them. If not into allies… at least into something better than weapons.”

And as the skies darkened once more, the world braced for the next storm.

The storm wasn’t over.

But for the first time in weeks—

Humanity was fighting back.
