"When did you get your wolf back?"

His low, impossibly hoarse voice vibrated directly against my swollen lips. The sound was dripping with absolute, terrifying dominance. Nicholas’s rough, calloused thumb continued to dangerously stroke the frantic pulse jumping in my carotid artery. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

I couldn’t breathe. My chest heaved violently against his solid frame. The freezing autumn night air was entirely saturated with his intense, overpowering alpha scent. Rain. Damp earth. Pure, concentrated male pheromones. The mate bond had just detonated inside my bloodstream like a high-voltage electrical current, melting my muscles completely. My inner wolf was completely ecstatic. She was wagging her tail in the dark corners of my mind, practically rejoicing and desperate to submit to her fated mate.

But my human mind was utterly terrified.

I stared up into his face. The beautiful, mesmerizing forest green irises had been completely swallowed by a pitch-black, unhinged violence. He was the Mad King. "Let me go!" I choked out.

My voice cracked hysterically into the dead night. I shoved both of my trembling hands flat against his rock-hard chest. I used every single ounce of my pathetic human strength to push his massive, towering frame away. My scuffed sneakers slipped weakly against the freezing stone pavement. I scrambled backward frantically, trying to escape his blistering body heat.

Nicholas didn’t budge a single inch.

Instead, his large hand tightened slightly around my delicate throat. He pinned me completely flush against the rough, unforgiving stone wall of Rosewood Manor. The freezing rock bit sharply into my fragile spine.

"I asked you a question, Irina." His voice was a low, incredibly dangerous growl. It rumbled deep in his broad chest, sending a violent shockwave into my bones. "Your wolf was completely shattered on your birthday. She was dead. How the hell is she awake?!"

"It’s none of your business!" I shrieked.

I thrashed violently against his iron grip. Hot, heavy tears immediately spilled over my dark lashes. They tracked quickly down my flushed, burning cheeks. I frantically twisted my neck, trying to break his hold. Every single place his massive body touched mine felt like it was literally catching on fire. My body was curling inward instinctively, desperately trying to shrink away and disappear into the dark pine forest.

He grabbed my jaw firmly. His scorching thumb pressed aggressively into my fragile skin. He forcefully tilted my head up, absolutely refusing to let me look away from him.

"You are my mate," Nicholas roared. The explosive, furious sound violently rattled my eardrums. "You wear my mark on your neck! Everything about you belongs to me!"

"No!" I sobbed aloud, my voice echoing off the high stone ceilings. "I belong to absolutely no one! You ruined my life! You let them torture me!"

The agonizing memory of the abuse suddenly crashed over my brain. I thought of Maxim’s heavy, merciless fists. I remembered the agonizing, terrifying isolation of being treated like a disposable omega slave. My body completely dissolved into violent, uncontrollable tremors. My blue eyes overflowed with absolute, desperate fear. I was a broken omega, completely traumatized by the brutal power structures of his underground mafia empire. Someone touching my neck was my absolute worst trigger, and he was currently holding me by the throat.

"I don’t want you," I whispered frantically, shaking my head. "Please, Nicholas. Just let me go."

My broken words hit him like physical bullets.

Nicholas’s massive body went completely, terrifyingly rigid. The dark, twisting shadows in his pitch-black eyes turned instantly deadly. The crushing, suffocating weight of his alpha aura violently exploded into the courtyard. It hit my fragile body like a solid brick wall. The sheer, unhinged dominance sucked the oxygen straight out of the cold night air. The ancient, towering pine trees around us actually shook under the raw weight of his fury.

"You think you have a choice?" he snarled dangerously.

He suddenly dropped his large hand from my throat. I gasped greedily for air, but before I could even take a single full breath, his blistering hot hand clamped violently down over my small wrist.

It was a band of unbreakable iron.

"Ah!" I shrieked in pure, unadulterated terror.

He turned around sharply. His heavy coat whipped violently through the freezing autumn wind. With brutal, completely unforgiving force, he yanked me forward.

"You are coming back with me right now," he commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument.

"No! Stop!" I screamed frantically.

He started dragging me forcefully down the twisting, paved pathway. I stumbled helplessly behind his towering, imposing frame. My legs felt like absolute jelly, barely able to support my own weight. My cheap canvas backpack bounced violently against my spine. My scuffed sneakers slapped uselessly against the dark ground as I was ripped forward. I dug my heels in, desperately trying to arrest our forward momentum. It was completely useless. His measured, incredibly powerful strides ate up the distance with terrifying ease. He was a lethal apex predator aggressively dragging his cornered prey.

The sheer pain in my wrist was excruciating. The physical force threatened to dislocate my shoulder.

"Nicholas, you’re hurting me!" I cried out, struggling wildly.

He didn’t stop. He didn’t even look back at me. The jealousy and destructive rage had completely obliterated whatever logic he had left. He was taking me back to his blood-soaked palace. He was going to lock me securely in the sprawling, terrifying Greystone estate where no one would ever find me.

My heart hammered a frantic, sickening rhythm against my ribs.

If he took me away, what would happen to Luka? My sweet, completely innocent baby boy was still waiting for me in the brightly lit staff kitchen. He was just a baby, laughing and playing happily with his soft blocks. If Nicholas dragged me into the absolute nightmare of the werewolf underground, he would eventually find my son. He would completely destroy our safe haven. He would realize the pup belonged to the bloodline he despised.

The terrifying thought was a sharp, electric shock of pure panic to my system.

I instantly stopped fighting the magnetic pull of the mate bond and started fighting purely for my child. The fierce instinct of a mother violently overpowered the submissive biology of an omega.

"I said, let me go!" I ripped a pathetic, ragged sob from my raw throat.

I reached my free, trembling hand up and wildly clawed at his thick fingers. My short nails scraped desperately against his scorching, tanned skin, trying to pry his iron grip off my wrist. I kicked at his heavy boots. I threw my entire body weight backward in a blind panic.

Nicholas suddenly halted in his tracks.

The abrupt stop was so incredibly violent I crashed directly into his solid, muscular back. He spun around instantly, his terrifying grip still locked firmly on my wrist. His massive chest heaved with terrifying, unhinged fury. He grabbed both of my fragile shoulders, his large hands bruising my skin through the oversized sweater.

"You are never running from me again!" he roared into the pitch-black woods. "You are mine!"

I cowered entirely, my body curling inward as I prepared for the absolute worst. I tightly squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the devastating punishment that always followed a mafia alpha’s rage.

Suddenly, a loud, incredibly clear voice pierced straight through the dead silence of the dark estate.
