Ascension of the last Celestial

Chapter 37: Am I the Side Character?*

"You... you saw my status, right?"

Valerian asked, his voice low as he and Arthur began to stare at each other. The overwhelming pressure tried to push Valerian down, but with his sheer will and pride, he refused to go down.

’It’s not a physical weight, it’s more like a presence.’

If this pressure was physical weight put on him, there was no way he could fight it with his weakened body. But it was more like a mind attack designed to apply pressure.

They both stared at each other for only a few seconds, but in these seconds, dozens of thoughts and contingency plans ran through Valerian’s mind in case Arthur would attack him. But he didn’t. He just sighed, and the pressure in the cave vanished.

"What the fuck are you? And why is someone like you here?"

The questions left Valerian slightly confused.

"What do you mean? If you saw my status, you should know that I’m a hybrid."

Valerian’s answer just caused a more confused expression to appear on Arthur’s face.

"What do you mean hybrid? Don’t you know your own race?"

Now it was Valerian’s turn again to be confused as he didn’t understand what Arthur was saying. But that confusion didn’t last long as something that happened came back to his mind.

’When I was in the cocoon, I felt something come from my core and rewrite my body. Maybe it wasn’t just my physique that changed.’

’He looked confused when I said hybrid. Did my two halves change? Status.’

As Valerian opened his status, Arthur looked at the still naked Valerian with a weird expression.

’This guy is so not normal.’

Back when Arthur arrived at the battlefield of Valerian and the chief, he was shocked because the whole field looked like the clash of two armies, with blood and, strangely, only limbs laying everywhere. Craters and deep ravines scarred the landscape, and a faint smell of ozone lingered in the air.

When he looked through the rubble of the fight, he found a white-silver ball of hair laying in the distance. But as he moved closer, the first weird thing happened. When he got within 5 meters of Valerian’s body, he heard a loud ringing in his ear that only he himself could hear.

[Ding!]

[Warning! Anomaly Detected!]

[Host is advised to retreat.]

[Traces of the Divine have been located nearby. Host is advised to retreat immediately!]

’What is going on?! Traces of the Divine? Is it this person?’

Ignoring the notifications that assaulted his ears, Arthur moved closer. When he finally saw Valerian laying there in a crater, he was more confused than anything.

’Who is that? Is that the anomaly the system warned me about? And why does he look so good?! That’s not fair!’

As his gaze moved from his face up to the top of Valerian’s head and he saw his horns, a new and darker thought entered his mind.

’Is he some kind of demon? Or maybe the child of a demon and an angel since the system said there are traces of the divine nearby?’

Shaking his head, Arthur decided to use one of the functions of his unique skill.

’Analyze.’

Pure shock, that was how Arthur reacted once he saw the status of the boy laying in front of him.

’That’s just too insane. And I thought I was way too overpowered.’

As he stared at the status screen, he slowly took in all the lines. His gaze stopped first at the titles, to be more specific, the last one.

’[Candidate for Godhood]... so he can become a god? Description.’

Following his command, the same window that appeared when Valerian was looking at his descriptions appeared.

[Description]

[Title: Candidate for Godhood]

This entity is a candidate for Godhood, meaning that fate is naturally leaning towards them, causing causality to be attracted towards this entity. Be it fortune or misfortune, fate doesn’t care.]

’He can become a god... but now that I think about it, what does god mean? Is that just a strong person?’

Like answering his question, the same system interface appeared.

[Ding!]

[God: A god is different from a deity as a deity is a person that has achieved a high rank. But a god is a being of a higher tier, it is impossible to become a god without the presence of a god seed.]

Arthur’s curiosity was satisfied enough and he moved on to the other parts of the boy’s status.

’Primordial Celestial Dragon... what is that, system?’

[Ding!]

[Description]

[Race: Primordial Celestial Dragon]

An impossible existence that shouldn’t exist within the current World Logic. It is the perfect, absolute fusion of ancient divinity and cosmic supremacy—the birth of a new progenitor line. Their bodies are built for nothing less than to hold the weight of the cosmos. They do not walk the path of mortals. With the [God Seed] rooted in their core, they are the literal blueprint of a future God.]

’What in the fuck?! Why is someone like that here?’

Just then, Arthur heard the roar of a monster that was attracted by the fight Valerian had with the chief.

’I have to get out of here.’

Looking at the unconscious Valerian, Arthur had a complicated expression, unsure if he should take him or leave him behind.

’Fuck it.’

With that, he holstered Valerian on his shoulders and carried him off, but not before opening the description of his bloodline and physique so he could look at it while carrying Valerian to safety.

[Description]

[Bloodline: Primordial Celestial Dragon]

The undiluted essence of cosmic sovereigns, now perfectly synchronized with their origin. It is a bloodline of absolute pride and dominance that commands the primordial elements of the cosmos. The ambient mana of the world does not just obey this blood, it violently surrenders to it. Even in its current unawakened state, the pressure sleeping within these veins is enough to make lesser species instinctively fall to their knees.]

[Description]

[Physique: Infinite Cosmos Physique]

A physical vessel engineered to shatter mortal limitations. This body possesses no internal boundaries, allowing its storage capacity for mana and power to expand infinitely. Death is treated as nothing more than a temporary state; as long as a single drop of mana remains in the vicinity, the flesh will violently reconstruct itself from the brink of destruction. It is an unyielding, immortal shell built for the sole purpose of carrying a God.]

Reading these descriptions while navigating through the dangerous forest of the Voidwoods, Arthur couldn’t help but feel like he was just a side character in this guy’s story, even though it should be the other way around.

Soon they reached the cave where he had been setting up camp for the past days. Arthur took out a piece of meat after tying Valerian up. After that, Valerian woke up and the situation played out like before.

Now back in the present, Arthur looked at Valerian while he himself was checking out his status.

’To think there is someone even more overpowered than me around here, and he’s the same age. What are the chances?’

As Valerian cycled through expressions while checking out his new status, Arthur went back to the campfire, but the meat he put there was already burned. With a sad expression, he turned back to Valerian.

"You want to eat? Or put on some clothes first? You weren’t wearing any spatial rings, so I guess you have to take some from me."

That took Valerian out of marveling at his new status and he turned to Arthur.

"No, I’m fine, I’m not hungry. And I will make my own clothes when I have the mana, so feel yourself lucky for you can continue to stare at me until then."

A vein popped on Arthur’s forehead at the shameless narcissism.

"Then starve for all I care."

Valerian stood up and walked to the campfire, sitting down opposite from Arthur, which was definitely strange considering that he was still naked and didn’t bother to cover up.

While Arthur tried to ignore the naked boy sitting across from him cross-legged, Valerian looked at Arthur with steady eyes.

"So you saw my status. Wouldn’t it be fair if you at least told me how?"

Arthur looked Valerian reluctantly in the eyes, clearly not wanting to tell, but after a few seconds he sighed.

"I guess. But before that, let me tell you something else and you have to promise me you won’t tell another soul, Valerian von Astrea."

Now that caught Valerian’s interest. Sure, the status screen of another person was quite personal, but to have such a strong reaction meant that there is something else.

"Sure, you saved my life so I owe you. I won’t tell anyone."

Answering with a satisfied look, Arthur began.

"First off, what do you think about reincarnation?"
