Ruoxi watched the Shadow Demon closely - assassins were no fun. "And what’s that?" He asked lightly.
"You can’t eat the Vampire." Asael said pointedly.
Ruoxi expected this but he laughed anyway, it was a rough sound like he didn’t do it often. "You’re both incredibly bothered by what I do with the Vampire when you want nothing more than your summons being undone."
Kath’tan had been quiet this whole while, the Fiend had taken the most comfortable spot in the room other than the bed. He had gone too long without sleeping, it was beginning to tell on him.
"It has nothing to do with the summons and everything to do with his foolishness." He grumbled, half lying over the large sofa.
Ruoxi remained unaffected by their requests. "Wouldn’t my response be ingenuine?" He asked lightly, "Seeing as you will both leave eventually."
Two pairs of glaring gazes focused on him and he had to bite back the urge to laugh again. It was easier to laugh now that he had the near certainty that he wouldn’t return to his gilded cage by means of a fluke.
He didn’t laugh but his mirth showed in his gold eyes, it was one of the few genuine expressions he had shown since he was summoned.
Ruoxi wasn’t hung up on the Vampire, as a matter of fact, he was indebted to him for saving him even though it was a mistake. But his hands were tied...
"...But yes, I accept the condition." He went on.
Asael quieted down, it had been obvious, yet he hadn’t considered it. He had to leave eventually, if it wasn’t when they arrived at Alderth, then he would do so by eliminating his target and having his summons undone.
Despite his seeming willingness to keep accompanying the Vampire, he was always going to leave. He glanced at the drunk Vampire dead to the world, perhaps he should have left at the first chance he got.
Kath’tan glared at the Incubus, the rush of anger sharpened his senses dulled by sleep. The anger quickly cooled but he remained seated upright.
He had far bigger things to worry about, yet anger only came easily to him when it had to do with the foolish Vampire.
Perhaps he was resigned to death, however shameful a death it would be. He had dreamed of dying on the battleground, then his achievements would be taken back to his father who would finally give him the acknowledgement he had always craved.
Kath’tan fell back on the sofa, too exhausted to be bothered about the discomfort. The bed in his rooms were about big enough to accommodate him but he didn’t move from the sofa, his eyes getting heavier.
He hadn’t thought about his mother since he was a child, he didn’t know her but he knew he had to have one. Asking his father had gotten him a dagger to the face so he never dared to again.
As he fell into the cold, unwelcome arms of sleep, he still didn’t think of her. They would always be on either side of the battle lines when they met, the only emotion they could hold for each other was rage.
"The Fiend is asleep," Ruoxi pointed out, a knowing look in his gold eyes.
Asael was unperturbed, "You should focus on your troubles. Shadow Demon poison couldn’t kill the Vampire, if you still need more proof, you can get it from the source."
Ruoxi crossed his arms, not taking even a single piece of his outfit off, not even his coat. "You’re a strange assassin."
Asael didn’t humor him, Kath’tan’s state of wakefulness had no impact on his mission. If anything, the Fiend was borderline taunting him by choosing to sleep in his presence.
Silence settled over the room, the fireplace crackling heartily. Neither had any interest in conversation, unwilling to share their secrets.
The silence stretched for hours until it was broken by Dulce groggily sitting up. "My apologies for troubling you all," He was apologizing before he was fully lucid, the words slow and soft from sleep.
Asael and Ruoxi looked over, the only two awake. The Vampire’s hair was a bird’s nest, his skin still tinged red.
"I shouldn’t have drunk so much," He mumbled, yawning. Drooping red eyes scanned the room only to stop on Kath’tan, shock startling him fully awake.
"Is he dead?" He got off the bed in alarm, approaching the Fiend.
Asael stared into the fire place, his cold features perfectly hiding his displeasure. "He’s just asleep."
He was forced to look away from the fire place when he heard rustling, looking back in time to see the frail Vampire easily hauling the sleeping Fiend to the bed.
Dulce moved him carefully although the effects of being blood drunk had yet to clear up completely. The bed was big enough to accommodate the Demon, his imposing figure looking completely out of place on the bed.
"Are neither of you going to sleep?" He asked the others, rubbing his red eyes.
"I’ll stay up and keep watch over you," Ruoxi said pleasantly.
Dulce forced himself to stop slouching at that, having a much harder time keeping his droopy eyes open. "You don’t have to bother about that. Vampires don’t sleep, I’ll keep watch." He said bravely while cutting a very sleepy figure.
Ruoxi’s faint smile widened, the faintest spark in his gold eyes. "I’m not sleepy yet, get comfortable for when I do sleep."
Dulce easily agreed, wandering to the sofa he had to drag the Fiend out of. He fit on it better, curling up on his side, cushions scattered around him.
He also didn’t take off his overcoat or cravat, almost immediately falling into a trance.
Ruoxi’s smile fell off his face, he leaned back against the silk sofa, sighing. "It would certainly be a much more pleasant time when you’re both gone."
Asael didn’t satisfy him with a reaction, his gaze drifting from the sleeping Vampire to the gentle red glow of the dying hearth.
