Chapter 35
.
.
The door to Jiang Li’s apartment slowly opened, and Luo Xin walked in, her brows still furrowed in anger. But that anger quickly melted into concern when she saw the small lump on the couch.
Sighing softly, Luo Xin closed the door and began cleaning up in silence, not saying a word. After thirty minutes, she walked over to the lump on the couch, her eyes narrowing with concern as she sat down on the floor beside it, holding a cup of herbal tea.
Jiang Li’s blond hair was messy, his smooth, milky-white face now pale as paper. Dark circles lingered beneath his red-rimmed eyes as he stared blankly at the television, where a Chinese drama played.
At the sight, Luo Xin sighed.
"For how long, Jiang Li?" she suddenly asked.
Jiang Li turned his head toward her, his honey-brown eyes narrowing in confusion.
"What do you mean...?" he asked.
Luo Xin looked down, tightening her grip on the cup.
"You’ve missed ten lectures. You haven’t stepped outside for fifteen days... fifteen days! Do you know how worried Guo Chen is? How long are you going to keep this up?" Her voice started low but gradually rose.
Seeing his gaze drop, Luo Xin sighed again. She handed him the tea and helped him sit up straighter. He looked so sick it hurt, as if all the life had been drained out of him.
"I don’t want to keep this up either..." Jiang Li said, holding the warm cup tightly.
The problem was that he was afraid.
Afraid of what would happen if he stepped outside and suddenly ran into Shen Yu.
Afraid of what would happen if he met Kim Teahyun.
Afraid that Shen Yu would apologize.
Because apologies meant regret.
And Jiang Li wasn’t sure which hurt more—
being hated...
or being pitied.
It was all too frightening.
"What happened, Li-er?" Luo Xin asked, her voice soft as she placed a hand on his shoulder.
When her voice was like that... when her concern was so clear in her silver eyes... how could he keep it in?
With shaky hands, Jiang Li took a sip of the tea, set it down on the table, and clutched the blanket.
"Did... you buy it...?" he asked quietly.
Luo Xin sighed, stood up, and walked to the kitchenette where she had placed the grocery bag. After unpacking some of the groceries—having noticed how empty his kitchen was—she took out the pregnancy test he had asked for and returned to the living room, handing it to him.
"Are you like this because you think you’re pregnant... or did he force you?" Luo Xin asked, her eyes narrowing with rising anger.
She knew how unlikely the second option was.
Jiang Li had chased Shen Yu for mouths.
He had willingly walked into dangerous places just to be close to him.
If Shen Yu had truly forced him...
Jiang Li wouldn’t be mourning.
He would be shattered.
How could that man have forced him?
So what was it...?
"Luo Xin... how does a rut feel?" Jiang Li suddenly asked.
Luo Xin frowned and sat beside him.
"It’s like drowning in heat... with a need so strong it drives you insane. Reason disappears, and even before that, you’re already slipping during pre-rut... but everything changes when you’re fully in rut," she said.
Jiang Li stared at her before lowering his gaze again.
"What happens when you’re in rut...?" he asked quietly.
Luo Xin rested her arm on the couch.
"You can’t control your body. Sometimes... you do things you don’t want to do. Because when we enter rut, we’re not in control anymore—our Alpha is," she said, smiling faintly, though there was no happiness in it.
No control.
Did that mean... to Shen Yu... Jiang Li had truly been nothing but a mistake?
A quiet chuckle escaped his lips as tears streamed down his face.
Seeing this, Luo Xin sighed and pulled him into a hug.
So it really was what she thought.
"Was he in rut...? He didn’t assault you?" Luo Xin asked.
Jiang Li nodded as he cried.
"Are you okay... physically, I mean?" she asked.
Jiang Li shook his head, sobbing, before slowly pulling away from the hug, hiccuping.
"My body doesn’t feel right... I can’t eat, and I keep vomiting. I’m scared, Xinxin... what if... what if I..." he trailed off.
Luo Xin frowned deeply. His sobs felt like knives stabbing into her heart.
"Breathe... please, just breathe..." she said, holding his shoulders.
She couldn’t even use calming pheromones on him—he wouldn’t respond to them.
"Did you take birth control pills the day after?" she asked.
Jiang Li nodded, still crying.
Luo Xin sighed, then bent down to pick up the pregnancy test that had fallen and placed it back into his hands, her own trembling slightly.
"No matter what happens... just know that Guo Chen and I will be by your side, okay?" she said softly.
After a moment, Jiang Li nodded and stood up, his legs unsteady as he made his way to the bathroom.
Luo Xin was left pacing the living room. To steady herself, she drank the herbal tea she had made for him and pulled her phone from her hoodie pocket, sending a message to Guo Chen.
After twenty minutes, she couldn’t wait any longer.
She walked to the bathroom and knocked.
"Li-er... are you okay? Is everything alright?"
Silence.
After a moment, she couldn’t take it anymore and pushed the door open.
"Li-er!"
Inside, Jiang Li stood frozen, staring at the pregnancy test in his hands, tears streaming silently down his face.
The sight was heartbreaking.
Luo Xin took a steadying breath before walking toward him.
He didn’t move.
As she stepped closer, she saw the test in his trembling hands—
And froze.
The question died on her lips. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
There were two... lines.
