Qian Yixiu looked at Liang Jinzhao gratefully. She definitely believed that Liang Jinzhao asking Steward Wong to come wasn’t just to serve them.

This big guy’s intelligence was as high as his height, and his thoughts were much deeper than those of the two young men, Song Huaijin and Zhang Yang; he was cunningly looking for supporters for his family. She had always wondered why Steward Wong was so good to her family, but now she was beginning to understand.

After Liang Jinzhao and the others played with Monkey for a while, they became interested in the two little dogs under the eaves of the eastern wing room and got up to walk over. She let them soak the glutinous rice to prepare for cooking, start some dough with the white flour, and clean and wash the vegetables. She herself cleaned the grapes and bayberries and took them to entertain the guests.

Qian Yixiu was delighted to see so many good things.

They started by slicing the watermelons and had Wong Liang take them out to treat the young masters. They then busied themselves with soaking red beans, cooking lotus roots, preparing pumpkin, and so on.

Lady Wu had returned as well, bringing back everything Qian Yixiu had asked her to buy.

Looking over the ingredients, Qian Yixiu decided to make vegetarian buns, red bean cakes, shredded potato pancakes, pumpkin cakes, sesame balls, and plum blossom cookies as a few of the vegetarian pastries. She would also prepare bean curd stick and herb rolls, stir-fried dual-color mushrooms, vegetarian minced meat eggplant pies, pearl mushroom balls, honeyed glutinous rice lotus root, garlic fern stems, and shredded sugar potatoes among other vegetarian dishes, and to finish, she planned to make a three-color pearl dessert soup.

They knew how to make some of the pastries and dishes, so she let them start on those, while Qian Yixiu, Lady Wu, and Qian Manxia worked together on the ones they didn’t know how to make.

Aside from the honeyed glutinous rice lotus root and plum blossom cookies, which were more labor-intensive, the rest were easy to make.

Madam Wong Liang was puzzled to see several adults willingly following the orders of this young girl.

Qian Mandie asked with some astonishment, “Yixiu, how do you know about so many delicacies?”

Qian Yixiu said, “Some of these dishes were made by the cooks at Old Master Zhang’s house the last time we had a meal there.

I liked them a lot, so I asked a few more questions. And two of the dishes I came up with on my own, so I’m not sure if they will turn out to be tasty or not.”

Lady Wu knew her granddaughter was precocious and nodded in agreement when she heard her explanation.

After ensuring everyone had started on their tasks and giving clear instructions to Lady Wu, she went to the left wing to check on Cheng Yue. Her mother had rushed into the room before the guests entered the yard and had closed all the doors and windows, leaving the small room oppressively hot and stuffy.

As soon as Qian Yixiu entered the room, she was hit by a wave of hot air and said, “Mom, it’s too hot. Let’s crack open a window.”

She first gave her half a bowl of sour mildew soup to drink, then had her lie down, picked up a large palm-leaf fan, and began fanning her. Seeing that she was feeling somewhat better, Qian Yixiu suggested inviting Zhang Yang in to take her pulse.

Cheng Yue didn’t like strangers coming near her, especially strange men. But she had been secretly watching the young men in the courtyard, and for some reason, she felt an unusual kinship with them, a sensation in her heart that was hard to describe.

Hearing that one of the young men would come to see her, she readily nodded in agreement.

Qian Yixiu, pleased by her mother’s cooperation, ran out and pulled Zhang Yang aside, asking him to take her mother’s pulse.
