- Chapter 1: That one comment
The morning was unremarkable.
I made coffee, opened my laptop, pulled up the music label brief and worked through it for two hours without stopping.
Clean focus.
The kind that only comes when you have slept badly and your brain skips past anxious and lands somewhere flat and functional.
By 9 AM I had a first draft of the logo concept. By 10 AM I had sent it.
I was feeling almost normal when I opened my portfolio site to check if the commission inquiry from last night had replied.
There was a new follower notification sitting at the top of the dashboard.
Portfolio sites do not get followers the way social platforms do.
Mine had a follow feature because the template came with one but in two years of running the site I had accumulated exactly 34 followers, all of them either clients, fellow designers or people I had met at industry events.
I knew most of them by name.
The new follower had no name.
The profile was a small glowing orb. Pale. Round.
The same one from last night.
I sat back in my chair.
The account had found my streaming profile, sent me a message, and then gone looking and found my professional portfolio.
Two separate platforms. Two separate corners of my online presence that had no obvious connection unless you were deliberately searching the name Ethan Cruxs after finding it somewhere else.
Like a fan forum thread with a link posted under the caption found him.
I blocked the account on the portfolio site.
Then I went back to the streaming platform and blocked it there too. Then I sat at my desk for a moment with my coffee going cold beside me.
It was probably nothing.
A fan being weird.
The internet was full of people being weird and most of them had no follow-through.
They sent one strange message, got no response, moved on to the next thing.
I had done the right thing by not replying.
Blocking was the correct move.
This was already over.
I picked up the coffee, realized it was cold, and went to reheat it.
The rest of the morning passed without incident.
Marcus called at 1 PM to tell me the clip had cleared 400,000 views and that someone on a podcast had briefly mentioned it while talking about V-Tuber culture.
I told him that was insane. He agreed. We talked for twenty minutes about nothing related to any of it and I felt better by the time we hung up.
I went to a coffee shop at 3 PM because my apartment was starting to feel like a container and I did better work with ambient noise around me.
The place two blocks from my building, small and warm, exposed brick and the smell of espresso and someone in the corner playing guitar through tiny speakers on their laptop.
I ordered, found a table near the window, opened my files.
For two hours I worked without looking up.
At some point the light outside changed from afternoon to early evening and I realized I had not eaten since morning. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
I packed up, walked home, made food, ate it standing at the counter the way I always did when I was still half inside a project.
Then I made the mistake of checking the fan forum again.
The thread had a new post near the bottom of page four.
Someone saying that Lumi had just announced she was going live tonight at 9 PM and that she had hinted on her community page that she had something she wanted to say to her community.
The replies under that post were already running hot with speculation.
I closed the forum.
I watched a video about typography trends for forty minutes.
At 8:58 PM I opened the stream.
The waiting screen was her usual pastel setup. Soft music. Little animated stars drifting across the background.
The chat was already moving fast, people excited, people asking what she was going to say, people just sending rows of her emote because that was what they did.
At 9:01 PM she went live.
"Hi everyone." Her voice came in warm and clear. The avatar was bright, the bow on her head animated slightly with each movement.
"I’m so happy you’re all here tonight."
"lumiLOVE ! lumiLOVE ! lumiLOVE ! "
She laughed at something in the chat. Did a little segment about her day. Talked about a game she had been playing. Normal stream. Easy energy.
The chat settled into its rhythm.
Then she paused.
"Okay," she said. "I want to talk about something."
The chat slowed.
"A lot of you have been sending me clips and threads about a comment someone left during my last stream."
She folded her hands together on screen, the gesture small and deliberate.
"And I want to be honest with you all because I think you deserve honesty."
Silence in the chat. Full attention.
"He wasn’t wrong."
The chat exploded instantly.
"WAIT ,WHAT !"
"lumi???"
"she did NOT just say that"
"He wasn’t wrong," she said again, calmly, over the noise.
"Smiling for two hours straight is not easy. It never has been." She paused.
"There are days when things happen. Hard things. Things I don’t talk about on stream because this space isn’t about my hard days. This space is about yours."
The chat went completely quiet.
"I smile because a lot of you come here after long days. After bad news. After the kind of exhaustion that doesn’t go away after one night of sleep.
" Her voice was steady. No performance in it. Just weight.
"If my smile is the one moment in your day that feels light, then I will smile until my face gives out.
Because that is what this means to me."
"she is going to make me cry"
" LUMI YOU ARE AN ANGEL"
"we love you lumi"
"#SmileOnLumi"
"she smiles so WE can smile oh my god"
"i am not okay"
"protecting her at all costs"
The chat was moving faster than I had ever seen it move.
The donation alerts started firing one after another, names I recognized from past streams, all with messages in the same vein.
"We see you! We love you.! Keep smiling."
#SmileOnLumi was already sitting in the trending sidebar.
She laughed softly at something in the donations. Pressed a hand to her face.
"You’re all going to make me actually cry and then I won’t be smiling at all so stop it."
More chat. More hearts. More people tagging friends.
I sat at my desk watching all of it with a feeling I could not immediately name.
She had taken the clip, taken my comment, and turned it into a moment about her fans.
Not defensively. Not attacking me.
She had simply reframed the entire thing until I was irrelevant to it and she was a martyr made of pastel colors and good intentions.
Her fans were not angry at me anymore. They had forgotten about me completely. They were too busy crying at their screens.
It was the cleanest pivot I had ever seen.
I almost closed the stream.
Then she looked up.
Not at the chat. Not at the donation bar. Directly at the camera. The avatar’s eyes centered and stilled in a way they had not been still the entire stream.
"To anyone watching tonight who isn’t sure if they belong here." A small smile. Slow. "You do. I see you. I’ve always seen you."
Chills!
Not the good kind.
The kind that starts at the back of your neck and moves downward and by the time you register it your whole spine has already reacted.
She was not talking to her general audience. The framing was wrong. The tone was wrong.
Her whole stream she had spoken to the plural, to the chat and the community and the you all.
This was singular. This was aimed. This was the same feeling as the first night when she turned to the camera and said my username like she was tasting it.
I see you. I’ve always seen you.
The chat was going wild. People taking it as a general message of inclusion.
People making it their bio quote already. #SmileOnLumi climbing the trends.
I closed the laptop.
The room felt different with the screen off. Smaller. Quieter.
I walked to the window. The street below was normal. A couple walking home from probably a date.
A food delivery guy locking his bike. Streetlights turning on one by one as the sky finished darkening.
Normal city. Normal Friday.
I pulled the curtains.
