Lilith tilted her head back, giving Cassian easier access to her neck. Her fingers found their way into his hair, which had long since come loose from how neatly it had been combed earlier in the day.
Lilith laid still as Cassian pressed his lips to her skin, no doubt intending to leave marks he assumed would embarrass her come morning.
What he didn’t know was that Lilith would wear them without a second thought. It was their wedding night. The entire castle already knew what they were doing.
The guests who had lingered were trying to make sense of the pair. Since there was an audience, she and Cassian may as well give them something to think about.
She felt the dress slip completely from her shoulders. She did not attempt to cover herself. Lilith had never needed to hide from anyone’s gaze, and she was not about to start now.
The way Cassian looked at her confirmed she had every reason to feel that way.
"Must we commission a portrait for you to stare at in your own time? Your attention flatters me, but you have very little time before I lose interest. You have already done a fine job of exciting me, so I suggest you see it through," Lilith said, watching his every move.
"I’ll allow you to get away with this for now," Cassian said, settling himself between her legs as he pulled the dress down and away from her body.
Once she was undressed, he leaned back to finish what Lilith had started, removing his own trousers and setting them aside.
Lilith lay beneath him, watching as he stripped for her.
"For a woman who claimed I was lacking, you are biting your lip, Lilith," Cassian said, the satisfaction evident in his voice.
"It is the poor light that confuses you, Cassian. Now, enough talking. Given the way you have been behaving these past days, I expected you would have very little patience left," said Lilith.
Cassian discarded the last of his clothing, revealing himself to her fully.
.
Lilith watched without flinching. "There it is. Not so shy after all."
"Lilith, no man wants that particular part of himself mocked," Cassian replied.
"How very unfortunate for men in general. I do so enjoy a well-placed insult," Lilith countered.
Cassian leaned forward, lowering his lips to the valley of her chest, pressing a kiss there. "You thoroughly deserve everything coming to you tonight. You smell of roses," he murmured against her skin.
His hands came to her waist, and she flinched slightly at first. His palms were cool against the warmth of her body.
Whilst Cassian kept her attention with his mouth moving across the soft flesh of her chest, his right hand slipped quietly between her thighs, his finger pressing gently against the heat waiting there.
Lilith had enough experience not to be easily startled by pleasure.
Knowing that only reminded Cassian of Michael. He had no right to feel it. He too had taken lovers, but the thought of Lilith with another man, giving that part of herself to someone who had not known what she was worth, did not sit well with him.
If whatever force had granted him a second chance had reached further back in time, he would have found her sooner. He would have been her first, and she would have been his.
He had to settle for being her last. And even if Lilith tried to run from him, he would not let her go. In every lifetime she existed, he would find her. He would always protect her.
Lilith shifted beneath him as he pressed deeper with his finger, her body responding before she could decide whether to let it.
Cassian had intended to take the night slowly and had even considered skipping the intimacy altogether. But he had fallen too completely into the need to have her close, to feel her warmth against him, even if the whole thing had started as a scheme on her part.
Lilith’s back arched as the pleasure came quickly. She met his gaze and caught the change in his expression.
Cassian noticed her watching, and the expression shifted, settling back into the present.
Lilith found herself wondering, not for the first time, why he so often looked like a man carrying a story he had never told anyone.
The thought left as Cassian’s hand moved again. Her mouth fell open slightly. His name rose in her throat, but wasn’t heard as she refused to give him the satisfaction so easily.
If she did, he might stop, and she was not ready for the fun to end so soon.
Lilith wanted to wipe the grin from his face, but not right now to interrupt what was building within her between her thighs.
Lilith closed her eyes, her teeth biting into her lower lip.
"Is this sufficient evidence of my experience, Lilith? How rude of you not to look at me whilst you clench around my finger. All this time, it was never genuine anger. You simply needed someone who could give you what you wanted," Cassian said, watching her body move beneath him.
For this moment, her guard was entirely down, but Cassian knew better than to push his luck. Lilith could shift in an instant and produce a hidden dagger before he had time to register the change.
"This was your plan from the beginning. The seduction. That is why you chose that garment," Cassian muttered, his finger continued to move, driving her to her orgasm.
Lilith’s eyes opened, and she sat up slowly. "Didn’t you choose it? I had selected something else entirely. I was told it was a gift from you."
Cassian had played no part whatsoever in preparing anything for the wedding night. "I left all of that to you. Someone told you I sent it?"
He pulled his hand away as Lilith reached for the garment, lifting it from the foot of the bed.
"I was told it came from you. I was going to use it to my advantage," Lilith said, turning the fabric over in her hands to study it.
At first glance, nothing seemed out of place, which was precisely why she had put it on without question. However, as Lilith looked more carefully, the cloth began to feel familiar in a way that turned her stomach.
She knew this fabric. She knew exactly where she had seen it before.
"Virgil is in the castle," Lilith said, certain he prepared this.
