The western edge of the kelp forest opened into a vast blue expanse. The current ran faster here, a steady push from the deeper water that carried the taste of salt and distance. Gray hovered at the boundary between the familiar fronds and the open unknown, his tentacles extended to read the water.
In the distance, silver shapes darted through the blue.
Their bodies were sleek and tapered, built for speed, their fins catching the faint ambient light and scattering it like mirrors. They moved in loose schools of five or six, never staying still, never lingering in one place for more than a heartbeat.
’This is going to be annoying.’
He pulsed toward the nearest school, keeping his Bioluminescent Pulse dim and his movements slow. The Runners noticed him immediately. Instead of scattering, they simply shifted position, sliding six feet to the left with an effortless flick of their tails. Gray adjusted course only to find them shifting again, this time ten feet away. He hadn’t even closed half the distance.
’Okay. Stealth isn’t going to work here.’
He tried Toxin Cloud, deploying it ahead of the school’s trajectory. The Runners saw the disturbance in the water and split formation, flowing around the venom sphere like a river around a stone. Not a single one took damage.
’They’re too fast. I can’t catch them, I can’t trap them, and they see everything coming.’
He tried for nearly an hour. Each attempt was more frustrating than the last. He’d drift close, and the Runners would flick away. He’d deploy Toxin Cloud, and they’d flow around it. He’d try to corner one against the kelp line, and it would simply accelerate past him, a silver blur that left him bobbing in its wake. Once, he managed to graze a straggler with the edge of his Toxin Cloud and the Runner shot away with a burst of speed that made his nineteen SPD look like he was standing still.
’This isn’t working. I need a different approach.’
He withdrew to the kelp line and watched the Runners from a distance, studying their patterns. The schools moved in loose circles around the western edge, feeding on smaller fish and plankton drifting in the current. The fastest Runners stayed at the center of the schools. The slower ones hovered at the edges.
’Target the weak ones. Find the stragglers.’
He circled wide around the main schools and approached from the open water side, where the Runners weren’t looking. Near the edge of the feeding grounds, he found what he was looking for: a single Silver-Fin Runner, smaller than the others, its left fin torn and ragged. It swam with a slight wobble, compensating for the damaged fin with harder strokes of its tail.
[SILVER-FIN RUNNER (INJURED) — Level 6]
HP: 35 / 45
Status: Crippled Fin (-30% Speed)
’Perfect. You’re coming with me.’
He approached from below, using the dark water as cover. The injured Runner didn’t notice him until he was almost within Toxin Cloud range. Then its lateral line caught his vibration, and it bolted—but the damaged fin dragged, and its acceleration was sluggish compared to the others. Gray pulsed after it, nineteen SPD against its reduced speed, and gained ground.
He deployed Toxin Cloud ahead of its path. The Runner tried to swerve, but the damaged fin cost it precious milliseconds. Its tail caught the edge of the venom sphere.
[TOXIN CLOUD — 7 DAMAGE]
[SILVER-FIN RUNNER — HP: 28 / 45]
’Got you!’
He pulsed harder, closing the gap. The Runner thrashed, its damaged fin fluttering uselessly, and Gray deployed a second Toxin Cloud directly on top of it.
[TOXIN CLOUD — 8 DAMAGE]
[TOXIN CLOUD — 7 DAMAGE]
[SILVER-FIN RUNNER — HP: 13 / 45]
The Runner’s speed dropped sharply. It was dying, its movements growing erratic, its sleek body beginning to drift. Gray reached out with his tentacles to finish it—
And something shot past him so fast he barely registered it.
The Runner was gone. Ripped away in a blur of motion that left Gray spinning in the water, his tentacles flailing. He steadied himself and scanned the blue expanse. He spotted a fish there, already devouring his kill. It had already torn the Runner in half and was swallowing the second piece with quick, efficient bites.
It was small. Maybe five inches long. Its body was a brilliant electric blue, so bright it seemed to glow, with a single dark stripe running from snout to tail. Its fins were oversized for its body, almost wing-like, and they beat with a constant, hummingbird-fast rhythm. It finished the Runner, turned to face Gray, and hovered there. Watching him.
[BLUE-STREAK CHROMIS — Level 7]
HP: 30 / 30
Threat Level: Minimal
« Analysis »
A small, highly agile reef fish known for its exceptional speed and maneuverability. Blue-Streak Chromis possess oversized pectoral fins that allow them to change direction instantly and hover in place with perfect stability. Their reaction time is among the fastest documented in mid-depth fish species.
Behavior: Non-aggressive. Primarily feeds on plankton and small crustaceans. Known for playful, almost mischievous behavior toward larger creatures. Will steal food from predators and retreat before they can react.
Weakness: Extremely fragile if caught. Low HP and no natural armor.
Gray stared at the Chromis. The Chromis stared back. Its oversized pectoral fins beat in a constant blur, holding it perfectly stationary in the water. Then it did something unexpected. It darted forward, stopped inches from Gray’s bell, and flicked its tail. A tiny vortex of water spun from the fin and splashed against his bell margin—a wet, deliberate, unmistakably cheeky gesture. Then it zipped backward to its original position, fins still blurring, and waited.
’...Did that fish just splash me?’
The Chromis darted forward again. This time it circled him in a tight loop, a blue streak that left a faint afterimage in his vision. It stopped in front of him, facing him directly. Its mouth opened and closed three times in rapid succession, like it was laughing.
’It’s messing with me. The stupid little fish is messing with me.’
