The study was older than the Sanctum. Orin didn’t light the lamps. The glow from his armor was enough, gold on stone maps spread across a table. Troop positions. Supply lines.
He set the greatsword against the wall. A deliberate gesture.
Eloy stayed by the door. The ankle was a wall of heat from foot to knee. The suppression field’s cold still clung to his bones.
"You’re not what Caldwell described." Orin’s back was still turned. "The reports said disposable asset. Unstable exposure. Recommended termination within forty-eight hours of Sphere contact. That was twelve days ago. You should be dead."
"I get that a lot."
Orin turned. Older in the dimness. The weight of four centuries settled into the lines around his eyes.
"The Compact permits one suspension for inquiry. The duel is paused, not withdrawn." He stepped closer. "Caldwell’s team documented seventeen fatalities at the containment site. No partial successes. No exceptions. You are the eighteenth contact. You should be the eighteenth death. Why aren’t you?"
Eloy’s thumb pressed against his collarbone. The glyph was cold. "The Bearer died in a cave under the Caldera seven days ago. The fragment attached because I was the only compatible conduit in range. I didn’t choose it. But I’m not giving it back."
"The fragment bonded to a Rank E adventurer with no registered affinity markers and no family history of mana deviation." Orin’s voice flattened. "Do you understand how impossible that is?"
"Yes."
"And?"
"I’m a speedrunner." The words came out flat. "Where I’m from, that means you learn every frame of a fight. Every startup. Every recovery window. You die and restart until the patterns become instinct. The fragment latched onto my neural architecture. Pattern recognition at speeds the human brain shouldn’t handle."
Orin’s hand moved to the table and rested there. "You’re describing combat intuition refined beyond anything I’ve seen in four centuries."
"I’m describing repetition. Thousands of repetitions against opponents that don’t exist in this world."
Orin picked up a parchment from the table. Glyph-stamped. Eloy recognized the cipher from the ravine.
"The seventeen-signature ring orbiting my Sanctum. Caldwell’s formation. He wanted me to execute you here and bury the evidence in a sanctioned death." He set it down. "He knew the Sphere fragment survived. He filed a fugitive warrant so I would kill the proof."
"He played you."
"He played me." Orin’s eyes found Eloy’s. "That’s a truth I will settle with him personally, but it doesn’t change the duel. The Compact requires resolution. Suspension buys time for inquiry. It doesn’t erase the challenge." The gold light of his armor brightened. "You survived four exchanges. You parried a Hero-class strike. You positioned yourself behind me in a maneuver no one has attempted. You gave me answers that don’t fit any category I have."
"Then what happens now?"
"Now you show me whether the answers are true."
Orin reached the door. Pulled it open.
"The duel resumes at dawn. You have until then to prepare. Use it wisely."
The door closed.
Eloy pulled up his HUD.
[ SENTINEL RING — SEVENTEEN ELEMENTS — HOLDING FORMATION ]
[ DUEL STATUS — SUSPENDED — RESUMES DAWN ]
[ CALDERA’S EDGE DURABILITY — 78% — PASSIVE REPAIR ACTIVE ]
[ ESTIMATED FULL REPAIR — 6 HOURS ]
[SpeedrunGod]: six hours to full repair. dawn is in seven. he’ll hit 100%.
[coldfront44]: rep timer optimization. and orin didn’t even use his full kit.
Eloy pushed off the table and limped toward the door.
Isolde was waiting in the corridor.
She stood with her back to the stone wall. The document from Kael was folded in her hand. Her eyes tracked him as he came through the door.
"Not withdrawn. Suspended for inquiry. Resumes at dawn."
Her jaw moved. A millimeter. "He gave you a timeline."
"Seven hours."
"It’s a clock." She pushed off the wall. "Maya decoded a Compact clause. If Orin activates the suppression field, the duel reduces to a set exchange count. Survive that, and the duel becomes a draw by technicality. Defender wins."
"A draw frees Valen regardless."
"Fugitive revocation still proceeds. Orin doesn’t lose face because the Compact produced the outcome instead of a concession."
Eloy leaned against the wall. The leg was screaming.
"You read the Compact in three hours."
"Kael had a copy. Maya found the clause in forty minutes." A pause. "We’re not helpless while you recover."
"I need to wrap the ankle. The Edge needs six hours."
"I’ll find Maya. We’ll map the courtyard’s blind spots." She turned. Stopped. "Orin has fought every combat style in the kingdom’s record. He’s never fought someone who treats combat as data."
She walked away.
Dawn came gray and cold.
The clouds had thinned overnight but the light that reached the courtyard was the color of old steel. Guards lined the perimeter in the same positions, the same grip on their weapons.
Orin Goldenshield stood at the far end. The greatsword was in his hand. The blade caught the gray light and held it.
The golden boundary shimmered into existence.
[ DUEL — RESUMED ]
[ PHASE — COMBAT — FULL ESCALATION AUTHORIZED ]
Eloy stepped past the boundary line.
Orin didn’t speak. He moved. The first strike was faster than yesterday. No windup. No announcement. The greatsword cut a diagonal line and Eloy’s dodge was a hair from being a hit.
[ COMBAT LOG — DODGE — FRAME-SLOPPY — MARGIN 2 FRAMES ]
The follow-up came before the first missed. Horizontal. Wider arc. Eloy dropped. The blade passed over his head.
The third was a thrust. Fast. Eloy twisted and the tip grazed his shirt.
This was the real Orin. No testing. No measuring. Four centuries of training stacked into a single muscle memory.
[ CALDERA’S EDGE DURABILITY — 100% ]
[ ACTIVATING — GUARDIAN’S PARRY ]
The construct blade flared blue. He caught the greatsword’s flat. The impact travelled up his arm and the stone under his foot cracked.
He held.
Orin’s eyes met his. "You were serious about the repetition."
Eloy kicked off the stone. Momentum carried him sideways. The greatsword followed. Orin had adjusted.
[ PHASE TRANSITION — HERO’S AUTHORITY — ACTIVE ]
[ EFFECT — AREA SUPPRESSION FIELD — ALL NON-HERO ENERGY SIGNATURES ]
Gold light flooded the courtyard. The pressure hit Eloy’s chest like a second gravity. Caldera’s Edge flickered.
He’d prepared for this.
The courtyard map was in his head. Every flagstone. Every blind spot Isolde had identified. He moved before the field stabilized. Diagonal. Toward the eastern wall where the boundary seal was weakest — the Compact didn’t allow suppression within three feet of the boundary.
The suppression field dropped by 40%.
[ SUPPRESSION FIELD — LOCAL DROP — BOUNDARY ZONE ]
Orin’s head turned. "You found the gap."
"Someone else found it."
The greatsword came again. The field made it heavier. Not slower enough. Eloy sidestepped and the strike clipped his shoulder.
[PraiseTheSun]: boundary zone strat. that’s a designer oversight.
[ghostrunner_x]: orin’s going to close that gap. eloy has maybe three exchanges.
Orin advanced. The suppression field tightened. The boundary gap was closing.
Eloy had two choices. Stay in the shrinking safe zone and lose mobility. Or move into the full field and risk the Edge.
He moved into the full field.
[ CALDERA’S EDGE — SUPPRESSED — 91% → 23% ]
[ WARNING — CONSTRUCT STABILITY — CRITICAL ]
The pressure hit properly. His knees buckled.
Orin stopped. "You moved into the suppression field voluntarily. The gap would have sustained you for another six exchanges."
"You said the gap was going to close. You wanted me to stay there so you could tighten it around me. If I stayed I’d lose mobility. If I moved I’d lose the Edge. I chose the Edge."
"You anticipated a two-layer trap."
"I read the pattern."
The greatsword came down. Eloy caught it on his forearm. The construct blade was dim but the structure held. Barely. His arm went numb.
[ CALDERA’S EDGE — DURABILITY — 18% ]
[ KINETIC LOAD — OVERLOAD — STRUCTURAL WARNING ]
"You’re going to break the Edge."
"I know."
"And you’re doing it anyway."
"Because the alternative is losing." Eloy’s voice came through gritted teeth. "If I keep the Edge but lose positioning, you take my legs. If I trade the Edge to stay mobile, I lose the only weapon that can parry you. I outlast your resources. Then I outlast your second wind. Then I outlast your will."
The Edge shattered.
Blue fragments exploded. Eloy’s arm dropped. Unarmed. No guard. The greatsword was free.
Orin stepped back. The suppression field flickered. Withdrew.
"The Compact permits a brief pause between phases. You have five minutes." He turned. Walked to the center of the courtyard. Planted the greatsword in the stone.
[ CALDERA’S EDGE — DESTROYED ]
[ PASSIVE REPAIR — 12 HOURS ]
Eloy stayed on one knee. His arm hung loose. The Edge was gone. The construct would regenerate, but not in five minutes. Not in an hour.
He was unarmed, facing a Hero-class opponent with only speedrunner instincts and the cold pulse of the glyph under his collarbone.
The sentinel ring on his minimap flickered. One marker. Northwest. Moving.
Eloy looked up at the sky.
Five minutes.
Then Orin would turn around and the duel would enter its second phase. And Eloy would have no Edge, no guard, and no plan that didn’t involve dying before he found one.
