The morning after the breakthrough arrived without alarm.

Lin Xuan opened his eyes to a ceiling that seemed to have one or two more grains of texture than it had the day before, and a body that asked nothing of him for once. The exhaustion of yesterday had not vanished. It had folded itself into something that felt earned. He let himself lie there with the back of one wrist over his forehead and the cup at his ribs sitting full and quiet for the first time in weeks.

Lian came in a few minutes later with the breakfast tray balanced on the flat of one hand and a small linen bundle tucked under the other arm. She crossed the room with the light steps of a woman who had done this routine for years, set the tray on the low table, and pulled the curtains apart with two short tugs. The morning light fell across the bed in a long pale band.

"Good morning, Lin Xuan. Your father asked after you before sunrise. I told him you were sleeping. I hope I judged that correctly."

"You judged it correctly, Lian. He raised me. He knows what a tired son looks like."

She made the small motion at the corner of her mouth that meant she was permitting herself a smile in private. She set the linen bundle beside the tray and uncovered a small ceramic flask painted with a single line of pale green.

"I made you another. The first one I left last night was rough. It will taste of pine again. I have not yet figured out how to take that out of the recipe without losing the recovery property, so you will have to forgive the pine until I do."

"Lian. I have eaten worse on purpose. I have eaten kitchen broth at the sect that smelled like something that died in the well. The pine is fine."

She took the empty bundle, made a small bow with the basket against her hip, and slipped out toward the corridor. The sound of her steps faded down toward the kitchen wing of the residence.

Lin Xuan ate slowly.

[ Good morning, Xuan. How is the new body treating you. ]

Mira’s voice arrived as he was halfway through the rice.

’Like a body that spent eight hours doing something hard and then slept ten. Good.’

[ I have something for you before you decide what to do today. ]

’Surprise me, Mira. I have been awake for ten minutes and you have already opened with a sentence that sounds like the start of work.’

The panel unfolded soft along the back of his vision, gold edged in the way the system reserved for permanent objectives.

He set the chopsticks down on the rim of the bowl with what he thought was a controlled motion. The motion was not as controlled as he had wanted, and the chopsticks made a small clack against the ceramic that betrayed the speed of his pulse.

’Fifteen thousand. And Tier 2 of the shop, permanent.’

[ Close your mouth, host. The breakfast is going to chill from the draft you are creating. ]

’My mouth is closed.’

[ The corner of your lip says otherwise. ]

’Mira, I am going to start keeping a record of how many times a day you accuse me of drooling at the system.’

He drew a slow breath through his nose, looked at the panel one more time, and let his shoulders drop a fraction. The number was large enough to deserve a second look. He gave it a third just to be certain.

’Fine. The number is real. The shop is real. What is the catch.’

[ The catch is the bracket. The catch is Yan Wuji. The catch is that you are entering as a Stage Four when most of the principal field sits at Stage Six and Seven and the invited disciple is one good month away from Foundation Establishment. ]

’I know all of that.’

[ Yes. I am reminding you for the same reason a friend reminds you that the kettle is hot before you reach for it. Because it is. ]

He chewed the last of the rice slowly while turning the word over.

He set the bowl aside and leaned back against the headboard. The new dantian sat full and quiet under his ribs, a small private confidence he had not yet had time to test.

’The Scouting Mode shows me what he is. If the reading is good, I make the offer today.’

[ Today would be ideal. Before he climbs off the platform. The longer that elder watches him, the harder the conversation gets later. ]

’Understood.’

He pushed himself off the bed and reached for the formal robe folded over the back of the chair.

Lian came back through the door as he was tying the inner sash. She set down a small folded cloth on the table without breaking her step.

"Are you going to the Arena, Lin Xuan."

"I am. There is a fight today I want to see for myself."

"Your stepbrother, Lin Kai?"

"Among other things."

She nodded once, the small efficient nod that asked no further questions, and reached up to adjust the seam of the formal collar at the base of his throat. Her fingertips were dry and warm. She tucked the seam exactly where it was meant to sit and stepped back.

"There. Should I come with you."

"Better not today. I will be paying attention to technical things. It would not be conversation. I would feel rude leaving you in a corner."

"Then I will be here when you return. I have notes from yesterday’s session I have not finished going through."

"Take a guard if you go anywhere."

"Lin Xuan."

"Lian."

"I am going to be in the residence."

"And if you are not, take a guard. Humor me."

Her shoulders lifted in the small shrug she gave him when she was choosing the path of least resistance. "I will take a guard."

"Thank you."

She gave him a small bow, picked up the empty tray, and left the room.

The walk to the Arena took less than the time he had budgeted for it.

The streets of Yuncheng were already filling for the second day of the secondary bracket. Mortals and lesser cultivators moving in the same direction, exchanging fragments of conversation that traveled with the crowd toward the eastern gate of the structure.

"...the second of Skyedge against the boy from up north..."

"...they say he hasn’t taken a hit in any round so far..."

"...Stage Four against Stage Seven, that’s going to be quick..."

"...or maybe not..."

He let the fragments wash past him without slowing his pace.

He climbed the western stair of the Arena. The same stair as yesterday. The cushion he had taken yesterday was empty, and so was the one beside it. He glanced once toward the seats Frostmoon Ridge had occupied the day before. Su Qingyue was not there. An older man in a pale blue and white robe sat three cushions to the right of where she had been, hands folded in his sleeves, attention on the fighting floor below.

Lin Xuan took his cushion alone. He let his shoulders ease against the back of the seat and then forward again into the slight angle Su Qingyue had identified yesterday as analysis posture. The motion was unconscious. He caught himself doing it and let it stand.

[ She is not here today, Xuan. ]

’I noticed.’

[ Did the seat feel emptier on its own merit? ]

’Mira.’

He activated the Scouting Mode in the back of his mind. The panel opened quiet, ready, sitting at the edge of his vision like a window waiting to be filled.

The Master of Ceremonies climbed onto the fighting floor below, parchment in hand, and his voice carried up through the rings.

"Secondary Bracket. Young Master Lin Kai of Skyedge Sword Sect, against Disciple Wei Tianming, no sect."

The name reached the upper ring before the second sentence had finished.

Lin Xuan settled an inch deeper into his cushion.

The fight began in five minutes.
