- Chapter 1: My Blood On Stone
She didn’t slow. She ran straight through the mud and slush and launched herself at my horse. I was already swinging down, boots hitting the ground hard enough to jar my teeth.
I caught her mid-air, arms locking around her tiny body, and the force of it drove me back a step. She smelled like milk and woodsmoke and the lavender soap the women used in the baths. Her arms clamped around my neck so tight I could barely breathe, but I didn’t care.
"You came back," she said into my hair, the words muffled and fierce. "You said you would and you did."
"Yes my love, I would never break my promise to you." I replied.
I dropped to my knees right there in the bailey, mud soaking through my cloak, and held her like I could press her into my bones. The kings were off their horses in the next heartbeat.
Darius knelt beside us and wrapped his arms around both of us. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Kane came in from the other side, one scarred hand cupping the back of Lila’s head.
Rylan dropped down last, axe clattering to the stones, and buried his face in the space between my shoulder and hers.
"We missed you all so much, we thought of you every single day while we were gone." I said on behalf of me and my Kings.
The bond snapped tight around the four of us, hot and bright and shaking with relief. I felt every mile of the ride south and back in that single moment. Every drop of Niskanen’s blood. Every night I had lain awake wondering if I would ever hold my daughter again.
Lila pulled back just far enough to look at me. Her eyes were wet but her grin was huge. "Thorne and Elara are bigger now. They crawl everywhere. Even Elara bit my finger yesterday. Very hard."
I laughed, the sound cracking out of me like something rusty finally breaking free. "Hahaha, that is good. They’re learning from their big sister."
The nursery women appeared in the doorway, each carrying one of the twins.
Thorne reached for me first, his chubby arms out, serious little face lighting up when he saw me.
Elara kicked and squealed the second she spotted Rylan, her grin wide and wild. I took Thorne and Elara both at once, one in each arm, while Lila clung to my leg like she refused to let go.
The weight of them hit me hard. Thorne’s dark hair smelled like the same soap. Elara’s tiny fist grabbed my braid and yanked.
I sat right there in the mud with all three of them piled on me. Darius knelt behind me, arms around my shoulders. Kane pressed in on my left, one hand resting on Thorne’s back. Rylan took Elara and held her against his chest like she was made of glass and fire at the same time. The bond wrapped around the seven of us, thick and warm and alive.
Garrick walked down from the wall and stopped a respectful distance away. "The keep held," he said simply. "No trouble from the east. Stores are full. The new laws are sticking. The pack is steady."
I looked up at him over Lila’s head. "Thank you."
He nodded once, eyes flicking to the eight riders and other new faces still waiting by the gate. "New blood?"
"From Shadowpine," I said. "They chose to come. Give them quarters and food. They start fresh tomorrow."
Garrick didn’t ask questions. He just turned and began giving quiet orders. The pack moved around us, some watching from doorways, some stepping closer with careful smiles.
Mira and Soren stayed near the horses, eyes wide at the sight of the children. I saw the moment they realized what they had followed north. Real family. Real safety. Real laws.
I stayed on the ground until my legs went numb from the cold. The twins fussed and then settled, Thorne tucking his face into my neck, Elara grabbing at Rylan’s beard. Lila refused to let go of my leg even when Darius tried to pick her up.
"Mine," she told him, fierce as any wolf.
Eventually the kings got me up. Kane carried Thorne. Rylan carried Elara. Darius carried Lila on his shoulders while she laughed and tugged his hair.
I walked between them, cloak heavy with mud, boots squelching, heart so full it hurt. The bailey felt smaller than I remembered, warmer, louder with the sound of three small voices and the low murmur of the pack watching their queen come home.
We finally made it to the chambers and went inside. The fire was already roaring. Fresh furs covered the bed. Someone had left a tray of bread, cheese, and sliced meat on the table. The nursery women had followed us up and now hovered until I waved them away. I wanted this part for us alone.
I sat on the edge of the bed and the kings brought the children to me. I held all three at once again, arms full, heart fuller. Lila climbed into my lap like she belonged there forever. Thorne rested his head on my shoulder and sighed like the world finally made sense. Elara grabbed my braid with both hands and pulled until I laughed.
Darius knelt in front of me and rested his forehead against mine. "We’re home," he said, voice rough.
Kane sat beside me, one arm around my back, the other hand gently stroking Thorne’s hair. "All of us."
Rylan dropped down on my other side, Elara now chewing on his collar. "No more running south. No more blood on the ground that isn’t ours to spill."
I closed my eyes and let the weight of them sink in. The bond settled around the seven of us like a second heartbeat.
Outside, the keep kept turning, Garrick already assigning quarters to the new wolves, the pack whispering about the queen who had come back with three children and the heads of her enemies left behind in the mud.
Inside these walls it was just us.
Lila fell asleep first, thumb in her mouth, head on my chest. Thorne followed, small snores puffing against my neck. Elara fought it longest, kicking and grinning until her eyes finally slid shut in Rylan’s arms.
I looked at the three of them and then at the three kings who had ridden into hell with me and brought me back.
The road south was over.
The real work of living waited here, in these chambers, in these small hands and steady arms and the quiet strength of a keep that had held while we were gone.
I leaned back against the furs and let the bond hold all of us.
We were home.
And for the first time in years I believed we might actually stay that way.
Morning light hit the chamber windows and woke me with three small bodies piled across my chest.
Lila had claimed the middle spot, one arm flung over Thorne, her thumb still tucked in her mouth. Elara had crawled up during the night and now lay sprawled across my shoulder, tiny fist tangled in my braid. The twins had both cut their first teeth sometime after midnight.
I felt the sharp little edges when Thorne gummed my collarbone in his sleep. My skin stung, but I didn’t move. I just breathed them in; milk, woodsmoke, the faint lavender soap the women used on their clothes and let the ache in my body settle into something almost sweet.
Darius was already awake, propped on one elbow, watching us. His ice-blue eyes caught the light and held. He didn’t speak. He just reached across and brushed a strand of hair from my face, thumb grazing my cheekbone like he was checking I was still real.
Kane lay on his back on the other side, one scarred arm curled around Elara’s legs to keep her from rolling off the bed.
Rylan sprawled at the foot, half on the floor, one hand resting on my ankle like even in sleep he needed the contact.
I shifted carefully. Elara stirred, gums flashing as she fussed. The new teeth had turned her into a tiny tyrant overnight. She latched onto my tunic and tugged, demanding milk with a sharp little cry.
Thorne woke a second later and joined her, both of them rooting against me with wet, insistent noises. Lila cracked one eye open, saw the chaos, and declared, "Teeth hurt," in the same tone she used for everything from cold porridge to broken toys.
I sat up and nursed them while the kings moved around the room like they had rehearsed it.
Darius brought warm water and a cloth.
Kane fetched the soft leather strips we used for teething.
Rylan scooped Lila up, settled her on his hip, and carried her to the window to point out the new foals in the bailey below. Their voices stayed low, the bond moving between us in easy currents... no words needed.
By the time the sun cleared the eastern wall I was dressed and walking the corridors again. The keep felt different now, or maybe I did. The stone under my boots was the same, but the weight on my shoulders had shifted.
