Hector Donovan wasn’t surprised that Grant knew people in the media. To put it bluntly, they all ran in the same circles. After a while, you were bound to build a hodgepodge of connections.
What concerned him more was why this person would be willing to leak such a huge story to Grant ahead of time.
Meeting Hector Donovan’s probing gaze, Grant felt his scalp tingle. He ultimately decided to come clean.
"He was just curious about how you and Jacqueline Jennings became enemies..."
"...So you sold me out?"
"It’s called a mutually beneficial exchange!" Grant insisted, his loud voice a poor attempt to hide his guilt. "And look, we got the latest scoop out of it, didn’t we?"
Hector Donovan crossed his arms, not buying it for a second. "Heh." ’Who’s this "we" you’re talking about!’
At the critical moment, it was Arabella Donovan who spoke up and saved Grant. "Alright, alright. The most important thing right now is to figure out what’s going on. Besides, just because Jacqueline Jennings was arrested doesn’t necessarily mean she’s in real trouble."
"No, no, no..." As soon as Arabella finished speaking, Grant frantically waved his hands. "She might be in deep trouble this time."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because my friend told me that in the photo he took, Jacqueline Jennings’s hands were covered by her clothes." Grant even mimed the action with his own hands.
"Huh?" Arabella Donovan tilted her head in confusion, but Hector Donovan immediately understood the implication.
"She was in handcuffs!"
"Handcuffs?"
"Yes. When the police arrest someone, some people will cover their handcuffs with clothing to preserve their last shred of dignity. Simply put, covering them up looks better and makes them seem less like a criminal."
Arabella understood immediately. "So she’s already considered a criminal."
"Right, right, right. That’s why I said she’s in deep trouble."
If it were just for routine questioning, they would have simply taken her in, not put her in handcuffs.
The use of handcuffs basically meant that she had truly committed a crime, the kind with conclusive evidence.
"It’s only been two days since the first round of questioning. Are the relevant departments really that efficient?"
Grant and Sheldon Webb exchanged a look, then voiced their suspicion. "We suspect she must have offended someone."
It was a given that Jacqueline Jennings’s crimes would be investigated, but for her to be caught so quickly was beyond any of their expectations.
They found it hard to believe there wasn’t someone powerful pulling the strings behind the scenes.
"Who do you think it is?"
"Er..." Sheldon Webb and Grant’s gazes swept over Hector Donovan and Arabella Donovan, but they hesitated to speak.
Arabella Donovan raised an eyebrow and asked tentatively, "You suspect... Mr. Rhodes?"
The mere mention of that name gave Hector Donovan a touch of PTSD. His brows knitted tightly as he shot back, "How could it possibly be him?"
"Why couldn’t it be him? He defended us that night." Although Grant directed his words at Hector Donovan, his eyes were on Arabella Donovan.
At first, he too had thought Caspian Rhodes’s target was Hector Donovan. But later, he gradually realized that the person Caspian seemed to care more about was Hector’s sister.
Especially after Arabella made her move, Caspian Rhodes’s handling of the situation had favoritism written all over it.
That was precisely why he dared to guess that Caspian Rhodes was involved. After all, that madwoman hadn’t just wanted to ruin Hector Donovan’s reputation; she had wanted to destroy Arabella Donovan as well.
Hector Donovan grew annoyed just hearing Caspian Rhodes’s name. His expression darkened at Grant’s words, and he was about to retort when a series of urgent knocks on the door interrupted him.
"Grant, Grant, are you in there? Come out, quick! Something happened!"
Grant recognized his assistant director’s voice and hurried to open the door. "How did you know I was here? What happened?"
"The actor in the room next to you told me. Never mind that. It’s Young—Ken Young from our cast—he’s been hospitalized."
"???"
Grant froze for a moment. Then, as if remembering something, he stiffly turned his head to glance at Arabella Donovan before asking for confirmation again. "Who did you say was hospitalized?"
"The one who plays the Sect Leader of the Azure Cloud Sect, Ken Young."
Finally certain he hadn’t misheard, Grant sucked in a sharp breath.
Hector Donovan and the others were also taken aback, especially Arabella Donovan.
’That’s not right. According to the original plot, after his wife and brother-in-law absconded with the money, Young was just supposed to get overly emotional, fall down, and get a few scrapes. How did he end up in the hospital? How serious could his injuries be?’
Hearing the panic and guilt in Arabella Donovan’s thoughts, Hector Donovan and the others quickly understood that she was probably worried this situation was her fault because of her earlier "prophecy."
His eyes flickered, and Hector Donovan stepped forward first to ask, "Young is in the hospital? What happened? Is it serious?"
"It’s not too serious. They said he hit his head during an argument and has a mild concussion. He needs to be hospitalized for a few days for observation, just to be safe."
Hearing it wasn’t serious, Grant and the Donovan family breathed a sigh of relief.
"It’s strange, though," the assistant director mused. "Young is famous for being good-tempered. For him to get into a heated argument, let alone a physical fight, it must’ve been over something huge."
The speaker may have been oblivious, but his words struck a chord with the listeners.
The assistant director happened to be away on business the day Arabella Donovan joined Hector Donovan on set. Grant and Sheldon Webb, however, knew exactly what Arabella had said to Ken Young back then, and the looks they gave her now grew even more complicated.
"Which hospital is Young in? We don’t have anything else to do, so let’s go visit him."
The one who spoke was Hector Donovan. Although the incident with the police had been cleared up, he had already lost several gigs because of it, so he had a few days to rest.
In order to get a better handle on the situation, the Donovan family had decided to stay in Jarden for a few more days, which was why they were still at the hotel the production crew had arranged for them.
Now was the perfect time to go visit Ken Young together and find out what had happened.
Arabella Donovan’s eyes lit up. She was also very curious about Ken Young’s condition.
Hearing this, Grant and the others quickly chimed in that they would go along too. After all, Ken Young was part of their cast; since he was hospitalized, it was only right and proper that they visit him. It certainly wasn’t because they were curious gossips!
With so many people going, Mr. and Mrs. Donovan couldn’t be left out, of course.
Lately, all the drama they’d been consuming was their own family’s. Gossiping about someone else’s for a change might be even more satisfying—after all, watching someone else’s drama unfold comes with zero pressure!
The group bought some fruit on the way and headed to the hospital in a large procession. After asking for Ken Young’s room number at the information desk, they hurried upstairs without delay.
They never expected to hear a noisy argument coming from inside before they even reached the door.
"Daisy is your wife, and Jizu is your brother-in-law! We’re all family, do you have to make things this ugly? My husband and I are laying it on the line right now: if you dare to not drop the case, we old folks will smash our heads against this wall and die right here! Let’s see what everyone will have to say about you then!"
The group outside: Oh boy, they had arrived just in time to witness the drama unfold live!
