The silence in the corridor had weight.
Neil stood perfectly still, Celine two steps away, her cold violet eyes cutting through him like an audit. The jade token in her hand pulsed faintly.
"Don’t play dumb with me, Neil Harlan." Her voice dropped, precise and quiet. She stepped closer, boots clicking against the marble like a countdown. "A shattered Dantian. A scholarship janitor on the midnight shift. And yet — you were the only one present near the forbidden library when the Vespera clan’s shadow-guard was neutralized last night."
His pulse jumped once. His face didn’t move.

Target: Celine
State: Confident, Calculating
Threat Level: High — Tier 3 Cultivator
Note: Fragmented Qi flow in right meridian. Over-cultivation strain.
She doesn’t have proof, Neil calculated behind the mask. She’s fishing. If she knew about the Core, the enforcement squad would already be here.
"L-Lady Celine—" He clutched the broom, letting his voice shake. A bead of sweat rolled down his temple on cue. "I don’t know anything about a shadow-guard. I was only cleaning residual Qi dust from the floor. Please — I can’t be sent to the mining camps. My younger sister depends on what little I send home."
Celine’s lips curved. Watching him grovel only confirmed what she already believed.
She reached out, gloved fingers catching the edge of his glasses and tilting his face up.
"Save it for someone who cares," she said flatly, dropping a dark leather ledger at his feet. "I don’t care whether you’re innocent.
What I care about is leverage. Lilith Vespera has been watching you — tracking your movement, following your shifts. The Vespera heir doesn’t waste her attention on a useless janitor without a reason."
Neil stared at the ledger, eyes wide. "Lady Lilith? She only orders me around because I clean her courtyard. She terrifies me."
"Then you’ll find a way to survive the terror."
Celine’s voice cut clean. "From today, you’re my shadow pawn. Every courtyard Lilith visits, every cultivation manual she reads, every person she speaks to — you record it in that ledger and deliver it to the Disciplinary Hall every three days."
"And if I fail?"
She leaned in, breath cold against his ear. "If you fail — or if you think about betraying me — I’ll personally sign the execution order for your family for harboring a spy. A commoner’s life is cheaper than dirt here.
Remember that."
Neil nodded rapidly, the perfect picture of a cornered animal. "I’ll do it. Whatever you say, Lady Celine. Just — please leave my family out of this."
"A compliant dog lives longer." She stepped back, tossed a small bronze pass toward him. It landed beside the ledger.
"Unrestricted janitorial access to the Inner Court. It’ll give you entry to the elite cultivation halls under the cover of cleaning. Use it carefully."
She turned and walked away, posture radiating absolute victory.
Neil stayed on his knees for three full minutes. Head down, body trembling, waiting until the last trace of her Qi signature faded from the hallway.
Then the trembling stopped.
He stood slowly, brushed the dust from his trousers, and straightened his glasses with two fingers. The frightened janitor dissolved like smoke.
He picked up the bronze pass, feeling the dense energy trapped in the metal.
Unrestricted access to the Inner Court’s residual Qi halls, he thought. Celine believes she just chained me with blackmail. What she actually did was hand me the fastest route to rebuilding my foundation. With this pass, I can absorb leaked Qi from the academy’s top cultivators without raising a single flag.
His vision blinked.

Anomaly Detected: Microscopic tracking array — lower hem of host’s uniform.
Source: Lilith Vespera — unique crimson Qi signature.
Status: Active. Approximately 40% of audio from the previous exchange was recorded before entering the dampening zone.
Neil’s smile held for exactly one second before going very still.
Lilith had been listening. She’d planted the array without him noticing.
Forty percent. He ran the timeline. If she caught the beginning, she knows Celine is running a surveillance operation against her. A normal yandere would go straight for blood. But Lilith won’t see this as a threat — she’ll see Celine as a predator trying to steal her property.
He looked toward the dark spires of the inner court. The entrance loomed like the jaw of something that had swallowed better people whole. From the outside, this place was advertised as the prestigious Dual Cultivation Academy — a sanctuary of mutual growth and elite cultivation.
But standing here with a blackmailer’s bronze pass in one hand and a listening device on the hem of his uniform, Neil understood what this place actually was.
Akuto Academy. The Den of Villains.
And he was currently caught between a ruthless political operator who controlled his family’s fate, and a psychotic heir who had been quietly recording his conversations from the dark.
"Two predators," he murmured, the sharp edge of a real smile returning to his face. "One mouse."
He slipped the bronze pass into his pocket.
Let’s see who ends up on whose leash
