It really is true — poor couples face all kinds of troubles. Sitting idle, Evan felt sad for others and for himself. Thinking back to when he was broke and desperate, everything went wrong. He was stubborn, full of self-pity, and didn’t want to talk to anyone. Even he looked down on his old self.
When you’re poor, your spirit shrinks. You really can’t do anything well.
The poorer you are, the more things go wrong. The worse things get, the worse your mindset becomes. With a bad mindset, everything you do annoys people. It becomes a vicious cycle, and you sink deeper.
But when things are going well, everything flows smoothly. A good mindset makes your words and actions attractive to others.
It turns into a positive cycle. Life gets better, the family becomes happier, and success comes easier.
Sometimes, you can’t really blame poor people for lacking ambition or not trying hard enough.
When you’re poor, just eating is a problem. How can you think big? Every day is a struggle. Where is the energy for good manners or social skills?
"Evan, come here for a second." While Evan was thinking, Sophia suddenly pulled him aside with a serious face.
After living with his wife for over a year, Evan knew exactly what Sophia wanted to ask.
"Evan, is this money really from your writing?" Sophia looked at him seriously, suspicion clear in her eyes.
"Of course it’s from my royalties. Where else would I get it? I wish I had that kind of luck to win big," Evan joked and gently pinched Sophia’s soft cheek.
He understood his wife’s doubt and actually felt warmed by her concern.
"You better not lie to me. It’s okay if we’re poor. My salary is enough for both of us. You can’t do anything illegal or shady just to make money!" Sophia said earnestly.
"Don’t worry. Am I that kind of person? Besides, I stay home writing every day. No shady opportunities would find me anyway," Evan said softly as he hugged her.
"That’s good. Don’t waste the money either. We still haven’t bought a house. About buying Mom a Mercedes — just talk about it, don’t actually do it. Cars are just expenses. I think our Toyota is fine. Buying a Mercedes is only for showing off. It’s pointless," Sophia advised patiently.
"Okay, okay. I know. Let’s buy the house first, then the car," Evan replied with a smile.
At that moment, a phone rang. Sophia took out her phone and muttered, "That naughty girl probably wants money again."
She answered and said directly, "Mia, when are you coming home? It’s already past 8! You’re a young girl — it’s not safe to be out so late!"
"Sis... I... I drank a little... feeling dizzy... Can you... come pick me up..."
Evan listened closely. Mia’s voice sounded slurred. She had clearly drunk too much.
The background was noisy, with a guy and several girls constantly urging her to drink more.
Evan frowned immediately.
"Mia! How could you drink?! What are you doing?! You’ve gone too far today!" Sophia scolded angrily.
"Sis... I want to go home... Come get me... Hurry..."
"Mia, where are you?" Evan took the phone from Sophia and asked gently.
"Brother-in-law... I’m... I’m at... at the Grand Court Hotel, Room 108 restaurant... Hey! I’m not drinking anymore!! Go away!!..." Mia answered in a daze. A guy’s voice and several girls kept pushing her to drink. It was very loud.
Evan could only make out that she was at the Grand Court Hotel restaurant 108.
"Okay, I’ll come right now. Stop drinking and don’t go anywhere. Wait for me!"
Before Evan could finish, the call was hung up.
Evan frowned in anger. He handed the phone back to Sophia and said, "It sounds like someone is forcing Mia to drink. I’ll go pick her up right now!"
"Brother-in-law, what’s wrong? Did that silly girl cause trouble again?" Emma asked curiously as she walked over.
"Mia is drunk. I’m going to get her now." Evan didn’t explain much. He rushed to the garage, started the car, and sped off toward the Grand Court Hotel.
Evan had been through school life in high school and college. He knew how things worked.
Mia was beautiful, a top student, and most importantly, very innocent.
At a student gathering like this, there were definitely guys who liked her but couldn’t have her, so they tried dirty tricks.
Even her female friends and classmates probably didn’t have good intentions.
The most dangerous is often the people closest to you. Some jealous girls might be secretly messing with Mia because she was prettier and smarter than them.
The more Evan thought about the things he had seen in high school, the more anxious he became. He pressed the gas pedal hard, and the car roared toward the hotel.
