- Chapter 1: Leo Kaito
The drive to Anya’s estate was quiet. The English countryside was turning green with the arrival of spring, the rolling hills dotted with sheep. Leo lived with Anya in a sprawling, manor-style house that had been in her family for generations.
Since his parents died in a car accident when he was a child, Anya, his father’s closest friend and commanding officer in the military, had taken him in. She was the only mother he knew, and the estate was the only home he remembered.
It was a big, lonely house. Anya had never married, her life consumed by the military and then by the high-stakes world of motorsport. Aside from a few house helps who kept the place running, it was just the two of them.
He pulled the SUV into the gravel driveway and backed it up to the side entrance. With the help of the estate’s groundskeeper, a sturdy man named Thomas who didn’t ask questions, they moved the pod onto a heavy-duty dolly.
"Heavy bit of kit, this," Thomas grunted, his face turning red as they pushed the pod toward the service lift. "What is it? A fancy tanning bed?"
"Something like that," Leo replied with a chuckle, his grip tight on the carbon fiber frame.
They reached the second floor and rolled the pod into Leo’s bedroom. It was a large, airy room with high ceilings and a view of the back gardens, but the presence of the pod immediately changed the atmosphere.
The matte-black surface seemed to swallow the natural light, a dark, silent monolith sitting at the foot of his bed.
Once Thomas left, Leo closed and locked his door. He stood in the center of the room, looking at the pod. It looked even more menacing here than it had in the gritty Arcadia garage. In the garage, it was just another tool. Here, in his private space, it looked like an invader.. A Predator.
He plugged the power cables into the dedicated circuit he had prepared. The machine hummed to life, a series of small, green status lights flickering across the side panel.

"I’m home," Leo whispered, the irony of the statement not lost on him.
He sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the pod. He had seventeen days. He could spend time with Anya, he could eat real food, he could sleep in a real bed. But he knew that the moment he closed his eyes, he would be back in Monaco or probably a different grid.
He would be back in the rain, feeling the x500 pain of a barrier impact. The simulation wasn’t just in the pod anymore; it was in his mind.
He checked his phone. There were dozens of messages from the team, journalists, and even a few from old classmates he hadn’t spoken to in years. He ignored them all. He needed to rest, but the adrenaline from the test was still buzzing in his veins.
A knock at the door made him jump.
"Leo? It’s me." Anya’s voice was soft.
He opened the door. She was standing there with two plates of sandwiches and a bottle of water. She looked past him at the pod, her expression unreadable.
"It looks even uglier in here," she remarked, walking in and setting the food on his desk.
"It works," Leo said simply.
Anya sat on the edge of his armchair, watching him with a doting smile. "The news is everywhere, Leo. ’The Ghost of Silverstone.’ They’re calling you a once-in-a-generation talent. But I saw your face after the race. You weren’t happy. You looked rather... haunted."
Leo sat at his desk and picked up a sandwich, though he wasn’t hungry. "It’s just a lot to take in, Anya. The pressure of the team, the license... it’s a lot."
"Ya know what? I think it’s more than that," Anya said, her voice firm. "I’ve known you since you were a boy. You’ve always been quiet and reserved, but now... it’s like there’s a wall around you. If you’re in trouble, Leo, if this ’training protocol’ is doing something to you, you have to tell me."
Leo looked at her. He saw the genuine fear in her eyes, the love of a mother who was watching her son turn into something she didn’t recognize. He wanted to tell her. He wanted to scream that he was trapped in a million-lap nightmare.
But the memory of the "Neural Pain Feedback" hit him like a physical blow. If she tried to help, if she interfered with the system, Simex would punish him. Or worse, it would shut down and take his mind with it.
"I’m fine, Anya," he said, his voice as cold and steady as he could make it. "The training is just intense.. that’s it. It changes the way you think and see things. It makes you faster, but it requires a certain... detachment. It’s what I need to win."
Anya stared at him for a long time, her jaw tight. She didn’t like the answer because she knew he was straight up lying to her face. How could she not spot his meager effort to lie, she was his mother after all.
She didn’t like the person he was becoming. But she had seen him drive so good, it made her speechless and excited to see him excel in motorsports. She had seen the miracle on the track.
"Just don’t lose yourself in there," she said, nodding toward the pod. "The grid is a dangerous place, Leo. But that box... I have a feeling it’s more dangerous."
She turned and left the room, closing the door softly behind her.
Leo sat in the silence, the sandwich tasting like ash in his mouth. He looked at the pod. He had seventeen days of freedom, but he knew he wouldn’t use them all.
The system wouldn’t let him. It would tempt him with skills, quests, upgrades, and promise of more speed. It would whisper that seventeen days was a waste of time when he could be finishing Phase 2.
But that was a better idea, wasn’t it? Stacking up Freedom Units by completing 100 laps every week, instead of leaving it all to the last second. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
He stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the gardens. The sun was setting, casting long, golden shadows across the grass. It truly was beautiful.
But as he watched a bird fly across the sky, he didn’t just see a bird like every normal human being does. He saw a trajectory alongside it. He also saw the wind resistance and the "Slipstream Prediction" lines trailing behind its wings.
He was getting farther and farther away from being just a human.
Leo turned away from the window and walked toward the pod.
"Just a few laps," he whispered to the empty room. "To keep the edge."
He climbed into the carbon fiber seat. The harness clicked shut, the haptic gloves sealed over his hands, and the canopy descended, plunging him into the familiar, digital darkness.

Leo flexed his fingers around the wheel. The real world was gone. The estate, Anya, the sandwiches, they were all memories now. There was only the track and machine.
The engine roared to life in his ears, a simulated, perfect sound.
"Let’s go," Leo said.
