Grib returned with two iron hooks and a kettle whose brown resin glittered against the stir.
Burned honey and wet metal filled Dane’s sealed room. Kett followed with his black-wax tablet, stopped beside the bar lever, and counted the correction branches.
"Compliance upgrade. Reclamation review. Controlled confirmation if the first two fail to settle the record."
Three dull coppers remained free beneath Dane’s tongue. Vera’s chalk-threaded fringe stayed folded against the cracked root. The named kill order pressed at his split hinge, waiting for the next authorized return.
Grib set down the kettle and hooks without using either.
One hook ended in a flat reclamation spoon; three barbs sized for Dane’s hinge pins armed the other. Resin rolled in the kettle against the direction of Grib’s stir, its gold flecks gathering toward every crack in Dane’s lid.
Kett laid his tablet beside the kettle. "The offer can project fit. Projection changes no material and grants no trial control."
Grib dipped the flat hook into the resin, then held it above Dane without touching him. Gold threads descended through the air and traced the offered F-1 body above his lid.
The tablet warmed.
The proposed body entered Dane through every damaged place.
Resin slid along his split hinge and replaced the grinding gap with a sealed joint that snapped fast. New grain thickened beneath the ownership nails. The lid gained enough force to knock Brant’s shield out of line instead of breaking itself against iron. Armor hardened over the mouth floor where hooks and copper edges kept opening the same abrasion.
The projected hinge closed once. Dane felt the difference all the way through his base: no metal scrape, no delayed left corner, no command pressure wasting force by twisting the lid. A clean close would let him shut before hunger finished a bite. A clean opening would let him throw his own timing against the Core instead of spending every thought on damaged alignment.
His crooked tooth seated straight in a stronger root.
Repair resin cupped the root without numbing it. The tooth remained something he could feel and therefore something he might still control. Across the front band, layered armor turned Grib’s barbed hook aside and spread the impact through wood thick enough to keep its shape.
Lure scent became something he could thin before Tess saw false value or Holt mistook need for mercy. Better modulation might let him ruin Vera’s contact route before the Core used it again. For one bright bodily instant, F-1 meant surviving Grib’s hooks, Brant’s shield, and the next command with parts worth resisting through.
Then the trigger drove four names through the improvements.
The fast hinge opened on Vera Pike; lid force broke Brant Cole’s guard; refined shine drew Tess Crowe across the chalk; resin armor kept Dane intact while Brother Holt became the last meal.
The body he wanted arrived already practicing their deaths.
Saint Rust scraped inside the retained knife vessel. "A polished leash still closes at the throat."
Kett set the stylus beside the kettle. "Reclamation begins with the barbed hook. Staff open the hinge channels, drain conversion medium, and lower the shell into a boil rack. Awakened variance goes into the waste skim. Usable shell, hinges, lockplate, rooted teeth, and brass return to stock."
Dane pictured awareness rising as scum while the cracked tooth survived him, catalogued and hammered into another mouth. The body could outlast the person because Brackenvault valued the cheaper half. Reuse served as punishment, inventory recovery, and proof that resistance never owned its materials.
The projected F-1 shell waited above the boil hook. Upgrade and annihilation shared the same kettle.
Grib lifted a clean copper disk with tongs. The open-mouth seal faced Dane; a square of wet black wax covered the reverse.
"Tongue contact begins routing," Kett said. "Swallowing records acceptance under monster-asset procedure."
"Does involuntary opening alter the record?" Grib asked.
"The procedure records intake. It lacks an intent field."
That answer ended the room’s comedy before the token moved.
No option in the room allowed Dane to leave as he was. Upgrade demanded murder. Refusal authorized annihilation. Silence belonged to the body Brackenvault could move.
Grib brought the disk to the front rim.
Dane counted his three free coppers: one behind the cracked tooth, one in the rear gutter, one braced against the ward fringe.
The clean token touched wood.
His mouth opened without permission.
The split hinge rose unevenly, old damage dragging the left corner while the kill order forced the right. Resin flecks in the kettle swam faster. The acceptance disk pulled at his tongue through the wet wax, promising the projected hinge, seated tooth, and armored grain as soon as the intake recognized it.

The named order loosened the lid, raised the tongue, and pulled the wet wax toward the intake. Dane drove his 0.08 percent into the crooked left front tooth. Its cracked root shifted, but the point caught the token’s edge and tipped the disk sideways.
Clean copper slid into the front groove.
The tooth pinned it there.
His tongue surged to correct the failed swallow. The movement struck the copper behind the tooth, knocked it across the raw mouth floor, and freed the dirty coin from the rear gutter.
Dane tried to stop the rear coin with the side of his tongue. The command had already shaped the tongue into a ramp for clean acceptance. Its own curve sent the dirty copper over the abrasion, under the pinned token, and toward the deeper pull.
The intake opened below them.
Wet wax pulled for the clean disk, but the tooth held that disk above the drop. The dirty copper reached the intake first.
Before Brackenvault could distinguish token from obstruction, the intake swallowed a cargo of dungeon grime, old biological trace, conversion pressure, and the handling marks of every refusal Dane had forced through those coins.
Heat ripped from the lower channel into his cracked root. Hunger cinched around the inaccessible coin and demanded repayment in living flesh. Dane tried to lift his tongue; the command held it flat, leaving the clean token pinned close enough to want and too crooked to claim.
The projected F-1 hinge snapped shut inside his body-map. For one instant the offer tried to treat the swallowed copper as partial acceptance. Grime clouded the wet-wax signature. Old conversion residue entered the routing line. The clean projection lost its right corner, then its armor, then the straight tooth Dane had already begun to miss.

Two dull coppers remained free. One held Vera’s fringe at the root. The other rolled into the space the swallowed coin had left.
The ingested copper burned below Dane’s reach. It fed nothing, repaired nothing, and made his hunger more expensive. The named kill order stayed active.
Every hunger pulse tried to pull one of the two free coppers after it. Dane spread his tongue across the intake lip, anchoring one coin at Vera’s fringe and trapping the other behind the front groove. The position hurt the existing abrasion but kept the count stable.
Grib kept the tongs at the rim until Kett caught his wrist.
"Routing has closed," Kett said. "A second push would alter the trace."
Grib withdrew the tongs. Humor had left his face with the first involuntary opening.
He looked from the sideways token to the unused kettle. Applying resin now would mix an unclaimed offer with a contaminated route and put the failure under his staff seal. Fear of the Core outweighed Dane’s wishes and kept Grib’s tools unused.
The clean acceptance token remained sideways in the front groove, wet wax pressed away from Dane’s tongue and the cracked tooth trembling over its edge.
Kett marked the tablet. "Offer pending. Interference suspected. Controlled feeding simulation is required. Stable compliance may restore upgrade routing. Repeated interference preserves reclamation authority."
"We practice, then," Grib said. "The resin and hooks wait for a result."
He carried both tools out unused. Kett followed with the tablet flat, preserving the broken route exactly as it had occurred.
Bars sealed the room.
Dane held the result inside one mouth: two free coppers, one dirty coin burning in the intake, Vera’s fringe at the cracked root, and the clean acceptance token pinned in the front groove. His Control remained 0.08 percent while the kill order stayed active and the promised body waited in the kettle.
Wax pressure began drawing a practice room across his thoughts.
