Leonardo, instinctively looking back, met the red pupils tracing a parabola. The creature, regenerating the flesh it had cast off like a lizard cutting its tail, chuckled as if it found his expression amusing.

Leonardo clenched his fist and immediately changed direction. He leaped toward the creature, steam venting from under his feet.
